The 1980 movie Battle Beyond the Stars (produced by Roger Corman) tells essentially the same story as Rebel Moon and does that in less than two hours. There's no need for a movie like this one to consist of two parts. This is another good example of how a story is unnecessarily drawn out to create a franchise whereas a single movie would suffice.

@IAMBATwal
@IAMBATwal 9 ай бұрын
When you wonder why us Snyder fans get tired or even trying to have civil discourse over his films when people like you say idiotic things like this. Any director can take as much time as they have to tell their story. It’s no different than books or comics, or tv shows. Movies have always been as long as they needed to be. Zack’s a fan of depth and he always delivers that in his actual realized visions. For PG13 Rebel Moon he did Netflix a favour so they could milk it. It’s business but unlike the dipshits at WB he didn’t have to fight for a directors cut because Netflix said “fuck yeah we want that” he shot variation scenes. Once for PG13 once for rated r and then more for that version. He wants to tell his story why do you have such a problem with it? Who are we be it fans of the guy or not to tell him how a film needs to make sense? Many conventions of writing and filmmaking and storytelling have evolved past ancient times so why don’t we just let him cook? If you’re so wise to his “flaws” and intricacies as a filmmaker than instead of combating everything he does why don’t y’all try to go in with an open mind? Saying he can’t tell a story in less than 10-15 hours is such bs I’m sorry. He just gave you a competent cut to that point. If this wasn’t your jam watch the original directors cut or don’t watch anything. You don’t have to love the guy but god damn anyone who isn’t a Snyder fan wonders why we love him, I’ll tell you the very basic reason, because we UNDERSTAND HIM! Maybe it takes a dedicated passion and love for the guy as a human first to truly respect and grasp his qualities. I prefer to stay stanning and grasp the man and embrace his art at it stands and evolves than delve into calling him out on what works for him. Some of the greatest pieces of art have been over 3-4 hours don’t be keeping this heat for Zack go back and call out the legends too then. Zack’s a legend in my book and I can’t wait for more give me all the hours no stress 😎

@@IAMBATwal First, I'd recommend paragraphs when you go that long. Second, I disagree that Zack's a fan of depth. His adaptations often strip depth in favour of aesthetic callouts. They have the illusion of depth, but often defy deeper readings, because he seemingly directs based on what he find coolest. Which he certainly can do, but nobody has to call him artistic for it, anymore than they have to call me a good DM for shamelessly stealing ideas from better sources. Yes forms have evolved, but if it's incoherent or messy, that's still an issue. Since we're watching it (and paying for it) we get to say if it's good or not. He doesn't have to care, but still. Just because something is long, doesn't make it good. Battlefield Earth wasn't going to be made good by a 3-4 hour cut, for example. Not saying his work's on the same level, but the point is, the issue isn't the length, it's the quality. If it were good, nobody would care about the length. When it comes to his issue of length and needless complexity (again, without depth), my go-to is the Snyder Cut, but it fits for all his work. Why is Martian Manhunter there? Why did he pose as Martha, why do we need such long action sequences to get to a point, why does the firing of the signal arrow take so long, I can keep going. And then there's all the Frank Miller references/adaptation, often without understanding the fascism of Miller, and the politics behind that, or the adaptation of Alan Moore's work without fully grasping anything beyond 'edgy superheroes are cool'. Why all the Jesus and God shit in his Superman/Lex Luthor adaptation when this theme really doesn't go anywhere beyond Superman being good and coming back from the dead one time? Why does his Superman care about humanity beyond 'there's a woman here he likes?' Again, I can keep going, but the point is there's a lot of themes and ideas flying around, but very little gets real development or focus, even in his extended cuts where he has significant creative control. As I said, length without depth, complexity without necessity. You say you like him because you understand him? I say I hate his style and dislike him on a personal level because I understand him. Like I'm sure he's nice to talk to, but going by his filmmaking and what personal views have bled through there, I don't much care for the man. And I've genuinely tried to look for something to like beyond the aesthetics. But even they're taken from elsewhere. Ultimately, he's just a less interesting Uwe Boll.

When it did its own Star Wars cantina scene I thought it looked great especially with that parasite monster. But when it devolved into a get three crew together type thing especially with excessive green screens I completely lost interest. Idk why he thinks a shirtless guy taming a giant eagle horse is entertaining but to me it was the opposite of the robot and the girl scene.

Granted, we all complain about studio interference and idolize the creative vision of a singular filmmaker. But instead of tightening the plot via script reworks and editing so that it could make one singular movie, this is acts one and a half ish of a movie instead, which makes for a poor movie, which anyone who has ever had to read or write a screenplay will tell you is a bad idea.

To Snyder fans. 1. Mashing together everybody else's visual designs does not make you a _visionary director._ 2. Pointless and repetitive overuse of slow motion gets boring after the 300th time (pun intended). 3. Endless pages of exposition (like an rpger boring the rest of the team with their character's dark and tragic past) is not a screenplay. 4. There's a very broad line between "being influenced by" and outright copy and pasting other people's ideas and calling it "world building." 5. No matter how well you can draw or put a picture together, film making always comes down to story, Story, *STORY.*

I agree 100% with this review. At this point, it seems Snyder doesn't have a solid grasp on how to structure a film in 2 hours. He needs a stronger editor of both his scripts and his films. For example, this film is (correctly) universally panned for the lack of character development. We keep seeing new characters and then move on to the next new character. It's like Snyder read the synopsis of "The Seven Samurai" and said to himself, "I can do that." Rather than build up some kind of character development for the rest of the "team", Snyder thought "let's have a one minute landing sequence on every planet." The visual excesses are relentless. But that visual candy sacrifices any kind of development of the story or the characters. He can only actually tell a story if he has 3 or 4 hours to do it. That's a sign of a bad director and a bad writer. The film industry Is full of both that can get it done in a normal runtime without the need for an extended "director's cut." It shows he's a lazy editor that doesn't know how to be efficient. There's a lot of potential in this film and the world/universe Snyder built is cool and interesting. He's has an amazing visual style. He just doesn't have a solid grasp on how to actualize it.

Together they train the villagers in weapon use and battle tactic. The evil force returns and the prepared villagers fight off the attack. The end. Sounds familiar? I really enjoy and appreciate your excellent work, Dan. I must part with you on the director's version thing though. I more often than not prefer extended and director's cuts. But I understand your POV, too, and...do agree also, as there have been some director's cuts that perhaps didn't improve the overall. :-) and Merry Christmas to you!

Innumerable critics have praised the visuals in this movie but I just don't see it. Maybe I've been spoiled by the Guardians movies and their vibrant, visually arresting worlds, but I'm not wowed by a series of brown dustbowls that look like they could be from any other sci-fi movie of the last 20 years, no matter how convincing the green screen looks. It's like watching Star Wars but Luke never leaves Tatooine. And I know Snyder does slow-mo action scenes that look like lovely screensavers, but he's been doing them for over 15 years now, and I don't really feel like patting him on the back for showing Ultralord at show and tell for the 7th week in a row.

From all the bad reviews I went in with very low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't bad. Sure it has it's problems (saw the plot twist from miles away) and is basically the same story from 7 Samurai, Magnificent 7 and 3 Amigos, but at least it didn't hesitate to kill off likeable characters, didn't make Kora an OP, never wrong, unstoppable Mary-Sue, and laid the seeds for a major twist. This is after all a new galaxy and I look at 'Child of Fire' as a foundational element rather than the main course. 3.5/5 for me. Agree that they should just have had one version the extended hard R version, even better, release it as an episodic series taking their time to give each character a real introduction.

I wish it looked better. To me his films have been sort of feeling like a really amazing photoshop creation. Like too much of a collage. Lots of great elements but somehow they just don’t mesh right to feel natural. It’s a stylistic choice I believe, for this film tho it just felt like it needed more work to really pull of visually.

At the beginning I was excited about the movie being a "Part One", expecting to find characters and a story that I would look forward to seeing more of in the sequels to come. But long before the end of Part One I realized that if this whole project just disappeared and there were no more parts to it, there was an EXTREMELY high chance that I wouldn't even notice. Cardboard characters and a cut & paste storyline with not one iota of originality destroyed any interest in wanting any future parts to this travesty. I could maybe understand if this were made by someone still in directing school as a class project to learn from. But to have it come from someone who has had years of experience in the business making movies with extremely high budgets is mind-staggering! All I can think of is that he somehow destroyed his life to the point where he was in heavy debt to loan sharks who were threatening him with extreme bodily harm if he didn't cough up some cash soon, and slapped together something that would enable him to appease them for a while. Nothing else comes to mind to explain why a big name director would even want his name to be associated with this travesty.

I really wasn't impressed with the movie. It was Discount Star Wars. As you said, Snyder made no bones about the fact that it started out as a Star Wars script, but I don't think he changed enough about it after Disney rejected it. The cantina scene (including a humanoid creature harassing one of our heroes), the tentacle thing, and even light sabers make an appearance. All of that could be forgiven, though, if the rest of the story wasn't as paper-thin as a porno. 90%+ of it is getting the band together, and all of that amounted to: "Join us!" "No!" "Please‽" "Well, okay....". There was barely any characterization, and a lot of that took place in flashbacks that didn't even bother to give us the whole story. It reminds me a little, now that I think about it, of how they handled Rey in the Star Wars sequels. Just like in those movies, Snyder made the mistake here of keeping her pivotal moment away from the audience for too long.

Somehow this movie felt slow and rushed at the same time. Zack Snyder has always been a visual director, someone else should ALWAYS write for him. After watching the film, I couldn't even thumbs up or down because a down would mean I don't like sci-fi adventure movies (and Netflix algorithm might not recommend more in the future) but there is no way this is a thumbs up LOL.

Visually Snyder is a unique and talented director. But with story telling and writing IMO he is total garbage. I still think the best movie he's directed is the remake of Dawn of the Dead, he was still fairly new and hadn't quite fallen into his "Snyderisms" (slow-mo, etc) plus the movie itself was written by James Gunn.

Zack Snyder is an author, who thinks he’s much deeper, better in writing and smart than he really is. He is absolutely talented in visual and technical part, but as far as the story, characters, emotions and deeper problems go - he was never that good really. And nothing gives any hope that this will ever change.

It really did feel too long... I liked when the Han Solo stand-in had his twist in the story, but there were other characters they picked up along the way that I wasn't sure why they were there at all. Like, aside from some visually cool scenes in the final battle, they didn't even get to use their abilities that they'd shown earlier. I really liked the guy who rode Buckbeak - I mean, the giant bird thing - and thought he'd do some more cool stuff with critters. I dunno... I may watch the second one, just to see if there's payoffs down the road, but I'm not really excited about it.
