I just returned home with a Lyman 45 in two boxes. I put it together and looks like all is there. Mine looks like it is in good shape. This video was very interesting, thanks.

A friend was given one of the old Lyman 45 sizers and is in the process of cleaning it up, will the newer Lyman sizing dies work in the old sizer?

yes, they are the same.

Rebuilding one now. What thread did you cut on the new tube? Mine measures 1.244” major with a .85 metric pitch(!!??!!) real close to a 28 tpi could they have designed it with a interrupted fit??
@hillsgun
@hillsgun 4 жыл бұрын
kendog4570 It was cut to match the original thread but I don't remember the tpi it was not metric as these were built before we even knew what a metric thread was. I will try and remember to measure it when I get in the shop. Thanks Dan.

@@hillsgun Measured it six ways from Sunday and .85M fits like a glove. Nothing imperial comes close. I did not check the casting will do that tomorrow . FYI some old US military gun threads are based on old metric. Trapdoors, 1903 Springfields have some weird threads based on metric.

Mine was threaded on my Sheldon lathe which does not have metric capabilities and was cut to fit. You may possibly find some metric on the very early trap doors but it would be much more likely to find some metric deviation on guns that were contracted to be built by other manufacturers outside the US. Virtually everything I have encountered in my thirty years of gunsmithing that was built in that era in this country has been imperial such as Springfield barrels are 10 tpi

@@hillsgun I have been cranking on them for a good long while too. The M1903 25 tpi guard screws are what I am referring to. I was told that many early US muskets had some thread forms based in "old metric" whatever that is. Maybe it's from a Whitworth or BS form. The memory is the second thing that goes...cant remember the first! Anyway, I will measure the base casting quite possible the tube is mucked up, but the dang pitch gauge from .85 fits exactly. I have to fab a new tube and rework the main pressure screw from bubba's attentions in a past life. I have two of these 45's and they both have 4 thumb screws, two at the bottom of the rods and the one holding the top punch are typical, and the one at the threaded depth collar has a recess for a lead ball or leather biscuit to protect the threads. I recently found your channel and enjoy your content. Thanks.

Having problems with lyman 45... lube coming from only the bottom... not the side.. took the die out.. heated cleaned old wax.. still can't get the lube on the side walls bullet.. only comes from the bottom.. any suggestions ? nice video ty

Corey Carpenter sounds like you are not pushing the bullet far enough down into the die. The bullet needs to have the lube groves aligned with the ports in the die at the bottom of the handle stroke. Hope this helps
