Installing tappets. Its works good to use something like a long stiff straw cut down the center. That way you can keep the string going straight into the next hole. Then you can simply remove the straw while pulling the tappet in place.

If you can find a small diameter tube the length of a pushrod you could slide it over the string and use it as a guide to get the "tappet installed" into the correct lower hole.

11:30 you could pull the string through a straw and pull it tight to guide it into the hole, and then pull out the straw. (For common rails)

Just did a bunch of work to my 12 valve. It's fun but nerve wracking wondering if you have done everything right. I went to turn it over with the starter to get oil pressure and it took quite a while I thought I did something wrong but it eventually got oil pressure.
@milesdavis51905 жыл бұрын
Get a short section of PVC or some thin wall tubing and stick it through the push-rod tunnel so when you drop the tappet puller rubber thingy it falls right into the correct hole.
@Dirtyol12valve5 жыл бұрын
I’d lock tite the oil pump bolts while you’re in there. And if you plan on seeing a lot of rpm locktite all the timing cover bolts as well.

When you're fishing the tappets back in slide the string through a drinking straw and it will help you guide them up through the block.
@kevinz7635 жыл бұрын
Next time try putting a level on the block and jack rear of the truck up so rubber plug goes straight down in tapper hole that way it'll make it somewhat easier to get the correct pushrod hole

Didn't you have a new timing gear case gasket on the last video for the 24v!? was waiting for you to pull everything and put it on, that would have been the time to do it, and clean up the timing gear case. I was thinking the same thing as Chris as well, you can drop all the tappets and just pull the trey with all 12 in it.

I'm confused... I think I'm looking at the same cam on hamiltoncam site but they say you need 0.025" piston protrusion and at least 0.038" valve face depth with standard gasket. Are you just oversizing the gasket? Maybe I missed something about that head you were using.
@dontworryaboutit15 жыл бұрын
If your head and block hasn't been resurfaced you should be good to go, those are the clearences necessary if you've had machining done so you know bare minimum to retain at least .040 piston to valve clearence

Saying the oil pumps don't fail do you mean the 24v ones and thats why you put a 24v pump in the 12v or just in general they last much longer then the milage you have.

They last a long time. My 96 12v has 460000miles on it with the original oil pump.

@burton12145 жыл бұрын
@@purepanorama8484 they are 1/2" dowels, i cut 10 of them at 14" and then 2 of them at like 12.5-13 because of #6 cylinder, there was interference between the engine and the cowl on my ford, dont know if youll have an issue on the dodges. the tube i used to catch the lifters i had scrap left over, but you can buy a 3ft tube from McMaster-Carr for like $20-30 if you have to, but im sure theres cheaper options out there. i found a rubber grommet thing from lowes to stick in the lifter and just used paracord for the string and used a magnet to retrieve lifters.
