Glad that people still remember these games. Too bad that not many Zombie (or apocalypse games) are focused on rebuilding society.

I was obsessed with this game. Around 3 years ago I played the new mobile game, which is pretty cool because of the factions and the story (Although I am not a fan of the cartoony graphic style), and I remember being obsessed to the point of playing till 3 AM untill my phone got too hot to be held. The Zombies Are People Too event is basically a choice to have an extra layer of difficulty. Can you win the game while your survivors keep throwing themselves to the zombies? Even your most skilled survivors are easily swayed to jump into the horde and get eaten.

Ah, I remember it fondly. I did it during my first blind playthrough cause I needed the happiness boost. It backfired quickly. I remember having real good progress up to that point. About half the town reclaimed. About 100 souls within our walls. I had even secured the helipad by then. And then someone came up asking for a church. Anderson. I would later come to curse his very name, but for now, I allowed it. His texts were concerning, but I paid it no mind. 'Probably just being hypothetical'. Decorated graveyards? Sure. Whatever makes them happy. I needed the boost, and besides, I had enough soldiers to secure the city anyhow. I thought myself on top of the world, thoroughly crushing every zombie hoard to come my way. I had it in the bag, or so I thought. In hindsight, I had not been paying attention to morale at all, too lost in the big picture. I was rushing to secure the whole city, uncaring for the losses along the way. Progress, above all else. It made me lenient. No. It made me outright dependent on Anderson and his Church of the Dead. He provided an easy solution to the happiness issue. So when the choice came to crack down on some people who were protesting the Church? I gave down the order. 'Heretics' were to be punished, regardless of if I personally cared for their religion or not. The Church was just too important to lose. All just a means to the end, after all. Then people started fucking throwing themselves into the hordes. The church threw massive parties every time this happened, halting everything. Everything. It was like a double barrel shotgun blast to the face. Every death meant another celebration. Every celebration meant no progress. I could tell instantly that this would be the end. An infinite death spiral for the city at large. I couldn't afford to bleed manpower at such a daily rate. And there was no way I could progress further into the infested suburbs when I couldn't even get anyone to work 2 days in a row. My lust for progress had blinded me to what I enabled. I cursed Anderson and his bloody cult! But it was all too late. There was no second chance to rein in the Church. Anderson was all powerful. He was above me. My callous words meant nothing, compared to the man who would bring us 'enlightenment'. In despair, I searched the town for anything that could stop this madness. Perhaps a hidden option for a revolt from a police station or something. Then, I noticed something in the outskirts of our compound, barely secured by a buffer zone of maybe 2 or 3 blocks. The Helipad. It had been a low priority mission I had placed like 1 lady to work on in the background while I 'conquered' the city. Now, it was our last hope. I scrambled to put every resources I could into repairing the helicopter, unsure if it would even save us or not. Every soul left was to report to the helipad, no exceptions. It didn't matter if the majority had barely any building experience at all. I needed the manpower. So I closed the labs, the schools, the farms, any remaining builds, and even the guard posts. Besides, no pointing in guarding when every attack saw someone willing to jump into the hordes willingly. All this concentrated effort, culminating in a 10 days timeline. It seemed doable. Not even 2 weeks. I felt a sigh of relief. Maybe my folly wouldn't catch up with me yet. And then the next 3 days in a row featured a death / celebration. All while nonstop hordes of zombies scaled the walls. Ah, right. I had to make 10 days of progress when every other day was a party and the town fell to the zombies bit by bit. Defenses fell left and right, and entire swaths of lands were lost. Even just a week ago, I would scoffed at the pathetic efforts of the zombies. Now? I could only pray that the helipad itself would remain, no matter what. It was tense. By the final day, it was just 13 people and a handful of town blocks left. The helipad was on the edge of the compound, just barely within our control. The strongest character, besides Anderson, wasn't even a natural 5 in any category. It had been a brutal month and a half. That '10 day' timeline had been hampered by so much bullshit. But we'd finally done it. The helicopter was repaired! Finally, we could escape. I picked 5 hardened souls, barely a fraction of our highest population. Me, the builder lady who'd been initially assigned to the helipad, and 3 other souls. I made sure to take all the pets we could equip as well. I saw that Anderson wasn't an option. I wouldn't have picked him anyway. With that, I put on my cowboy hat and pressed the next day. And then there was another party. Turns out that 'one day' timeline to progress to the ending wasn't like automatic. It had to actually progress in-game. Anderson, spiteful soul he really was, seemed determined to drag us down with him. 4 days of parties in a row, with another horde to wreck our shit. We lost 2 of the initial 5 people aboard the helicopter. We fell to 8 people total, not even double digits at this point. At this point, I was questioning if we were going to get a bad ending instead. Perhaps, it would have been more fitting. I enabled the Church. And thus I should fall to it. But then finally. Liftoff. I screamed from the chopper at Anderson, lone soul he was now with his few remaining cultists. He got what he wanted, I suppose. Honestly, it was an almost complete victory on his end. But I was just grateful to make it out alive. It was a high I still remember to this day. Next city, I swore I would do better. But his words were insidious. I had become an convert, it seemed. I tried to reopen the church with our new home. I was horrified, inside. Luckily, I wrestled control from this mad side of myself and shut it all down instantly. It appeared to be Anderson's last influence. One last act of spite. But it was finally over. I was free to reclaim as many cities as I wanted. It was one hell of a game.

@@hp22h78I think one of the city's downfall in my playthrough was from my childhood self can't understand English to save my people's life, and accidentally condemn the city to the cult's influence. I though I was being too oppressive and giving the harvest for a feast would calm them down or something. Boy, did my kid self found out a hard way. The futile struggle to scrap any remaining part of the city to halt the streak of party and celebration, outsider and new territory, all fell to the church's iron, undead grips. At least I accomplished every ending else already, so at least I can die with my fancy sunglasses on.

I blame these games for getting me into drone. The music used is from The Talking Book by Bill Gould (not Gourd!), and it is an extremely obscure album that probably doesn't even have a proper genre description (apocalyptic drone and field recordings is close enough). I have no idea where Northway found this music, maybe she's a big Faith No More fan or something, but to this day I jam out to it when I'm in an end-of-the-world mood.

I hate to say this but this game is more like a city builder then grand strategy, I say this since your trying to rebuild society by reclaiming territory, building new buildings, making sure that your popluation is happy or well fed and dealing with random events related to the zombies. Grand Strategy on the other hand is more a case of survival or domination where you try to outsmart your opponents, where you should build up your cities and what resources to use. While both can have complexity one stops at certain point while the other has a verity of possibilities because your dealing with activitly thinking opponents. Though overall it's pretty good video and I remember playing something like this when I was a kid, never got to far in it but still thought it was neat!

The end-game tactic of putting all your fighters into a single group and decimating anything is golden. In general, though you'd want your frontline to be made up of those large malls and in rebuild 3 have fighter squads cover six tiles preferably and seven on corners by using large buildings. Scavengers aren't exactly useless since you need to loot for equipment, at least in Rebuild 3, where you can get events that give you cars and other events that require you to fill in other stats for the scavenger group otherwise it fails and gets someone injured.

the dead frontier mmo still exists in two forms, the revamped 3d version and a fps style version. both are still given attention by the creator

Thanks for bringing attention to old flash games. I'm just going to guess you're WELL aware of Flashpoint by now.

God damn rebuild 2... The zombie cure scam, even as a kid I saw it for what it was, but the writing caused me to accept the cure when I wanted to decline it. I was so upset and I just, gave up right then and there. Never touched it again.

Rebuild. An old game, but a good game in all three versions. Not enough zombie games having you remake civilization rather than trying to survive the undead.

I recommend checking out They Are Billions. It’s a zombie rts game where there are billions of zombies. It’s pretty good, got some small issues, but it’s nice. It even has some Warhammer inspiration.

I played this a lot a long time ago. I never used the school for anything. I just made people do jobs until they became experts at it.

Rebuild is a great game! Especially the last one. If they could modernize it or 3d it they would rake in the money

I remember playing Dead Frontier. I remember the marketplace was flooded with low quality common goods being sold by players for like 500 trillion dollars.
