right in the feels, I lost my dad in 2021, can't believe it's been over a year, we worked on a lot together and were always close but looking back I wish I'd worked with him more and learnt more from him, lessons for all those who still can! Also lessons to pass onto your dads, I mentioned back in 2020 it'd be nice if he could write down some of the interesting things from his life he didn't talk much about, his childhood, school, things he got up to as a kid, places he remembered (we had a great trip down memory lane using google street view to his father's farther's family business) He finally started in his last week, he wanted to write about all the projects he'd done at the farm I grew up with pictures etc and did a good stint but was so tired, luckily in a way, he called for my help one day as he was struggling with editing the document, I drove round and showed him how and he finished that bit then went to lay down, he passed away within the hour while I was out finishing another project for him 💔

Hi Matt, I hope you manage to read this among all the thousands of responses. You really need to fill the oil pump with oil to prime it otherwise you could end up with a ruined set of bearings and hence a ruined engine. At the very least you need to turn the engine over with the starter with the plugs out to generate oil pressure. It doesn't need to be in the car to do this but without the pump being primed it's far from ideal. The other thing is, you need to remove the nyloc nuts you've fitted and replace them with plain nuts and new flat washers torqued to the correct spec and use a dab of removable Loctite. If you leave the nylocs on, the heat from the engine will probably melt the nylon and at the very least it will soften it to the point where the nuts will come loose. I know its reworking the build but its not optional.
@DanHomeAtLast Жыл бұрын
Would there be anything missing between the housing and the cogs? I wouldn't imaging the surfaces of a moving part and the housing would be mating like he has installed it.
@grahamb1 Жыл бұрын
@@DanHomeAtLast It looks to be assembled correctly. The tolerances need to be as close as possible to generate suction. Any gap between the impellers and the side plates will reduce efficiency. The shafts will keep them in place and the oil it's pumping will keep it lubricated.

Those are the original nuts that Lamborghini uses, they are not typical Nylock type, they are intended to run at high temperature. Whether they should be reused after a rebuild is debatable, I suppose. I agree with your comments about priming the pump with oil though.

Hey Mat, Two things with those Volvo throttle bodies: 1) the throttle position sensor tends to fail but can be replaced with a more modern hall sensor setup (there are a number of places that do that work, I used XemodeX in Canada to do mine) 2) you will definitely need to reprogram them for the specific Lamborghini engine spec so it matches with the ECU. On even on different Volvos those throttle bodies aren't interchangeable. You might be able to find a shop that can hopefully pull the program off of your original Lamborghini one (if it's not completely dead!) and transfer it to the Volvo ones. Best of luck with the continued rebuild!
@marekz9279 Жыл бұрын
yeah u r right, that is exactly what I wanted to add - Magneti Marelli TBs are so much pain in the neck in Volvos, spent hours on swapping them and learning how to code them to the car properly.
@t0m3k14 Жыл бұрын
+1 be careful with this thing, better to get them rebuilt before install
@thomascovenantwhitegoldwie113 Жыл бұрын
There are places in the UK that will fit the contactless magnet sensor, but given how easy and cheap it is, why bother? Agree coding may (not necessarily will) be required to the car. With Volvos, you had a 50/50 chance a scrap yard replacement would have the same code.

Just goes to show that this still goes on. Many, many moons ago we discovered the starter motor on a certain Rolls Royce was the same as the one as on a Ford Cortina. It was supposed to have been tested to an aviation spec but when we spoke to the manufacturers they said ALL the specs were to that standard even in the Cortina. Price difference in the late 70s was £38 versus £800+ These are expensive prices for labels!!! Keep researching Mat. You're doing a fine job.

I, as many have said, really enjoy watching your videos and seeing your Dad helping out as well. I grew up around Austin Healey's and old Jag's that my father was helping people fix/rebuild. We always seemed to have an engine sitting on a stand in our garage. He wasn't a mechanic either, he learned because of his passion for cars and bikes. When he passed a few years ago, I had to put his Harley back together (as he hd pulled it apart). I loved every minute of it. There's just something to love about learning by doing. My son is a lot like my father and wants to buy a project car. Maybe I will. All that said, if you need someone to turn that key for the first time, I would love to be there and to shake you and your Dad's hands. Well done Mat.

YOU JUST MADE ME CRY 😣 I understand you are learning but please any metal on metal components must be lubricated - you just put that oil pump together dry!! Generally you would even put a little light grease or vasaline on the pump gears before assembly so the pump quickly primes from dry and empty of oil. You had there all you needed to prime and test the pressure and scavenge side of the pump. Simply bolt it in with pickups then with the chain off introduce oil to the pickups & feed and spin the pump with a socket on the sprocket bolt - you won't need to spin it fast (just by hand) You will at least know it works and you have assembled the pressure relief correctly. Another tip is put a bead of sealer on a flat surface and press a piece of glass on it - you will soon understand how little and carefully you need to apply sealer without it all getting into the oil and blocking feeds and galleries 😉 Without experience everyone should at least know to keep everything meticulously clean and in the exact position parts were removed from also - I'll cut you some slack on that point as some real moron had previously been in that pump /Engine. Good luck with the rebuild anyway 👍

Hi Matt, little suggestion: polish-off the paint on the raised ‘Lamborghini’ lettering on the rocker covers. It’s a bit arty-pharty but i think it’ll be a nice finishing touch. It’s something I’ve done myself in the past when I’ve done covers on my own cars. I actually used to use a cotton wool bud to ‘paint’ Vaseline onto the parts I didn’t want the paint to stick, as the paint won’t cure over it. Then when they were dry you could just wipe off the paint from those areas. I use to use that VHT Wrinkle Plus paint which gives a great textured finish.

Couple of comments: 1. Use pressure activated sealant like permatex anaerobic gasket maker. Perhaps you are using it already. The reason for it is that it will seal between the aluminum parts (yes aluminum is the right way to say it, I know you are British) but it won't create hard blobs that will break away inside the pump. 2. Wrap the sealant bead on the inside of the bolt holes, you want to prevent the oil from seeping from inside the pump into the bolt holes. 3. The tolerance on the oil pump parts is insane. The wear may not be visible to your eye or felt with your fingertips, but the gaps due to wear may prevent the pump from creating enough pressure to force the oil into the bearings, or may cause cavitation inside the pump, that will send metal shards into the engine oil passages (there is a filter in the way, but don't risk it) Anyway, the way you assembled the pump, it will leak. And you won't see it, as it will be on the inside of the engine. Sure, at idle you should be fine, but I'll replace the pump as soon as you get a new one.

Amazing work Mat & team dad, I do a lot of work on engine aesthetics I really feel your cam covers would look amazing with the Lamborghini logo being a raw aluminium finish. This can be achieved by wrapping a 240 grit wet & dry sand paper around a sanding block or piece of timber, and slowing sanding the top raised section the the logo (without touching anything else). Once all paint is removed move to 600 grit wet& dry and repeat the process. I personally repeat again with the 600 but use it wet. Finally step up to 1000 grit wet & dry and repeat about for a uniform shine. You can step up to 1500 then 2000 grit but all depends on the finish you desire, the fine grit you step up to the more mirror like the surface will become. Hope this helps if it’s a decision you choose to make.

I love what you're doing and your wholesome attitude. Been binge watching your videos for hours now. But I gotta say, for me your dad is real MVP here. For whatever reason I always love it, when he enters the frame. Much love from Germany. Keep doing what you're doing. Best regards to you, and the rest of your family.

Hey Matt. I’m super worried about oil leaks I don’t think locktite will suffice on the front timing cover. Oil pump is not so important but that timing cover once fitted could be literally dripping wet. Fighters crossed it’s not tho. Also on the valve cover studs ensure to use correct compression washers and nuts to avoids leaks there too. Good luck

The manual states locktite 518 so thats what we used

I’ve been waiting for this for ages. Lamborghini kept you waiting forever for that pump. 👍🏴🇬🇧

Loving the footage Mat, can't believe out of all your viewers that none has not rebuilt an oil pump for this engine. Keep going.

Matt says it doesn't look damaged, while a part falls off the back is the heart of this series.

Been watching this build from the start. Really makes me miss wrenching with my dad. Can always learn so much from them. Embrace it while you got him around! ❤ it’s so crazy how a sticker adds thousands to the price of parts. Keep up the good work.

Hey Mat, I couldn't help but notice that you are using nylon locknuts on the Oil Pump to assemble it. I would suggest using Metal Locknuts with some high temperature threadlock as Nylon becomes soft at higher temperature, which will obviously be reached by this part as it is a oil pump.

I remember audi a4 had same rnse/satnav/radio as Lamborghini you just had to change the logo on the vagco m so when it powers up a Lamborghini logo starts up…im glad you mentioned what a shame a ripoff from Lamborghini selling the same part for a crazy amount of money

Big respect to you for taking this on. I don't know for sure, but did you prime the oil pump? fill it with oil? If not, crank the engine till you get oil pressure before you let it fire up. Wishing you all the good things.

Fantastic explanation of true TDC. As well as sourcing parts that are exactly the same on other family run cars. The ashtray savings was so funny.
