Excellent video, enabled me to repair my Neon Ray clock motor with ease. I didn't use shrink wrap as coil wire has a coating/insulator that is susceptible to heat. Loss of insulation on adjacent wires and the coil is toast.

At least the armature holding the coil wasn't riveted together. Nice neat repair. Heat shrink always does the job.

Hi True Texan: Thanks! - Fortunately most of the times the armatures are held together with screws. The heat shrink came out better than I had thought it would. It ended up nice and neat and held everything together well - Chris

I ALWAys add super glue to ends of tape.. That tape can loosen up under stress.. A little dab will do ya.. i would add some thin glue around the terminals to soak in and make it rock hard ..with some excellerent..

Different approach to rejuvenation of rotors. First wash down the gear and rotor with solvent, like isopropanol or naptha. That area of the rotor usually is full of dirt and crud and you are training to minimize contamination. I find that if you do several heating cooling cycles you can get oil into the rotor. I use a hair dryer to heat the rotor. 5 minutes on high usually gets the rotor too hot to handle bare handed. While hot place 3 or 4 drops of 0w-20 synthetic motor oil in the gear cup. As the rotor cools it usually sucks in the oil. If it does repeat the heat, oil cycle. Usually 4 to 5 cycles is enough. If the oil does not get sucked in try using Marvel Mystery Oil instead. It could dissolve the blockage and it is a lubricant.

Hi W Wagaman: I think I'll stick with the Toaster Oven method for heating the Rotor - It takes less attention than heating it with a hair-dryer. Others have mentioned using motor-oil - I'm not convinced that is the best choice - Chris

The synthetic motor oil idea is from a a fellow Telechron.net member that rebuilds the Telechron rotors as a business. I am convinced he is enlightened.

And every time you grab the rotor gear with a pliers I cringe. I will only try that as a last resort if the rotor does not suck in oil.

It really depends what sort of car oil you can use for clocks. Obviously, everything won't work, but there are a few that do such as Mobil's 0W-40 synthetic motor oil.

Hi Gregoia Productions: I'm not sure that 0W-40 motor oil would seep its way into the Telechron gear drive assembly or help thin out the old oil - so it doesn't thicken up again once everything has cooled down - Chris

I am in the process of fixing a 1937 GE electrical clock i have no experience in clocks but i am mechanically inclined i removed the workings and found the coil to be brittle and cooked FIRE HAZARD. I replaced the cord it too was questionable my question is can a coil be rebuilt also the numerals for specs eg volts amps etc on plate are hard to read but i have to look closer also i will refinish the mohogany wood body its sentimental to our family

Hi Cosimo: I think it would be very difficult to rewind the coil and have it electrically match the original coil. Looking for a used motor, would be the better choice - even if it's only to rob the coil from - Chris

Followed the heat advice worked fine but when I tried to turn the motor by hand something sounded like a tooth broke . It turned with the magnet but stopped when it to one point my fault entirely should've never tried to turn the motor by hand .

Hi Harold: Turning the Gear Drive by hand should not damage it (I often do this) If the "broken tooth" idea is based on a rattling sound you hear when your shake the Gear Drive - It's not a broken tooth - they all rattle some. I would recommend performing the Heating and adding 3-in-1 Oil to the Gear Drive again - I have had several Gear Drive that required more than 1 treatments - Chris
