Rebuilding a Solex Carburettor

Great video, I had my Stromberg Carb on my EH Holden rebuilt a couple of years ago, was not knowledgeable enough to do it myself, it works beautifully. Ultrasonic cleaners are good I have seen some repairers use them on tiny gunked up 70-year-old watch parts and they come out looking brand new. Thanks, keep up the informative comment Oliver.

Thanks Oliver, Are you able to tell me where you get your refurbish kits from. I usually use Burton but from their video it looks like you have to be spot on with your order as they only show one main gasket in their kit.

this video is wonderful Thank you! I have a 73 Mercedes w114 280 that I purchased from the original owner of 50 years! He had a set of handmade tools that he seemingly made just to adjust the carb (Solex 4a1). That said, the car has never seem right. It dies occasionally and has soft spots/gaps when accelerating. (even when doing so slowly) (definitely more pronounced on a full throttle). My mechanic is excellent but conservative and doesn't believe in scattering the carb unless totally necessary. This video leads me to believe it needs to be done.. and I am wondering your opinion. Thanks !

My '65 Corvair has two one barrel carbs. Somewhat simpler. Although they have automatic chokes. In the U.S. by the mid '70's carbs got nasty complex to meet the pollution regulations and when you were done, your car would still run poorly! Like the videos that you fix or make stuff.

The Dyane6 uses a a rod operated throttle and a single big spring being an 85 yours might be cable and a bit different I've never messed with one. My older car has a small spring on the choke side so that could be a thing it's hard to tell without looking

Have you dismantled the accelerator pump jet? Did you succed? It's a very tricky job, I think I'll quit and pass over. Cheers

Cheers Oliver! Would be great to see a video that talks about adjusting the mixture screw as well as setting the idle speed screw. I've been told from different sources that my RPMs should be around 800 but found that it was a little low for my car. Any suggestions? Thanks again!

The Haynes manual says something like take it to 1000 rpm then half a turn less but honestly cars with electronic ignition run smoother, the 602s can have a difficult idle when cold especially when not driven often and I adjust my 425 from summer to winter so with so many variables as long as it's happy it's happy in my book

Bought a 2cv 3 years ago as daily driver and 5 times have a new needle valve failed. The gaskets you use have i got some real bad experiences with, they become very fragile and is the absolutly worst when you have to fix the car on the go or tune the carburator. So yes if you use those always keep a spare in the trunk, but the cheap yellow ones can be removed regulary without breaking, thoe it ofcourse is recommenced to use a new one, once it's tuned proberly.

Sticking needle vales have always been a thing with Solex carbs unfortunately especially if they sit around

Hi Oliver, Enjoyed your video on Solex Carb. I have a Solex 30FV2 carburettor on a nuffield Universal ETD PM4 tractor circa 1959. Any ideas on where I might buy a full service rebuild kit for it??? I believe the Solex 30FV2 may have been fitted to Austin A152, Omnivan, Morris J2, JB Van AHG/D. The other reference number I can find is 30AHG.. I got a gasket set from OZZY but it's not the full kit, so the mechanic want touch it without a full rebuild kit.

A Citroen Traction Avant Specialist or club can probably point you in the right direction or as many solex carbs share parts for example the needle valve and spindle seals from this cars fit my 63 2cv which has a much smaller carb you may be able to get the bits you need from another kit and hand make any missing gaskets

Thank you Oliver, I've been having problems with my 2CV carb, Did a completer ECAS kit rebuild, But still can't get it to tick over. Not fully understanding how the Slow speed idle jet and the ` Idle mixture adjustment screw work together ? OR is the Slow speed idle jet not made to be turned after fitting it ?. I know this sound a silly question but even though I'm a competent spanner guy, I'm stumped. I've now had to remove the carb `again` because of the on goingproblem. I will now purchase a DK sonic cleaner after your video . Cheers

You are correct - the idle jet is not adjustable. You just put it in. You then have an idle mixture screw and an idle speed adjustment screw to play with.

So how does the sand get down the carb then through all the drillings and jets to get in to the closed fuel system?

I've found sediment in fuel from the pump before and I've found sediment in numerous carbs in the past including the one in jolene although never quite this bad. my best guess is that old fashioned fuel filters just went as good which is why larger filters had sediment traps like those found on boats

@@OliverPickard Dyane on a steel tank? stick a magnet on the "sand". Small paper filter in line makes a world of difference. cheapo couple of Euro ones are fine.

No need after I believe 1961 Citroen released numerous statements all in different years saying that the engines will lead free but the seat design never changed nordid it's material

Great video Oliver! Very thorough and informative. Just discovered your channel so will take a look at your other videos. I’ve a Renault super 5 1990 1.1, that I’m lead to believe has a single solex carb? I take it the rebuild would be fairly similar to this? Albeit single version. It doesn’t want to idle and dies when I don’t give it any throttle so matches what you were saying. Strange as it was running ok, but wasn’t drove for about 3/4 weeks. Thanks!

Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful. It should be broadly similar and if you take photos with your phone the whole way through then reassembly should be quite easy because you have tons of reference
