Robert, thank you so much for this fantastic series. I love the intelligent informal conversation, the natural humour, the geniality and the selected gusets who are genuinlt very interesting... all set in a very familiar secnario. Brilliant! I’ve only watched 3 episodes but each time it had been with a guest that I thought was ‘a great unknown to the masses’. I hope you enjoy making this production as much as I do watching it.

As a scientist I feel that it is important to emphasise the fact that the gravitational force between two people sitting 1m apart is approximately 4 orders of magnitude smaller than the force between that same person and the moon (assuming both persons weigh 80kg, distance from person to moon is ~356,400km), so the statement made at 11:40 is technically false. Other factors relating to proximity, however, will definitely have greater influence, but aren't numerically comparable.

This whole elevatorgate furore is a storm in a teacup. Rebecca Watson is a bright pleasant woman. She felt nervous in an elevator when some guy asked her politely to come to his room for coffee. So what? She said he was out of line. Maybe yes, maybe no. Maybe in future he will not ask, maybe he will ask outside the elevator where he can stand back a bit further. She felt uncomfortable. She felt he was insensitive. But she did not viciously condemn him. My guess is that he had no malicious intent

Hi Robert, Anyway i'm just wondering, what sort of in car camera mount do you use for your main camera pointing at you, i would like to have a similar set up, where i have a camera at the front facing me and i do sort of reviews, and talks whilst driving. I hope you can help me, sort of guide me as to what i would need , many thanks Robert

I just did the Skeptic Survey and I got 58% This is weird because I always thought I was NOT a Skeptic. I believe in ghosts UFO's etc. It said: "You aren't exactly a skeptic, but you're no blind believer. You doubt what you hear, especially when you hear it for the first time. When it comes to doing your own research, you sometimes fall short. Question your beliefs a little more. You might be surprised what you find out!"

Wow, I had no idea Rebecca Watson would generate such hatred, such incredible male fear and misogyny. She has clearly said something that has really upset a lot of men, there are obviously a lot of men finding this video because they are searching for Ms Watson because she has made them so angry. I don't know what she is supposed to have done/said which has struck so much fear/hatred into a certain group of men, but it has to have been profound.

Watson was approached by a dude in an elevator at an atheist conference in Ireland. Dude told Rebecca that he found her "interesting" and he aksed her if she would like to "come to his room for some coffee." Watson made a video talking about how inappropriate this was, and that men should not approach women in elevators spouting euphemisms for sex. Some felt that she was right whilst others felt that the dude, having accepted her refusal, hadn't done anything particularly wrong. Kryton rules.

@PeytonFarquhar1 I reckon you might be right. Doing some back of envelope calculations I think the force between her and the moon is around 7 orders of magnitude bigger than between her and Robert. This assumes they sit about 1 metre apart and both weigh around 50 kilos. OK, that's an error, but it doesn't blunt the scepticism angle any as far as I'm concerned.

I learned html myself. :) Well, I use a small tutorial, pages like selfhtml de and looked at the source of a lot of pages. Then I went to a IT college and to university studying computer science. Reading up on that 'incident', although it did sound like an odd reaction from her, also made me think "well I wasn't there", I don't know how this other person was acting towards her, so considering she has said a lot of things on this show that I agree with, I think i'm going to side with her for now. I'm going to keep an open mind, but the fact that she bases her life on being rational makes me think she probably had a good reason to react the way she did.

Could you please give an example of and cite a source for one "authoritarian feminist" view she's espoused? I ask out of genuine curiosity because as of yet, I haven't heard her say anything I would consider authoritarian, and so far anyone I've spoken to who claims that they have has consistently failed to defend their position. Again, I'm curious, and not trying to be snarky or to attack your point of view, so please indulge me.

No, it's perfectly skeptical. It's just not rational. The two aren't mutually dependent. Skepticism = Universal Doubt Rationalism = Being persuaded only by evidence and logical reasoning. That being said, whether it is rubbish or not is the burden of the one making the claim towards veracity and not doubt. Please give me quantifiable data regarding the "net affect" of distant stars. As a rationalist, only evidence will convince me of integrity.

Stop trying to frame this in some kind of Woman vs Misogyny light that isn't want this is. There are men and Woman on both sides. What she did was inadvertently start a conflict among the 'skeptic community' by showing some authoritarian feminist views and trying to piggy back upon the movement. It is not right that you try to make it into something it's not for the sake of easily dismissing it.

25:24 There's nothing like a strawman to make it look like you've addressed an issue. I can always tell by the level of derisiveness and dismissiveness with which one discusses, offhandedly or otherwise, the 9/11 "conspiracy theory" (the unofficial one -- or ones, since there are many, and not all are created equal -- as the official "explanation" is itself a conspiracy theory by its very definition, with the only difference really being whether the Enemy is intrinsic or extrinsic), or if one says that the "conspiracy theory" has been thoroughly investigated and debunked, they've probably never seriously looked into the events of that day -- and if they've done _any_ research on the subject at all, it was from a completely one-sided publication that set out to "disprove the conspiracy theories" rather that "objectively investigate the events of that day to determine who was right and wrong" -- like a responsible publication would -- such as, for example, Popular Mechanics; or they caught some Nova special on the topic. If there is indeed one fact about that day (and the months) afterward that can be asserted without a doubt, it's that no such thorough investigation of 9/11 has ever been undertaken by authorities with the power to render official rulings and hold responsible those whose parts in the attack are reveal in said investigation. - Why did it take more than an unprecedented 400 days to start the official 9/11 Commission? - Why was Henry Kissinger (the King of Coverups and the mastermind behind several coups d'état in Central and South America!) tapped to head it -- a job that he ultimately had to decline due to conflicts of interest with regard to his connections to the Bin Laden family -- and why did Condoleezza Rice's close pal, someone with whom she co-authored a book (a feat that requires a serious friendship as well as shared beliefs), take Henry "I eat babies" Kissinger's place? - Why did Cheney and Bush (listed in descending order of authority) "testify" behind closed doors, without any transcripts or note-taking allowed, and together instead of apart (which is what the Commission asked for)? - Why were Generals Eberhart and Meyers, as well as others, confirmed to their positions or even promoted after (allegedly) such a disgraceful failure to defend the country instead of being fire (as one might expect)? No one of consequence was fired. - Why was the military running several concurrent war-game scenarios, some of which dealt with precisely the scenarios that occurred (thus further confusing the FAA and NORAD)? (Couldn't have been better timing for Bin Laden, eh?) Asking this question, as well as others, got her voted out of Congress. - And just consider a moment all those put-options and how the SEC and 9/11 Commission addressed that issue. Too bad, though, 'cause it was a good interview up 'til that point, but no one's perfect, and her flippancy and dismissiveness with regard to that -- and not just hers, but the anyone's -- is down to neurology and information processing and the fact that people generally have a very hard time objectively analyzing the details of such a deliberately traumatizing event. So, I'm not sure there's much to be done.

Robert, this is precisely the sort of thing Watson has, in my opinion justifiably, earned so much scorn for. Assuming her detractors are male, assuming they're white (as if this has relevance in any case), and assuming they must "hate women", assuming they're irrationaly angry, etc. etc. if they happen to dislike this particular woman. It's very silly. Rebecca Watson, quite simply, is a bigot, and a large number of people have finally gotten very tired of her farcical drama queen nonsense.

This woman is the worst thing that has happened to the skeptic community because she is MALE hating, accuses everyone who doesn't agree with her of being a mysogynist or even a rapist if you're lucky. But I guess its only sexist when men do it...(what they do doesn't actually matter because everything they do is sexist, right Becca?)

I agree with your post but it is beautifully ironical. Yes, pretty much the entire human race agrees elevatorgate was a storm in a teacup. While she did not viciously condemn him, she does visciously condemn anyone, male or female, who dares suggest it was a storm in a teacup. She has made it absolutely clear she feels elevatorgate was an example of misogyny, male privilege and rape empathy. People who disagree, like say, you, just don't "get it."

It isn't irrational hatred of a woman, it is disdain for a person. A person who has made sexist, inflammatory, and derogatory statements in an effort to gain attention. Frankly, Ms. Watson would be disliked by the same people even if she were male. It is her attitude and her politics that people dislike.

caseybv74 Well with atheist meaning 'does not believe in (a) God' rather indicates a predefined position, whereas skeptic indicates a questioning of all positions. Which was my flippant point. Mind you it is broader than that, Buddhism for example has no God, but we would struggle to label a Buddhist as an atheist. Perhaps we would be wrong to struggle. I find more in common between skepticism and Anglicanism, say, than with atheism. Maybe says more about the CofE than anything else.
