Spent my summer months using one of these to get water at my grandparents cabin. (No power until lat 90s)It since has been replaced with an electric pump and pressure tank. I should pull that thing out and redo it. Thank you for sharing. You just inspired me to get on that this summer. :)

That one way flap should have the flat side of the weight on the hinge.

Quick story. I know nothing about pumps, but my well head is directly under my kitchen door. The elec. pump is in my basement so I have no worries there. An old timer gave me a deep well hand pump, and I thought what good will that be when the grid goes down. It looked ancient! Come to find out, it's in great shape, probably made in the late 1800's by F E Myers and Bros. company. I am thrilled! And I will make it ready just in case. That, and buy the necessary pipes etc. Thank you for showing me how to fix any issues. I do have a question though. I also have a pitcher pump I'd like to put next to my sink. Is it possible for me to draw water somehow off the main hand pump? Do I need a separate water source? I'm clueless. Love your accent too. I'm from the deep North, Upper Peninsula of Michigan, eh. So listening to you was a good hoot for me. Thanks so much. Indeed.

3:30 What is the CORRECT placement of the weight??? Some say it should be with the tab on weight should be facing the leather hinge, Which is the CORRECT way?? I must go through much trouble to do this and want it right the 1st time.... Thanks

Hinge side of the leather seal weight tab. In the fall, to empty the pump, fully lift your arm to press the weight tab, this drains the water from the pump to avoid freezing

Interesting, I just rebuilt my pump for the first time with new parts, hard to find here also in the Philippines but these larger manual pumps are everywhere, we got flooded and my pump was submerged for 3 months the insides were busted stripped (before the flood stripped) and rusted beyond all belief, I can't believe I got all new parts after visiting several hardware stores and I painted the outside, looks and works as brand new, sure wish I had one of those internal sanders, no such thing here. The external part of my pump and internal mechanisms were rusted but the inside walls were in very good shape, everyone kept wanting me to buy a new one but the new ones I found out after building mine were splitting at the weld seams so these old pumps are worth rebuilding.

The internal sander is called a cylinder honer. its used when someone rebuilds a automobile gas engine. try an autoparts store

Don't have any other way to sand the inside of a cylinder? I take a piece of rod 1\4 to 3/8 diameter and as long as you need, then saw a thin slot in one end...just long enough to fit a piece of sanding ribbon in it. Put the rod in a hand drill. Then take about a foot of the sanding ribbon and fold in half to mark the half way point then at the half way point fit it in the slot and wind it. Now stuck that down your hole and it will sand ....gotta make sure you wound it the right way though.

If you don’t have a cylinder home you can get a wire brush that fits on a drill that fits perfectly. Harbor Freight.

Any auto parts store will have it , a cylinder hone , I prefer to use a sandpaper flap disc .

None of these pumps are self-priming. Get a manual diaphragm pump instead. I found them while looking for pitcher pump info, and posted to warn others not to bother with pitcher pumps because they're junk by comparison! I wish I'd known this thirty years ago.

Online with some searching but these old junkers aren't worth fixing unless you hate yourself because they'll just corrode and fail again.
