Splendid choice. When the studio version of this dropped, The Stones were at their creative peak.

The Rolling Stones have something for everyone... including this jazzy jam. Their 50+ year career has produced a wide array of music from early blues and R&B to rock n' roll... pop... country... jazz... psychedelic ... funk music.

You really need to hear the studio original, it has a tremendous mix, Bobby Keys is still the sax player decades before and they are at their creative zenith as their playing is amazing. The opening riff is better defined and dirty as hell. The Stones will forever be in my top 5 rock bands. Thanks for your honesty, this is always a great jam in concert but it really is a classic on the record. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

I've seen them twice. They are very casual in their performances. This song was a practice session that turned into a jam session and they put it on the album. When you are the Stones you do whatever you feel at the moment.

Charlie. A thing about the Stones is: they're surprisingly *generous.* In a lot of their live performances and best cuts, Mick and Keith hang back! 'At's not laziness; they really like having guest stars and shining the light around--- but, yeah, the album version of this is way tighter and tougher even though they say they improv'd half of it.

MT was/is special.. great choice.. takes serious skill to play the tone that clean and that loud and get a cool sound.. remember, live shows are mixed from the board for the way the arena or room works... and may not "mix down" well for a video track... sometimes they can do two seperate mixes, it's possible they didn't do that here... could be straight from the live desk

Mick Taylor was the Stones' lead guitarist from 1970 to '75. He really helped shape their sound in those years. Without him the albums "Sticky Fingers", "Exile on Main Street", etc., would not sound the way they do. Unfortunately, this show he sounded a bit rusty, the overall tempo was a little laid-back & the audio mix is not so great. Please check out the studio version on "Sticky Fingers"; it is pure magic caught on tape. The long jam on the end is there, but it was not planned ahead. They just went ahead & jammed, & it's simply brilliant. Listen to that a few times, THEN go back & listen to how they laid it out on this live performance. They kinda try to duplicate it, more or less, but in concert, sometimes improvisation hits the mark & sometimes it doesn't. This performance was not a stellar example of the song. Even the Stones can have an off night....whaddya gonna do.... 🤷🏻♂️

Live is great, the energy of the crowd and so on, but for most rock bands at least it’s as much entertainment, whereas the best of their musicality is left in the studio. Such is this one. Great show (haven’t seen them live since the 70’s) but the studio version is far better musically imo.

The early 70s were the best Stones period. Cofounder Brian Jones had left and Mick Taylor one of the best Brit blues guitarists came on freeing up Richards who really wasn't a soloist to come up with funkiest riffs in rock history. Mick Taylor, Peter Green (THE founder of Fleetwood Mac) and Eric Clapton and others all came out of John Mayalls Blues Breaker. Checkout the cover of the Beano album to get glimpse of the scene back then.

You really need to hear the original studio version, it is a much better energy. Both Mick Jagger and Mick Taylor were on their prime game. The story goes that in the studio during the recording, when the main part (first half) of the song was ending, Mick Taylor, drummer Charlie Watts and guest conga player kept the rhythm going, recording tapes were still rolling and Bobby Keys picked up his Sax again and joined in followed by Keith Richards, bassist Bill Wyman, etc. essentially having an extended jam session that "became" the second half of the song. Many long time Stones fans will tell you that the Mick Taylor years (1969-1975) were the best The Rolling Stones ever sounded and their best song writing era. When Mick Taylor left the band in late '75 he was replaced by Ronnie Wood. Regardless of the outcome of this live performance it was great to see both Taylor and Wood together and all the living band members on one stage with the exception of Bill Wyman which would have been completely amazing. If you want to hear epic quality live performances of The Stones in the Mick Taylor era, check out anything from the live album called Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. Mick T. and Keith Richards with their weaving guitar arrangements switching off lead roles, the rhythm section of Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman are the driving force and Mick Jagger vocals and energy was nothing short of amazing during his prime. Recorded on their '69/'70 tour.

Definitely check out the studio version from the Sticky Fingers album. Definitely hot. Much better. Many would consider this blasphemy but personally, the only reason to see a post Mick Taylor period Stones concert is to see the legends in person but don't expect to compare the live versions of their songs to the classic studio recordings. Too sloppy and too many liberties taken. Granted, they've been playing these songs for years and they probably like tochange it up a bit but I have seen the Stones live a couple times a while after Ron Wood replaced Mick Taylor and there were times it took me almost to the chorus to figure out what song they were playing because they took SO many liberties....and I was a BIG Stones fan my whole life. I know these songs. I've even covered some of them in a couple bands I played with. For me it was a disappointment. But, to each his own I guess. Check out this link where Mick Taylor plays with Carla Olson live. He plays a song called "Sway" also from the Sticky Fingers album. Much tighter and you recognize the song right away. His soloing is right up my alley too. He takes his times and massages it to perfection IMHO: Here's the lionk. I hope you like it- kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5Ommol3ZqhjpdE

The extended solo being lengthy, is/was the point. The original song was supposed to end when Jagger stops singing, and fade out from there. But while recording it, they decided (on the spot) to just keep going, and MT improvised from there. I (somewhat) agree that this may long in a live setting and for non-diehard fans. But there’s some context lost with respect to the songs creation. Would have to agree on the heavy focus of the background d singers.
@brianmurphy86272 жыл бұрын
I've always felt sort of two ways about this song. I loved the beginning, which rocked, and then the second part, at least on the album release, was a letdown, Yes, it had the sax and some other rhythmic things going for it, but it was all over the place, incoherent. This live version was a big improvement. Mick Taylor was actually in the band in the early '70's., There are a few reasons why he didn't make it with the band, depending on whom you believe. One is that Taylor couldn't keep up with the band's hard partying. Another, which seems more credible, was that Taylor was a far better guitarist than Keith Richards, who got tired of being shown up on stage. Richards was a founding member of the band, so Taylor had to go. Could explain why the guitar players couldn't play well together live. As always, an honest, thoughtful and great reaction!

An absolutely pathetic version. There was no feeling in it, just running the time of the clock. You gave it more excitement than it deserved. I couldn't listen to it all, so I fast forward it. You should listen to the studio version. And grab the true soul of it all. You are missing all the fantastic percussions etc. Mick Taylor plays in the original studio recording, and is a huge part of the melodic feel. The vocals in the original are fantastic. I think you should listen to the original and get the true perspective. You u will be blown away by the original. What you say does have validity. But you are making an analysis on a treble performance .
