At our small studio there are limited people who know scripting for production. The rest, like myself, know basically nothing about coding. That being said, I wish I did. Our TD and assistant TD handles all the pipeline stuff which requires knowledge of coding.

You really don't need to know much beyond the basics. Most of what you need should be available within Houdini python package. You learn better techniques by coding and code reviews. I'm not sure why this tutorial needs to go as deep as compilers.

0 python knowledge is "required" of an Fx Artist, be he a beginner, mid, senior, lead or Supervisor. That said, some will have knowledge of It, and that added know-how can be very useful in scenarios that involves interacting with the pipe, or to add more advanced functionalities to your HDA's. Some companies will give those people the title of FX TD, a role whose description can vary from company to company; But generally is described as an Fx artist who is more programming oriented. If you are a beginner though, It could be wise to familiarize yourself first with the "classic tools and workflows" Houdini has to offer, before jumping on these added functionalities. But then again, follow your passions, and if python is what you want to learn, well who is anyone to stop you, It's still a very cool knowledge to have :) How much python is regularly use in production? A lot, but it is generally handled by the Pipeline Td's

How well does vim work with C++ programming with Unreal Engine? I'm used to my IDE (JetBrains Rider) and constantly making changes, compiling, running UE, making changes there and going back to Rider. Abandoning that would be something holding me back from taking the learning curve to implement vim.

I mean vim is an editor, you type words in it, Rider is another one, if you know how to compile, well you compile it, we use vim for the navigation efficiency, it not like vim is compiling or making UE faster, it's like asking if I write faster with this blue pen or with this red pen, vim will be like a super pen, where you can change colors or change tips instantly

Yes I understand it's a powerful editor. It's just Rider integration with Unreal is very deep: from syntax, intelligent autocompletion, to automatic includes, automatic function definitions when I declare them in the header file etc. So vim would have to be a LOT faster than even that to make it worth the hours upon hours of the learning curve. Atm I can't find any good resources for vim plugins for UE.

@@dalelinney8437 you can do all of that with vim, for example when I type html, my lsp creates a whole document ready to just add content, the same with cpp, I have a configuration that by typing 2 characters, it creates the headed files with all the guards, classes and derived classes or whatever you want, but yes it requires a lot of time configuring it at the beginning, mine it's like 7 years of configurations lol
