He isnt a professional, the main problem isnt the solder balls itz the thermal paste under the heatspreader ON the cpu and rsx, it isnt the reball first they NEED to try if the thermalpaste is hard under the IHS of the chips, if it is he just put a new one on the die and also ontop as usual, No fuckin reball needed, but f this dosent work then reball but if he is reballing the chip without taking a look under the IHS then if it is broken he can reball 5 times in a row and the ps3 will still kick its bucket, and thats professional not thoes reball dudes here but they seem not to get what the REAL problem is, its the Thermal Compound under the IHS peace!

@@C7TJFVB7CAZ_TyonorShap You’re wrong as well brother, the real problem is (90% of the times) the RSX knocking on deaths door, Nvidia ordered a lot of those faulty chips from TSMC, the CECH-20xx models also shipped with the ever unreliable 65nm version of the RSX, the only reliable versions of that chip is the 40nm and 28nm, in conclusion, applying new thermal paste will mitigate the thermal throttling, but it’s definitely not a solution, and reballing is useless most of the time

Zwyczajnie ;) Kwestia doświadczenia i sprawnego oka.

Można by się pokusić o zalanie w nowej płycie szczeliny pomiędzy płytą a obudową BGA w celu uszczelnienia i zapobieżenia utlenianiu.

Don't bother. It's not the reballing but the reheating of the CPU that fixes it. Just heat it at 125 degr for 10 miniutes will have the same effect. It's not the connection to the board but the waver to the pins that's the problem.

@@sticky170 ROHS complient solder requires higher and higher temps to reflow each time you do that. It should be replaced with leaded solder in accordance with US Air Force Policies to insure substainment.
@sticky170
@sticky170 5 жыл бұрын
@@tillmanadkins713 you're missing my point. It is not the reflow oud the cpu contracts to the motherboard that fixes the problem. It's a cheap cpu and reheating the cpu temporarily fixes the internals. But ends up breaking again as it is a shitty quality to begin with.
@Djbiohazard1991
@Djbiohazard1991 5 жыл бұрын
@@sticky170 Usually, there isn't any problem with the IC itself. The 7th gen game consoles all relied heavily on ROHS solder. Guess what? All of the consoles in that generation have issues, despite having different BGA IC's. It's usually a cold joint under the chip, which heating sometimes does "fix", but only for a little while. It's still the old solder that caused the issue. Reflowing in this case is a temporary fix, and reballing (what's shown in the video, and suggested by Tillman Adkins) is to replace the leadless solder, and replace it with leaded solder. This will break ROHS compliance, but it will give better than new results.

Just a heads up for anyone watching this video in 2018, Reballing does not fix this issue. It's a temporary band aid for a much bigger issue. The real issue is inside the chip itself. The chip gets permanently damaged due to excessive heat, caused by poor cooling. There is no fix for this. The only thing you can do is replace the thermal paste under the heatspreaders and hope that no permanent damage has been done to the chip.

very interesting but I have to wonder wouldn't desoldering and re-flowing cause damage to the CPU/RSX? The temps required to melt the solder are far beyond the temperature the package was developed to withstand. Than again they had to do this same thing to get it on so I find it odd. Maybe the side effect's are minor enough but I know the CPU/RSX will shut down at around 85c protect itself from damage due to overheating and solder melts at near 200c.

@jedrula77
@jedrula77 5 жыл бұрын
Konieczny wręcz niezbędny warunek to idealne oczyszcenie przestrzeni pomiędzy PCB a obudową chipu. Inaczej reflow możne nic nie dać a narobić bałaganu. Taki chip ma określoną ilość takich cykli a samo czyszczenie ze starych kulek też go nagrzewa. Później wstawienie nowych i znów cykl tym razem mocniejszy. I później wlut.

Nice video ... but only used BGAs need reballing. Why would you unsolder, reball it and resolder the same part? :)

1. Jakim roztworem pokryto stare spoiwo ? 2.

1. Powinien to być średnioaktywny topnik np.Amtech. 2. Grot szpatułkowy - w szpatułce jest grzałka. To rozwiązanie oparte na niewymienności końcówek gwarantuje lepszą kondensację ciepła, niż w sytuacji wymiennych grotów, gdzie pojemność cieplna i straty migrującego ciepła są większe. 3. Plecionka miedziana. 4. Powinno się rozważać jaki powinien być użyty.

@@MegaThethinker Ok dziękuję za odpowiedź. Właśnie przymierzam się do wykonania reballingu samodzielnie. Koszt wykonania reballiingu przez doświadczony serwis przekracza kilkukrotnie wartość konsoli, zatem trzeba działać samodzielnie.

***** The 360 probably doesn't need a reball. Usually it just needs thermal paste which is super easy.

I have never heard of this problem on the PS3, but either way, there HAS to be a better way to do this repair. I will admit, this guy is good. However, all he had to do was add some liquid flux under the BGA (Not Flux Paste) and hit it with some heat to reflow the part. THAT is all. We do this for a living, on a much larger scale. The only time you remove a BGA is when there is a short. Opens can be reflowed. And as long as you add flux and clean properly after, you can reflow 2-3 times without damage. Put the thing on a hot plate so you won't have to focus so much heat at the top. And there is no guarantee that his way would work since you can't x-ray it to see if you are on correctly or if there are shorts or opens. It is just a bunch of unnecessary work. ha

@ExpressITpI Hi! I am writing to you after watching your video and among many I liked it and I was convinced by your way of working. I don't understand why for the YLOD error there are different solutions: thermal paste replacement or capacitor replacement? Could you possibly repair my ps3? How much would it cost to ship it from Italy? Thank you in advance for your attention

you didnt remove the ihs , so this will ylod again very fast. the paste in the ihs is rock solid. it allows some heat to mass through but only about 50% so it WILL die again and fast.

So these kinds of reworks can be done with just air? What if I wanted to use the same factory solder balls by not moving the chip and using liquid flux to help the factory solder reflow better? I just need some files off, then I dunno what I will do with it. It was a gift after all.
