Why apply teflon tape to the threads? those threads are not the seal, the rubber O ring and the vacuum breaker rubber form the seals on those units.
@TimsManBlog3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the excellent question David! Teflon tape is not used to help with sealing. It is used as a barrier between 2 different metals keeping them from corroding and/or fuzing themselves together. Long answer short: It will make it easier taking it apart for the next rebuild.

Don;t use channel locks use a form of smooth jaw wrench instead. You never want to us a compression type wrench.
@TimsManBlog3 жыл бұрын
Unless you do as I did, and place several layers of electrical tape on the teeth of your channel locks, effectively making it not only a "smooth jaw" wrench, but also adds a layer of shock absorbing padding. I did fail to mention that in the video, but this wasn't my first rodeo. Thanks for watching and the comment!

Till the shut off doesn't shut off or leaks
@TimsManBlog2 жыл бұрын
That's when a search of "How do I find my main water shut off?" or "How do I shut off the water to a whole building?" would come in handy. If the shut off leaks, it's still a doable job. Just shut it down as much as you can and deal with the trickle by knocking out the rebuild quickly utilizing a bucket and some rags. Most every one I do is like that. Occasionally I'll come across a shut-off that works 100%. Usually about 95% closure is typical. Just work fast.

I understand that I must turn off the water flow and I did turn the water off. After turning the water off and the toilet does not flush, it sounds like water is running inside of the pipes/flushometer pipes. I live in a co-op and my super told me it cost 116.00 for the flushometer and 75.00 for labor. I've fixed my own kitchen sink leaks and never had a problem. I feel I can fix my flushometer toilet with no problems too. I have the receipt and know where to go to get a kit but I want to make sure I do not need to ask the super to shut off the water from the basement. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First off Michelle, thanks for watching, and the great question! If you are absolutely sure the shut-off valve is in the completely closed position and you are still have water flow (even just a little), the shut-off valve itself could be faulty. In which case you will need to replace it....meaning having to shut of the main water supply. If it is just letting a small trickle by, you can still do the rebuild, but you'll need a bucket, lots of towels, and all your tools handy so you can do it QUICKLY, and God forbid anything go wrong while you have it apart....but I have done it in a pinch. The safest (and proper) way is to go ahead and replace the shut-off first.

spud wrench might be better. no need to teflone the threads. not sure why you did that?
@TimsManBlog9 жыл бұрын
A spud wrench is a great choice....but in my videos, I try to use more common household tools, to show anyone can do it with the basics. The Teflon tape is not necessary to prevent leaks, just to make it easier to take apart next time.....as I mentioned in the video.

channel locks as a tool on a chrome flush valve ?? He just scratched the heck out of an expensive part. Lack of care. there is an aluminum tool for that.
