Gosh I really wish I could ask Nonny questions about restaining my dining room table. I have never done it before but over my winter break( I work for the schools) I plan to try to refinish it. She does great work and seems to know exactly what she's doing.

I am not an authority on refinishing wood, but I will attempt to provide guidance on how we did ours. For the tabletop and cabinets, I sanded with a 150, medium grit, sandpaper. Always go with the grain of the wood as you sand off the old finish. Rub your hand across the tabletop or cabinets to determine if the top is completely smooth. Change to a finer grit (220) sandpaper and, by hand, go over the entire area applying only light pressure. The top should look and feel very smooth. Remove all the dust, and wipe down with a damp cloth, making sure to remove any dust in crevices. At this point, we wiped it down with mineral spirits. For the stain application, we used Minwax Wood Finish Penetrating Stain in English Chestnut. Follow the directions on the can label, using either a brush or cloth to apply it in the direction of the grain. Wipe excess down, wait to dry, and apply the second coat if a darker finished is preferred. Again, follow the step-by-step on the can. Don’t sand between coats. We used Minwax Water-based Polycrylic crystal clear satin for the topcoat. Absolutely all directions you will need are on the can. Apply with a good quality brush in the direction of the wood grain, and resist overworking it. After the first coat dried, we lightly used the very fine sandpaper, cleaned off dust again and applied the next coat. We used three coats. Best wishes.
