Oh man. You saved my ass in the end with that little rubber O-ring on the front yoke splines. When I took that off, I thought it was just RTV and I tossed it. A week later after reviewing this vid, I dug through the trash and luckily found it. Impacted the yoke off and replaced it. Didn't see that mentioned on any other vid. Thanks for the detail!

Yeah, I have been in the same boat. Sometimes I couldn't find the tool, it was late at night or I didn't have the money. I saw a rude comnent about it and thought it was pretty arrogant of him. You can't always have every fricking tool on earth at your ready. I thought you handled it very well and got the job done with what you had without damaging the housing. A perfect world if we had every special tool in our tool boxes.

Really easy way to pop that bearing is like you would pop a pilot bearing in the end if a crank. Pump bearing hole with grease then with a rod that matches the inner bearing tap it in. The grease will hydraulically push that bearing out like butter.

Jerry: If you want to remove the Needle bearing quickly from a blind hole, find a piece of shafting the same size as the inner part of the bearing. Fill the needle bearing with grease about half way. Make sure there is no air pockets in the grease. then lower the shafting down the inner part of the bearing and drive it with a hammer. This process hydralics the bearing out of the hole. Works good on pilot bearings for input shafts in the back of the crank too.
@BackCountryWrenching10 жыл бұрын
i tried too with the shaft and a rubber mallet but it wasn't enough force, and I wasn't going to hammer on the shaft with a hammer so i said fuck it and grinded it out

Best thing I've found for cleaning parts is mineral spirits in a pump spray bottle. I use it to clean and degrease parts before painting. You can paint parts after it dries. Great for plastic parts cleaning.

Nice seeing an in depth rebuild on a transfer case, the only experience I have with the inner s is replacing the chain alone on my old 85 F150. I would of liked to do the full rebuild but only had the chain available and being this was a plow truck, I was losing money while it was down so the quick fix was a must.

To remove that bearing, find or make a wooden shaft (one could use steel but you're dealing with an aluminum case) that will fit the I.D. of the bearing. fill the bearing half to 3/4 the way with any light oil, insert the wooden shaft , place a heavy rag around the whole area (so you don't get sprayed with oil) and hit the wooden shaft one time with a hammer. Observe if the bearing has begun to come out. if so,... repeat. The process is called "hydralicing" , a slang term. It will be important to make sure that the outer case surface opposite the bottom of the bearing bore is lying flat on a hard surface and the case is well supported all the way around. (one will have to cover or temporarily plug the oil access hole on the side of the bearing bore also) When one sees this technique work for the first time, it's quite amazing.
@joshestess2 жыл бұрын
It's alot easier and less messy to use bread in place of the oil. Just keep pushing more bread into the bearing and it will do the same and not spray you in the eyes. Do it for pilot bearings too

I do 4x4 transmission , differential and transfer case rebuilds at my shop . blind pullers don't work very well for pulling the lower out put shaft bearing , what works great is using 2 prong puller on a slide hammer with the puller legs ground down to fit under bearing , works great since when inserted and you screw slide hammer shaft into puller tightens good under bearing so don't slip out i lay the case with bearing facing down and one good slam comes rite out, would post a pick of puller modified but no place to post pic .

I work in some trans gel and use a blind hole puller and slide hammer. The trick is to work in the gel, then pop her out a bit and then actually whack it back in. Then pull your puller back in, get her started and then retighten the puller. That little bit of tapping back and forth will get the gel in there and voila! Just kidding, it's still a bitch. Lol

I think that hard to takeout roller bearing might be best removed with a sliding hammer. The bit that you would need is one that would grab the upper lip between rollers on opposite sides. May have to prefab your own if it is not readily available.

to get bearing out easily, find a shaft that will fit the I.D. of the bearing. wood, metal doesn't matter. fill the bearing bore with oil, place the shaft you obtained in the bore, wrap a rag around the whole works and hit the shaft with a hammer. you might have to do this a time or two, but it'll come out.

So the other day my 2003 jeep TJ with manual transmission while my son was taking off at red light felt like no power, said it felt like a flat tire or severe binding, He had towed home. I jacked up front end and tires rotated fine, but i noticed the drive shaft was not spinning. I grad the drive shaft and tried to spin it while the front tires were still lifted in the air. I couldn't move it. i got in the jeep and although it was in 2 wheel H i tried to shift transfer case to Neutral I couldn't move the shift lever. eventually moving the jeep while pulling on the lever it finally popped and now seems to shift in and out of 4 wheel drive ok. what would cause the transfer case to jam the front drive shaft if it was in 2 wheel drive and not being shifted at the time? my only thought is if the drive chain jammed. any insight would help . Thanks
