My two cents, direct from the peanut gallery: don't install the oil pump with the original phillips screws, use any other type of fastener there. Eventually somebody will thank you
@WorkshopRebuild5 ай бұрын
@@qoph1988 I prefer the original oil pump cover with the countersunk bolts holes. The newer version (upgrade & /7 cover) was produced with step bores which is a cheaper process, and they are less accurate. There is talk about the phillips screws being weaker, but I haven't seen any fail so far.
@user-vf7gp1hr9c5 ай бұрын
I don't think he's worried about the weakness; it's that when Philips head gets corroded or old or stuck in holes, it is very likely for the head to strip 🤷

This engine was a mess when I got it. It looked completely different and you can see it here for yourself: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ6YY6ygbraZY7M The rebuild was rather quick, but all the work involved in getting the engine to this condition took many months of tracking down parts, dealing with flawed OEM replacement parts, reconditioning the aluminum housings, machining internal engine components etc. It's great when everything goes together like LEGO, but it all starts somewhere. Maybe you can find yourself a project that you're passionate about and assemble it a similar fashion. Thank you for sharing your comment and tuning in to watch! It's much appreciated. Regards Andreas

Well done, Andreas, I like your attention to detail, from, “what looks the vapor blasting of each piece”, and finished with what I am guessing is a Cerakote, to your “special” assembly tools, the initial assembly lubrication and temporary plugs, all these are signs of a good artisan. Given the age of the motor, I am amazed at the perfect condition of the thread on the aluminum head exhaust port. My 2c, as a firm believer in “copper slip grease”, I used to use that on the aluminum exhaust nut to aluminum head thread, as well as on the spark plug thread.
@WorkshopRebuild11 ай бұрын
Your comment means a lot to me and it also keeps me going! You mentioned every step from the preparation to the final result, which means you have been watching many videos. Thank you for your support!! The cylinder head threads were not reconditioned whatsoever, just cleaned and prepped for the coating. I was actually impressed by the condition, because many airhead owners have to build them up with weld and recut them! I fully agree with you about copper slip grease (copper coating). This should be applied to all fasteners along the exhaust system, including the exhaust nuts. I will be doing this once I install a brand new exhaust system to this bike. Have a fantastic day and I hope to see you in 2024. All the best - Regards Andreas

@WorkshopRebuild8 ай бұрын
thank you for your feedback! the piston rings were installed 120º apart from each other, but necessarily shown in detail in this video. I have a full engine rebuild video about this engine, which shows every step of the assembly. Fun fact: Piston rings rotate on pistons and within the cylinder bores. Even when installed 120º apart from each other there is no control over the ring gaps after that. It's very possible they line up after every now once the engine is running.

I completely forgot about these... They're pretty neat, just the process they went through making this and getting it just right makes me stip and just look at it for a minute.

I agree with you on that - they are really neat! I would have been amazing to see the work they did back in the factories, form casting to machining and to the assembly.

Beautiful job! At 9'40, I'm sure to see the blind plug in the oil canal between front and rear main bearing. If it is not here, you'll don't have oil pressure. 😉

Thank you very much! Don’t worry, the original flat-head oil plug screw has been replaced with a black oxide set screw. You can see it in place around minute 7:50! Thank you for your concerns😊👍🏼👍🏼 Regards Andreas

Weiter so.

Gruss Andreas

That is a beautiful piece of machinery! Great work on the rebuild, nice clean shop, stand, and tools. I would love to have a job like that. I have been a small engine mechanic for over 40 years, and I loved working on bike engines. I was recently forced into retirement due to health issues, but I still work on stuff on the side when I can. Thank you for a great video.

I have a 2003 airhead R1150 RT and I love it. It was a little getting used to after going with my V-Twin Harley that I came from. It's been very dependable and I've learned how to do all of the work myself well most of it anyway.

Double row timing chain with a master link is so vintage German style.
@WorkshopRebuild9 ай бұрын
The engine models from the late 60’s featured timing gears and just a few years after this engine, they went away from a double row timing chain and installed a single row timing chain. It’s always interesting to see how slight improvements were made over the years. Some which were better than others😉 Thank you for your comment! Regards Andreas

@@WorkshopRebuild Single row timing chain and black airfilterbox from MY82. Up to MY82 there has been a double row chain in all engines exept the R45/R65 and the round alu-cased airfilter. In the 1000cc with 24 holes in the box, that's the best sound ever. I ride a '79 R100RT...

Having put well over 100 000 kilometers on an Airhead I have to say I don’t miss its clunky hammer in an oil barrel shifting and the dry clutch death rattle. Still, there’s something about its simplicity and, once underway, the floating feel of perfect primary balance does keep a fella smiling . . .

It must be fun to build a new, clean engine on a table with a stand. I've only rebuilt mine (R1100GS) on my garage floor with 45,000 miles worth of grease, road tar, & dirt caked on.
@WorkshopRebuildАй бұрын
Well it is, but this engine didn't look like this when I got it! It was filthy when I took it apart haha. Somewhat similar to your R1100GS.

Took me back a long way. I never worked on that part of my R65. I put 200,000 miles on it and sold it. They say you can't wear a BMW out, but mine was wore down to the nub. But I took the engine for granted. Never had any problems but for the rocker arm assemblies wearing out. And I worked on it a lot. Clutch cables, brakes, forks, alternator problems, throttle gears, fairing mount welds cracking and those back sub frame welds cracking. Always cleaning those Bing carbs. But I guess they're one fine motorcycle all considered.
@WorkshopRebuild9 ай бұрын
It sounds like you had quite the journey with your R65! Putting 200,000 miles on a motorcycle is a testament to both the rider's dedication and the machine's durability. Despite the wear and tear you encountered, it's impressive that the engine remained steadfast. Your experience highlights the maintenance and care required to keep a motorcycle running smoothly over the years. It seems like you've had your fair share of adventures and challenges with it, but as you mentioned, BMWs are renowned for their resilience. Thank you for sharing your story! Regards Andreas
@carlyleporter53889 ай бұрын
To be truthful, the 200,000 miles is just a close estimate. The odometer stopped working at 31,000 or so miles. But I knew how many miles I had to buy a new rear tire, seems like it was close to 10,000 miles thoroughly worn out. I kept the old tires in a stack in the corner of my shed and when I finally sold the bike and hauled them off, it was close to a pickup load. The mufflers like to rot out on them too. Not inexpensive to operate. Seems like 45 mpg was about as good as I could get driving like grandma. The full fairing was probably responsible for the gas guzzling. In summer, feet get uncomfortably hot on long rides. If caught in the rain, the fairing would keep you dry with the right posture as long as you could keep moving. Boots would fill with water however. Hydroplaning would scare you into a coma. Once you get familiar with them, they're really simple to work on. But if you use one to commute, plan on working on it. Yourself. Unless you're rich. @@WorkshopRebuild

Thank you for your positive thoughts! A kit engine would be very cool, but to take one of these apart, many specialty tools are needed and therefore it‘s not very straightforward. If it were just some office art, that would be just fine and that‘s actually a cool idea. Maybe something I should look into😃 Let me know if you‘d be interested in that. Regards Andreas
