I lived in Germany for 9 years. I didn't like it initially - as a Brit I am used to more relaxed connections to new people, but I learned fluent German - and still speak it - which made a huge difference Love Germany, I actually lived in Munich, great city. I have retired now and live in Thailand - I think half of Germany is here with me! I would agree with the comments, it's not so easy in the beginning to make friends, but once you break the ice it does become much easier. And speaking German is definitely a big plus. Really enjoyed the program!

I also think it`s great that we`ve become so international. And in my opinion , you don`t need to be shy about addressing German circles of friends, you quickly make contact there and accepted.☺💙

< The United States has many problems, but most of them lack clear solutions, so they remain unsolved problems. However, one major problem that has a clear solution, in my opinion, is the US tax code. Please note that this is not a general complaint against US taxes, on the contrary, I personally believe that as a US citizen we get a lot of benefit from the taxes we pay and the IRS does a pretty good job of keeping everything in order, but it's a rail against overly complex, convoluted and incredibly inconsistent laws about how taxes are calculated that are so riddled with loopholes and free passes that they have become a pervasive injustice to ordinary Americans.
@Maria-bd4du
@Maria-bd4du Жыл бұрын
< The solution: Throw away the tax code and come away with a much more simplified (but not necessarily different) tax system, mostly by removing most of the exemptions and exceptions that benefit very, very few. (In fact, although I'm no expert, I would estimate that 99% of the existing tax code does not benefit the 95% of taxpaying US citizens.)>>

I think Munich is a good choice for that video, because there is a big difference between Munich as a big city, and the typical Bavarian from the countryside, that you are probably thinking of. I know both very well, I grew up on the countryside and think that Munich can represent the German average pretty well. By the way, munich is ruled by SPD for decades (still sadly not by the green party 😅)

13:06 I can't agree with that. Why change everything for foreigners? After all, they are coming to your country. If a German goes to the U.S., can he argue that they are not open-minded because their street signs are not in German? No, of course not... Germany is a very open country and tolerates a lot of cultures and people from other countries. To say that Germans have to adapt their rules and culture for foreigners is very disrespectful. Sadly, many young Germans have this mentality because they are not taught that being German is not a bad thing. These people mostly give up being German to please others. That is why German patriotism is so weak.

Exactly! I feel like we are so accommodating to foreigners, even at our own expense. You'd be hard pressed to find a country with better social benefits and living conditions for foreigners, and she expects us to do away with our language as well? A language is part of a country's identity; the very nature and composition of a language determines how a person thinks! Perhaps Germany's culture and success in modern times can even be partially attributed to the mindset the language instills upon it's inhabitants. The language of thinkers and poets should be forgotten simply because social media has taken the world by storm and instated English as the world language? I think not. English should remain the world language for all I care, but not at the expense of a country's local language. 👍

I guess Germany is still losing competition for talented skilled immigrants. Language and bureaucracy make it less attractive compared to UK, Canada, USA, Australia. To get a working visa in Germany u have to pass a language test, I would say why not let a skilled worker to pass the language test for example in a year or two to extend the visa. Worker already passed the interview, The company paid a lot of money to the government to be certified to issue a working visa. It's easier to learn a language when u are living in a country already. English is more than enough at least for the start.

Hey you true Brit, I truly love your interviews, because my ex wife hates it here in Cologne (her only reason to stay is our boy). So the good impact on me is, that overall the views on Germans are very balanced in Pros and Cons and all those shades in between and .... all these beautiful people appear basically happy, which is very touching to me as a German. And allo of this iswill be so much more positively teaching my son on our and whatever culture - than the prejedice of his mother. So why dont you come to Cologne at do your thing here? I would assume you get quite s different response in Cologne compared to Munich, and you will also meet quite an international crowd. I will be happy to show you around a little bit. Cheers, Martin

Wait a moment, if someone doesn’t like it in Germany you call it prejudice? I‘m in a similar situation, or opposite if you want to. Believe me, if I had prejudice it was only postive (Germans know how to sell themselves well) but my experience changed everything. For me the worst cons: the health system, jugendamt, public transport (really pricy and the trains aren‘t reliable at all), food quality is not really top notch and for me the weather. Really cold winters for my taste. It is not a major problem but it‘s more corrupt than I thought. The positives is that you do get decent wages, although ordinary jobs are badly paid considering the cost of life. I like the cycling tracks and the way drivers respect cyclists. Going to work by bike is not that uncommon and it’s the part of Germany I like. Another pro for me is that they do at least try more than other countries to keep the planet as clean as possible. The Pfand system is cool and makes everyone recycle plastic. Overall I wasn’t really happy there in Frankfurt.

As a German I think we have a very good mixture. It is not all about "freedom" like in the USA. We have also a social system. It is not a super public transportation like in Switzerland, but it is good. It is not the best education like in Finland or South Korea, but a very good one, that is for free. We have a good mixture in democracy, not nearly perfect linke in Scandinavia, but also nut the choice between two parties. We are not a typical immigration country, but we have lots of people from abroad since the 50th, 60th, etc. and we don't want to miss, the Dönerladen, Pizzeria, Greek, Indian, Vietnamese or Sushi-Restaurants. And while we stick to the German language, that is actually very easy to understand when spoken (probably not easy to learn for everybody), today alle people younger than 40 years also speak at least a bit of English. Sometime foreigner complain about Germans, that quickly change to English to help in the conversation, but the foreigners couldn't improve there German skills. Of course, Germans are very honest, sometimes brutally honest. "Dear, does this new dress looks nice?" "No, it does not!" Only ask, if you want to have the Germans opinion. And Germans always like to complain, what keeps us making things better, but very often looks like, that nothing is good. German: "The train is always late! Look at Switzerland!" American: "Oh, wow, you have a so good public transport all over the country, with train stations, everywhere!"

'Baked' Beans like the ones we eat today are an English colonial invention that instead of eating beans baked as per the style of native Americans, which really were baked, they are steam cooked in sauce, and it is quite 'modern' to have them as part of a full English breakfast. The USA started commercialised canned 'baked beans' and exported them as a delicacy to the English victuallers, Fortnum & Mason in 1886. By 1901 they were exported to the UK in high volume and were cheap. The recipe in the UK was tweaked to be less sweet and was adopted into being eaten with breakfast. In WW2 the little sausages were removed during rationing. I loathe them. Yuck. No one is ruining my delicious traditional English breakfast with them!!!!

As long as you give some respect to the already built and the values, it will all be fine with Germans. This condition is also valid for other countries. 😊
