I have a Nova Saturn lathe and have had it for about 5 years and I love it It runs silky smooth and very quiet. It shows no signs of any impending problems. I think Nova makes a good product. Speaking of tools I'm still using some of my Benjamins Best tools that were my first set. Really nothing better than good wood and sharp tools! Welcome Back

Al, inspired by you, I have put riser blocks on my 12x36, 50 year old Delta to make it a 16x36 inch lathe, I have made a steady rest similar to yours and have made a number of tools by purchasing carbide bits and using scrap wood and copper pipe to form the tools. You have been a great inspiration to me and I am sure many others. Glad to see you making videos again.

Wow Thank you very much. I am thrilled you been able to do a few things inspired by me but really it's all in the individuals drive not by mine. Glad it worked out well. Imust say that even more inportant that the riser blocks was the VFD. the ability to slow down to safe speeds. I think that was the biggest improvent I could have done. unfortunatly a bit expensive. Al. I was able to make my lathe by installing a free 2 horse power tread mill DC motor with its electronics. I had to install a jack shaft in order to get enough torque at low speed. On the lowest speed, I can get it down to about 50 rpm which I use to apply finish. I can also turn at approx 1800 rpm. If I need higher speed, I use the next larger pulley to get approximately 3600 rpm.

Sorry to hear that Man you need to get those basics. You can't enjoy it without some tools LOL. You need cutting tools and a live center at the very least. A chuck makes life easier but things can be turned without it if cost is a factor but they have a chuck for under 100 dolars but that will be a game changer. It was for me. Take care . Be safe

There doesn't seem to be a great deal of difference between your little Nova and my little axminster jobby. I don't know the price or origin of the nova but mine is Chinese made ,cheapish, cheerful and does the job and as we say in my neck of the woods "lovely old job" 😃 Good advice and video as always mate! cheers, Bram

Well thank you my friend as usual. I have seen you lathe in action and it looks as promising as any. The Nova is far from being high end when it comes to price $800.00 range but compared to some heavy hitters such as Robust, Powermatic or even Laguna it is less that half the price. I think it is in the same price point as Jet and Delta but with a slightly larger swing. Take care . Be safe

Good to hear from you again and this interesting talk about your new smaller lathe. A present to myself for my 83rd birthday last January 1st, was a mini 12 x 18 lathe with three pulleys and electronic variable speed. So far I am impressed by its performance, I own four decent metal lathes, so I am not new to making stuff, just added wood as the material to turn. I have made a decent set of carbide tools, which work well on our very hard Tasmanian timber’s. Lots of fun making Xmas gifts for family & friends this year. Had some spinal surgery a couple of weeks ago so the wood shop is off limits for a while, but something to look forward to in the New Year.
