This reminded me of when I brought back a Suzuki 750 motorcycle with 4 carburetors on it from Japan in 1978. l had to go to San Diego to pick up the motorcycle. It was 4 months in transit and as you can imagine all the gas had turned to shellack in the carburetors. I had to use the little hand tools that come with the motorcycle and tear apart all 4 carburetors and clean out the the gunk just to get it to barely run to take it out of there, it took me about 3 hours of work and ran bad for about 200 miles. That was my 1st lesson to never leave an engine with gasoline sitting in it over long storage.

Very well explained and very thorough, thank you!! I just picked up a 2007 Nissan 8hp longshaft that's sat for a really long time. It's very similar to yours as I believe Tohatsu makes all these smaller outboards.. I'm getting ready to go through it and rebuild car, replace a few cosmetics and hopefully get it running again (previous owner said it would make oil: fuel would get in- and mix with the oil, in the oil reservoir- so I'm hoping I'm successful in fixing it). I also hope I can get it to stop doing that, without having to replace the fuel pump. We'll see when I get it all apart. First things first.. gotta make me a stand (might borrow your idea of saw horse clamps and 2x4's 😁👌).

The saw horses worked on but I ended up stopping by a marine resale shop and they happened to have an outboard stand. It was $40 and I picked it up to make it easy to roll it in and out of the garage. Good luck on the Nissan and thanks for the kind words on the video.

You did a great job showing how to take the carburetor apart and rebuild it. What outboard motor brand would you recommend for a small dingy?

I don’t have a ton of experience with different brands. We had an old johnson 8 that I always had problems with but it was old. This mercury 9.9 is good for sure and we have a 30 Yamaha on our other tender and it is also really. I’ve (but the Yamaha is a 2 stroke)

@SVDreamChaser, my carb looks exactly the same as yours , its from a 2008 9,9 4-stroke. The only difference is that the Main Jet (the largest diameter screw, is a massive screw with no hole in it, and the low speed jet bottom screw has a hole in the center.. Is that correct on some models, or has some parts been replaced some wrong parts? (They cannot be swapped since they have different diameter. I am having idle problems.. And im really scratching my head now because all photos and drawings I find looks like your carb..

HI, I have the same engine as you but where I connect my throttle lever from the carb to the wheel, the wheel rotates and has a decent amount of play in it without me turning the throttle. Does the nut that holds the throttle pulley need to be tightened? It means my throttle will only engage when I'm almost at full power, in both reverse and forward, making small adjustments in power pretty much impossible. Thanks!

That is strange. Where the throttle arm connects to the carb there is a small wheel that rotates. Is there a chance that is on backwards or wrong?

I just looked at the video again. Pause it at about 21:25 and look at the little black wheel (my left hand partially blocks it) but the throttle arm connects to the bin and it should be toward handle side of the engine.

I have 9.9 merc 4 stroke. Rebuilt carb, rebuilt fuel pump, drained gas tank, cleaned it, installed all new fuel lines, motor will start with starter fluid, runs for two three secs and shuts off. fuel to carb, im totaly frustrated.

@stonygreek That stinks. I have seen in the past where the rebuild kit didn’t do it and I had to replace the whole carb. It worked after doing that. It has been a little while but this is the one I used when I needed to just replace it for a 9.9 HP 4stroke Mercury. Check the year of yours against this. Mine had a small difference but I was able to take off the part that was different from the old carb and put it on the new one. Ran like a champ. amzn.to/3BOnUWu

@@Svdreamchaser Thanks for the response. i ordered a fuel pump and a new carb. sometimes you just have to start over! this 9.9 is my kicker motor and it gets expensive to troll with the 150 all day. love your channel, saved me many times

I installed the new fuel pump, all fuel lines, filter and new carb and it runs better than it ever has. one pull insted 5 or 6!
