Hey guys when drilling fibreglass, specifically Gel coat, run the drill in reverse for a couple of seconds to start with. By doing this you'll prevent the gel coat chipping and always get a clean hole. Loving the progress.

Stu & Marina I just had a thought about your solar arch. With the considerable load on the whole structure from wind, solar panels and covering you will need strong backing plates underneath the fibreglass, probably the same size as the mount plates. I don't think washers would spread the load enough. Aluminuim would do the trick but probably you have already thought of this.

Nice work on the solar arch guys. The great thing about you being involved with the build like that is that you know how easily you can modify it as your needs change any time later down the track. And if you do learn to TIG welding yourselves you will forever be able to modify it and build your own SS projects as you please (liferaft frames, pushpit and pulpit seats, radar mount...) and it is a great and fun skill to have!! A decent TIG welder isn’t all that expensive and as you’d have seen by Mathias’s they can be quite compact to keep on the yacht.

Discovered your channel about 2 months ago…. Occasionally binge watched like 10 episodes…was such fun watching your progress like that… But now that I’m all caught up…it’s going to be like watching that snail on the solar arch…. I’m stuck waiting another week to see what’s up next… 😁. Keep up the great work! It’s fun to know I’m just one of 38K subscribers that are along for the journey that you’ll never get to meet but that admire and respect what your doing. Thank you for inviting us all to get to know Stu and Marina and the bringing back to life of the sailing vessel Seabird. A worthy endeavor! All the Best, Tommy from the other side of the pond…👍🏻🍻❤️😎

Are you going to have a weather proof Bimini under the panels ... Ideally you want roof sides with clears and Midge nets. No seeums... Or you will get bitten on land or on the coast... you know how bad that area gets. It will keep spray out and keep your cockpit dry at sea and warm in winter. The sun off in summer 🌞 if it ever arrives 🤷🏻🇬🇧🧙🏼‍♂️ Beautiful bird song btw. from the hedge. 👌🏻

When you get to installing the engine consider mounting the engine on unequal angle iron. By doing this you won't have to build up the engine beds. Bolting through the engine beds rather than down into the beds is much easier to align the engine fore and aft and in my opinium much safer in a roll-over.
@SailingSeabird
@SailingSeabird Ай бұрын
The old was mounted in this fashion. Our engine bed fits the motor perfectly. But when we get to that point, we'll have more of an understanding. Cheers for watching 🙂

That was a one cool adventure!!What a beautiful arche you designed and made together with Mattias. Quite a coïncidence: I drilled holes in our boat this week, same place in the cockpit as you did, not for a solar arche, but for the holders of the cockpit tent. Luckily there was an easy access in the cockpit locker to the bolts coming through. Good idea to fit a small cabins in, so you can store some sweets or savouries and still have access to the bolts. Enjoy your good work!

Mathias sure holds his torch in some funny positions, must be the artist in him. His TIG work is beautiful. Love the arch. Try to work out a way to stop the rain dripping down through the solar panels so it becomes a shade/bimini that can also shade you from the rain. Maybe a thin fiberglass panel underneath the solar panels so water sheds off.

The arch is solid and will last longer than the boat, but you should eventually create a canopy to attach to the top so you can be both rain proof and 'future' proof. Those solar panels will have to be replaced someday and it's unlikely you'll find exact replacements, so the mounting tabs will need major re-work. But, with a canopy, you can make up rails to bolt the panels to and just alter the rails when the new panels have a different mounting pattern. A canopy also gives you something to attach a dodger and side screens to for when nasty weather blows in... 😎
@SailingSeabird
@SailingSeabird Ай бұрын
We've thought about all these points. Roll down windows are my idea. Hopefully, by the time the panels need replacing, we can weld. Cheers for watching 🙂

Great job on the solar arch. I'm not a professional wielder but I have seen a lot of You Tube boat repairs and solar arch construction so that qualifies me as a person who will comment on something he knows nothing about. My Comment, do you think you should add a support arm from the vertical poles up to the top poles at the corners. with the increase weight of the solar panels and high winds the solar arch may move. You both are doing a professional repair

just a friendly bit of advice :) where you are anchoring the rails to the deck you need to have a plate on each leg so that the weight is distributed over the whole base not just on the bolts. there will be too much movement at the bolts and will crack or even may pull out. using an internal plate will make it more of a vice on each leg and be a thousand percent stronger . hope this helps!

Yes it will sandwich the rail on both sides of the deck improving the surface area of the fixture it will also help with any updraughting. Keep going with it all I love you’re commitment. I’m looking forward to you continuing your channel once you are seaworthy 👍😊

What a practical solar panel frame plus a sun/rain shade to boot! Will you have canvas sides and front/back/side opening windows, that would make it very practical and comfy in adverse weather conditions? Keep at it, great to see all the progress. SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.

That's the plan! That's exactly what I was thinking. It's a long way off, but the idea is there. Cheers for watching 🙂

Great video thanks for sharing. Mathias has very good skills fortunate he’s also your friend. You probably already have a plan but maybe consider using oversized aluminum of stainless plates underneath deck. Mounting holes will be stressed over time from boat motion and wind uplift.

Tbh I hate mixing metals. I know it's not always possible to avoid. Plus I don't have any aluminium, stainless will do. (I hope) I'll put a bigger backing plate on. But you're right, over time it will get stressed. Cheers for watching 🙂

With a rebuild the size you two are doing and out in the open ( As not in a nice well equipped workshop) You both are doing a bloody good job. And don’t forget Bin man has to check the bins every day for good stuff 🤣🤣🤣 That takes time 👍. Keep it up guys 👌👌👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I’m loving it 🤗

Chicos.... Mucho animo

I am jealous of your arch I got some Panels and 300 lithium. but need arch to get out of shadows. I maybe would like to ad outboard crane, and maybe some double supports for extra stiffness.

More good progress. Keep it up guys and that boat will be back on the waterv before you know it. Everyone is on about your snail but it sounds lkike you have a nightingale singing just behiond the boat. It was singing most of the way through your video. I would say that is lucky to have one so close.

I'm concerned what will happen in a 30knot wind. I understand you don't want to be in a metal cage but you could cut some fiberglass poles that you could rope in if you expected bad weather. If you don't reinforce it's going to get badly bent or blown away with your solar. Alternatively you could remove the solar when bad weather threatens; that might be the best approach.

These are concerns that we've thought of. Only time will tell. We have a few ideas to strengthen it up if needed. But let's see first. Step by step. On the last boat, I added extra diagonal poles. We have metal and a welder, we just need to practice first. Cheers for watching 🙂
