Mont Marte Pastels and Metallics Review. These Watercolours are Weird?

the only metallic watercolors I've used have been the Gansai Tambi Starry Night set of golds, which I really like! they are very pleasantly opaque and they pretty much do everything I'd want a metallic to do, although Holbein's gold gouache has caught my eye recently 👀

Love the parrots. The paint colours are quite lovely, nice sets to use together. I have an addiction to sparkly paints, have every single Finetec Coliro Watercolors, 😍, so lovely as well then buying all the Kuretake Gansai ones. Jasart also make a few different sets of metallic/pearlescent paints too which are nice. Plus lots of the Daniel Smith speciality ones. Okay, you have sidetracked me from housework…. going to play with paint today instead 😂. Your numbers are growing, that 10,000 is getting closer, and well deserved. Have a great weekend.

Becky is delivering our dose of shiny/sparkly stuff 😍magpies assemble! I've heard of paints coming with a weird kind of "protective" layer that needs to be removed with water before using, but these look just weird in the end 😅nevertheless, the painting turned out so great! I love the bright, happy colors, and the pretty, pretty shiny of course 😃

I have to keep my viewers stocked up in sparkly goodness! 😆 It feels like with the pastel colours, that the whole lot is protective layer, lol! I'm so relieved they activated eventually, otherwise I would have had serious buyer's remorse.

That is a very strange reaction with the paints, but I loved the colours of them especially the metallics! And your art work was so damn cute! I don't have any pastel paints but I do have a really old kuretake gansai golds set which I love! :D

The metallics are more pastel in my opinion than the pastels. I got some cheap pastels recently and they were actually metallic too in the end. A lot of brands seem to overlap the two I think and I don't really know why. Although cheaper brands are great for younger painters and I'm sure they will really enjoy those colours with the metallic.

Haha yes, I'd agree that the metallics also work as pastels. I like the two sets together, even though they were a pain to activate initially. At least they DID activate in the end, lol!

I love kuretake gansai tambi metalics, but I have only tried the metal colors. They have a 6 pan set of pastels also. AND they just came out with a new 24 pan set, but they are pretty spendy. Love the beautiful birds!

I picked up the smaller set from our local discount store called TJ Maxx. It came with 16 colors and a small brush. They didn't do so well at all. They were only $5, so I didn't lose out, but I was hoping they'd be useful. I gave it to my Son to play with, so no paint waste.

We have the British version TKMaxx here. I think some of the cheapest Mont Marte sets are pretty hopeless , and these ones are better but still have issues.

Your painting was gorgeous! I love my shiny supplies. I have the metallic one but mine is shaped differently from Monte mart. I have the shuttle art one for the other colours. I love my kuretake gansai, I think it's called, metallics as well ❤❤

I like the palettes themselves, they seem perfect for larger brushes like the Kuretake paints. But yeah, those colors I would be highly suspect of being actually lightfast and made for long term use. My favorite pastel sets have been the Kuretake 12 set as a compliment to the regular 26 range, and also the Art Nouvoux (I always spell it wrong, sorry). Also the Arteza Gouache set of pastel colors, and the Arteza watercolor pan pastel sets are great for entry/intermediate pastel tones. Pastel tones can really add a lot to a piece. Love how your birdies turned out!

I have the inktense pastel colours set. It’s a little chalky. Inktense are supposed to be permanent when dry but I’d say the pastel set is halfway. More likely to not budge if it’s a thin layer. I use finetec metallics for their intensity but they are not cheap so alternatives are good.

I didn't have much luck with the Derwent pastels set, haha. Too many lights and no darks! I would love to try the Finetec metallics - I've heard good things about them. Expensive as you say!

The parrots are lovely. I have to say, these paints do seem weird. Even for inexpensive or craft paints, the way they are breaking down in the pan is odd. Maybe there were air pockets or you got a funky batch, but at least you got a good painting in the end. Thanks for sharing!

I think they're nice enough for the price and aren't as expensive as some other sets. Apparently both sets are in huge demand from Art Shed and they keep selling out of them, lol.

I wonder if they have a glue component or something in the formula, similar to Gansai paints. Though I have never seen that kind of pitting from Gansai or western watercolors. My assumption would be air bubbles. They are quite pretty once fully activated. Love the parrots!

I'd say air bubbles - the gluey texture is just very strange overall.

Thank you.. I am glad the Mont Marte sets redeemed themselves... they do seem weird in the pans after... the smallest holes indicate have been filled with a syringe, right? I wonder why they didn't cure the paints and put in another layer on top... very strange. As always... your painting was the best part ... very pretty colors.

It looks like they were squirted in all at once maybe, and air bubbles have formed underneath. Not the best method, apparently! 😂

They're really stuck in there, but if I actually use all the paints I would definitely keep the palettes for pouring tube paints into. 😊

what lovely picture . odd paints .....great work though. I have Artway water color Uk brand ..they say they are "light fast" I do not beleive it as they are cheap ...I realy wish they would't say that it is anoying. Anyway Brillo painting xxx Happy Swatching xxxxx

Well, these were technically released late 2023 but it's still early 2024 so I figured that was close enough. 😂 As for ones released this year....not sure!
