Rebecca from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners took the internet by storm in just a few days. But, do you know why that really is?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners released onto Netflix just a couple months ago this 2022 season, and it’s safe to say the anime took the internet by storm, from beautiful art to intense discussion and analysis. While David and Lucy started the show off, and so got a lot of immediate love, the real favorite character of the anime came to be Rebecca, the short anime girl apparently everyone was waiting for. From her wild side guns blazing, to the softer moments of unrequited love she has, her story intertwines with David and Lucy’s, as well as the wider Cyberpunk world’s, to draw a video essay’s worth of depth from a fairly minor character. While some of the other punks, like Maine and David, embody denial, believing themselves to be special in a cruel world, filling the empty space with cybernetic enhancements, Rebecca comes to embody the opposite: acceptance. She lives in an awful world and knows it, but she makes happiness from the small moments corporations like Arasaka haven’t yet stolen. Does Rebecca teach us a lot from how she lives and her ending? A lot actually. Enough to dedicate a whole anime analysis video essay to. So, let’s explain her character in depth!

gratitude... that's one way, to see the little things that are right, that are good... and too have joy in it. you said it in your little rant "they try so hard to be happy searching for it and not being rewarded for all their toils, hard work and effort"... I think partially that is why... because they are always searching for it, *instead* of being grateful for the little we have and seeking to better each other and their own lives while doing so. though many don't do that and seek specifically only their pleasure [the elites]... because they see it as a zero-sum game... Happiness isn't zero-sum... its quite the opposite. honestly I have found it interesting where if you read the ancients... it seems they have found the answer... at least that's what I think, because they already had to deal with that crap before we did... whether we have realized it or not... and I think Rebecca in edgerunners found the same truth... though I must ask... is her way wrong for her dying? or is it wrong because there is no happiness in it? Hope you have a great day & Safe Travels!

In response to your conclusion, happiness is like Jiu-Jitsu; the harder you try, the more you're wasting energy firstly. Secondly, just like Jiu-Jitsu, you got to know what you're looking for if you want to stop wasting energy. Lastly, just like any other fight in life, it gets a lot easier when you have homies backing you up.💯💯💯

I'm just now realising that when Rebecca said "He was mine to kill." she wasn't talking about it in a "my sibling is annoying as hell" way, but likely talking about putting him down when - not if - he went cyberpsycho. I fully believe she was expecting that moment and totally prepared to do it at any time. And that just hurts even more, because she loves so fiercely but the world around her denies her the chance for that love to last, and so all she can do is put things to rest when it's called for.

@@SergioLeonardoCornejo Rebecca was to me becoming a cartoon mascot. She along with the car chase to orisaka tower was immersion breaking. Her death snaps us back to reality. The writers could have avoided this by having her sustain injury. Cuts bruises would have went a long way with rebecca's character. Lucy ran shadow ops and wetwork for he man. @@SergioLeonardoCornejoNot trying to change your mind, but to me she was more irradeemable than Lucy in that she knew herself that she wouldn't be able to leave that life. She was the cyberpunk life imbued and made the most of it while she could and knew that it would take her to her death. Her accepting it just made it harder for us an audience to accept that reality as we grew to love her more and more until the inevitable death that awaited her in the end. In my mind a succesful and good written story about a very lovable and at the same time very tragic character that could do nothing against the cold and hard circumstances that shaped her since she was just a child. Lucy on the other hand said early that she wanted out from that life, and tried everything to get out from it, and tried to get David with her. She never even considered Rebecca since she probably knew it was a lost cause.

Man, when David was grinning and talking to Rebecca as if she was his mother, then seeing Rebecca's distraught facial expression followed with a timid smile and agreeing to fulfill David's last wish when she realized that he's pretty much gone psycho, driving head first into a suicide mission, was one of the most heartbreaking moments of them bonding together. heart aches were felt.

Rebecca, though her death was brutal, and heart wrenching, died happy. She died as she lived. Honestly, guns blazing, caring for her friends. Loud and proud. Free. In her mind, she saved Lucy, and helped fulfill David's dream. She helped the man she loved most, through his biggest challenge, and despite it all, never left his side. She had thought she had lost David, when he went psycho, but got to see Lucy bring him back to sanity. I'm sure it broke her heart to admit Lucy was the only one who could "Save" David, but her heart must have rejoiced at seeing the man she loved come back to reality. She dies before she witnesses David lose. In her mind, she's won the fight, the heroes have swooped in and saved the day. Same as they always do. There was never enough time for her to process the agony that was moments away. She'll never feel that loneliness that Lucy is left with, when she reaches the moon. She deserved so much better than what she got, but she died as she lived. Making the best of every second.

That and the fact that she is the embodiment of what being a real friend is about. So many people become friends with others just because they want something more and when that doesn't come they just drift apart. Rebecca is the polar opposite. She loves David, she WANTS David, but she also accepts David doesn't feel the same way and she still goes with him to the bitter end, because she doesn't wants the D, she wants him to be happy, for real.

The secret to happiness is having low expectations. You look at Rebecca and see her as the happiest of the group? She has the least amount of expectations. She loves David, doesn't expect to get him. She loves life, doesn't expect to survive. It's only when you're ready to let go of everything that you're free to enjoy anything. It's often our attachments to expectations that bring about tthe greatest sorrows. In a strange way, greed and ego, the very things that come to define a corporation end up being the downfall of the individual at the soul level.

I don't see Rebecca as having low expectations, nor does she have suicidal tendencies. She just doesn't hold back he thoughts and feelings or beat around the bush. While she is brash and quick to anger, she still displays more emotional maturity and restraint than most guys I know that are quick to fight the moment their egos gets even slightly challenged. She gave David that massive tip because she had already taken a liking to him, and even though it isn't communicated directly in the show, it is possible that she knew or at least had an idea of his money problems. My experience with running a business and watching huge amounts of money easily coming and going really doesn't make that moment seem all that crazy to me, but to David, who grown up having to watch his mom scrape by, that was insane.

I’d like to think that the song “I really want to stay at your house” is from the prospective of Rebecca about her love for David. With lyrics like “So, get away Another way to feel what you didn’t want yourself to know And let yourself go” and “You know you didn’t lose your self-control” talking about how she is warning David of his cyberpsychosis when he’s trying to avoid it. And with “Cause I really wanna stay at your house” and “But you know how much you broke me apart“ shows her love for him but him doesn’t feel the same way.

Happiness is a moment, not a state of being. Happiness cannot persist. It's only achieved through struggling and surviving hardship. The meaning to our lives isn't our suffering or our success. It's the moments in between, the "struggle", finding meaning behind our very struggle is the meaning to our lives. Happiness will always we something we chase after, but it's an impossible perfection, it's a human right to persue happiness but guaranteed happiness isn't deserved

Yet she also reveals why she's so attractive to many: she's incredibly loyal, she's accepting, she's honest, she's funny, she's passionate, she's insight. On the other side we see that in Rebecca, like many in the crew it's her poor boundaries that ultimately gets her killed. The sad reality was there was no saving David. You know the saddest part, and it took me until now to realize this, is that David shared his mother's fate, ultimately. Both he and his mother ultimately lived to fulfill someone else's dream, and whether it was David going to a fancy school while his mother forsook her own health insurance, ultimately costing her own life, or Lucy getting to the moon without the man she loved who helped her get there, the result was the same. The person they tried to help would have preferred to have them in their life rather than get that opportunity.

Suffering is a constant, unpredictable inevitability in life- you cant change that. For people like me who are in it for the happiness and nothing else that means constantly clawing away at life to get whatever happiness is for us in the moment knowing full well we'll lose it eventually. You never just achieve happiness and credits roll, its just as much of a constant, never-ending, and immensely difficult struggle as any other life goal. Edgerunners causes another existential crisis. We are here for you man. Watching my mom sacrifice so much so I could have half a chance at a decent life. Then finding someone I love that I am slowly destroying my body and chipping away at my sanity to make their dream come true because they deserve to be happy.... this show about killed me too lol. The ending of your videos resonated a lot with me. On the surface I live a comfortable life, but everyday I go to work feeling no purpose in what I do. It’s a means to an end I’m told but what for? Money? Is that it? I don’t want to merely survive I want to live. I want to have stories to tell my children and grandchildren one day, I want to live while I’m young, I want to be happy while I’m young. I want to meet new people and actually feel a human connection with people but is tear I watch the world tear itself apart because of trivial things like race, gender and sexuality. It’s now my goal escape this existence and teach the skills long forgotten that’s needed to be truly free and self sufficient.

When Rebecca says “He was mine to kill, and you took that from me!” She wasn’t referring to killing her own brother. She was referring to the fact she wanted to kill the cyberpsycho but was knocked out by Kiwi’s hacking. She was yelling at the gang, not at the dead cyberpsycho.

Look at the relationship between the shots. She blows the head of the cyberpsycho apart while screaming at it "he was mine to kill!" The shot then moves to Pilar's splattered head saying "You took that from me!" Cinematic language states the relationship between 2 shots communicates more than any individual shot or line. From this is becomes clear that she was screaming at the psycho that he took something from her. What her reasoning was, we can speculate, but it is clear in cinematic language that she was screaming at the dead psycho that he took Pilar from her and he was her's to kill.

Before that, I didn't really think that Rebecca loved David... now it hurts even more. Reminds me of how I beat my friend... yes, she had a boyfriend, I knew that. But I liked her as a person, we had common interests and I even told her directly that I love her, that's why I want her better life, I wanted her to choose with whom she wants to be in a relationship. Being there as a friend suited me completely. I wanted to be her friend, I even wanted to see her marry her boyfriend and be happy... It wasn't a friend zone in the usual sense. It was platonic love, not a selfish desire to get this person. It hurts even more when such a person rejects you as a friend, neglects you, neglects him/herself, follows the path of self-destruction at a time when you remain loyal to the end and wish all the best to this person. It's the same thing that Rebecca must have felt when she looked at David. She loved him to the very end no matter what and was ready to destroy the whole world for the sake of her friend. It's cute, but it hurts so much.

But I have no right to want someone that bad never have or will. But I guess we keep looking for that person who’s fates matches our own. It’s just a journey but like you are with me man. Great video, overall very well done character analysis. Your mini heartfelt rant at the end touched me, even if I know people can't simply be happy, even if we where to live in paradise. My only hope for you is that when the opportunity to feel happy present themselves to you and to those you love and care about, you and those you cherish seize those opportunities. Cause if they care half as much about you, as you seem to about them, they too also would want to see you happy. And although we humans as a species cannot simply stay happy, we shouldn't let ourselves needlessly suffer, life is both far too short and way too long for that.

So much sadness whether that means poverty, loss, drug addiction, or just the ways in which we fall short as people. It all adds up to such a bleak and cruel existence for so many. My life is objectively decent and I can find joy in my own life. I’ve never really been hard to please. TL;DR Rebecca's the best example of healthy, honest, blunt emotional expression in a series where the tragedy befalls upon the two who weren't honest or open with their feelings for each other. On top of that, she's cheerful and strong on top of the fact that she's a ride or die loli type of girl. Of course she took the internet by storm! But the reason why she has retained her status as the fan favorite character is likely because of her juxtaposition to the setting of Night City. She displays full acceptance of the truth whenever she gets it, because as you said in the video, she has no time for the fakeness or the bullshit. An example of a well written female character with just the right appeal to grip the audience without turning them away by being the protagonist's love interest. The internet: "Wait, so you're saying this badass, psycho, ride or die, loli chick who is capable of expressing herself directly and shows a healthy ability to manage her emotions, though remains extremely passionate is not just all that but... she's also SINGLE?! SIMPTERNET WAIFU BLUEPRINT MUCH, CHOOMBA?"

She was the first character that made me go "hey, she's just like me" and it felt great, despite the amounts of suffering she went through before her very sudden death. But she knew it was coming, and she still stuck around. Rebecca is literally the definition of "ride or die". (Also being a Rebecca in a world full of Davids is not fun. I have a David in my life; she's the one who wants to fix the world and gets mad that she can't. I love her so much and I've had to watch her go through hell because of this world. I've been right there beside her the whole time and wouldn't trade that decision for anything. Hell, just the other night we were out at a drag show when Club Q was shot up. She took it almost personally and she felt so much pain because of what some asshole with a gun did to our community, but me I wasn't gonna give that shit any of my happiness or let them take away from the night out that I had. It's so interesting thinking on how we each deal with this world in our own way.
