Wow, look really nice! It looks really good in white. I've did a test drive on a 1999 Transalp today, really loved it!

Very impressive rebuild project. Nicely done on the plastics/fiberglass and color scheme. Should be a very reliable mid-weight ADV tourer. Hope you post some more of the finished project.

Just watched this, reminded me of my biking days.. would’ve been good to see more of the stripdown (engine/g’box, etc), but very good effort. I think we’ve all made the mistakes at the start (bike falling over always happens when you’re on your own), but the brief still at the end with the finished project, the look on your face says it all 😁.. love 90’s bikes, job well done 👍🏻

Wow. Doing the same to my 650 alp with crf450 forks (I see I'll be needing spring) and Africa Twin swingarm with linkage in the back. I know exactly how complicated and time consuming your project was, so congratulations for getting through it. My sincere compliments on the results too and glad to hear it's better on the unpaved stuff, maybe it will be worth doing in the end for me too.

Absolutely wicked transalp build. Can i ask for details on the front end? (Yokes, Forks, Wheel, brake setup please)
@wjlacey6 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, currently rebuilding this into a scrambler-ish type bike. Crf 450 front end, that includes forks, yokes, wheel. (wheel not standard though, stainless spokes (heavy duty). Springs and oil were changed to suit the heavier weight bike in the forks. Large supermoto disk and caliper hanger. Got a digital speedo. Renthal fatbars. Brakes - braded cable from ebay, caliper original crf, master cylinder original transalp. To fit yokes you need a new stem made. bottom size to fit crf, top size to fit original transalp nut etc with a tophat style bush made to help it fit crf top.

Nice one cheers mate. Trying to find myself a XL600V. What mileage is yours on now? Did you ever consider doing KTM 950/990 adventure front end as guessing you wouldn't have to change the springs/oil due to weight of em? also what did it roughly set you back? cheers man!
@ukkwf77966 жыл бұрын
p.s. did you buy a taller rear shock?
@wjlacey6 жыл бұрын
I raised back shock by welding. Its as tough as the original and can be removed too. Check out the photos, its on there. If i had the money i would have put ktm parts on but i reckon its still probablly heavier and may need springs adjusting. For everything, it was about £2000 but thats was with new tyres, chain/ sprockets, rear lights, paint/ laquer etc, engine bars, front end. bars, bar raisers, disc etc

hey, I would like to know the type of front suspension that you have installed.
@wjlacey10 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexandre. The forks, yokes, wheel and front brake (complete system) are CRF250 2005. The steering stem wont fit the transalp so needs to be modified as you can see in the photographs. The springs and oil in the forks need to be changed to handle the much heavier TA. I got .54 springs (if i remember correctly) and dot 10 fork oil. I also got a 320mm big supermoto disk/ adapter for the better braking. The CRF disks are like mountain bike disks. Lastly, you need to buy a digital speedo unless you get the CRF x? which has speedo...
@wjlacey10 жыл бұрын
I also raised back shock 2cm (see photo's)

i realize this video is a bit old but hey maybe you will see my question? ;-) anyway great rebuild and I am about to embark on a similar journey although my 1991 Transalp is in even rougher shape lol May I ask what the forks are you are using on this build and the topend ? Thanks and greetings, Leo
@wjlacey4 жыл бұрын
crf450 front end, thats wheel and forks, caliper and a supermoto disc. to allow them to fit, i had a headstem machined to fit the bottom yoke and the top of the stem had to be the same spec as the ta's original size. This of course wouldnt fit the top crf450 yoke so we made a bush with a 'lip' on (kind of like a top hat) that went on top of it and slid into the yoke... sounds more complicated that it is but you need a very skilled machinist to do what you need... Also, someone whose able to press out (and back in) the stem as thats not something you could do yourself without special tools
@wjlacey4 жыл бұрын
the photo can be seen at 03:10 (the middle showing the original crf stem which is wider at both ends.. left is original ta and right is the new stem. it slides throught the top yoke, then bush (shown) slides on, and the locknut/ top nut goes on... it also therefore allows original bearings to be used.

the crf i used i think was 2004 (L)

Crf 450 with heavy duty springs and oil. Crf yolks with modified Bush to accept transalp size upper stem and headrace, supermoto brake disc and hangar and Crf wheel
@taylorious16937 жыл бұрын
What front USD forks did you use? Also; did you do other mods to the triple clamp to get to to fit?
@wjlacey6 жыл бұрын
CRF 450R with heavy duty springs fitted and oil changed. Yokes/ triple clamps were pressed into handmade stem. It fit CRF for bottom and a bush to fit top yoke.
@charlesmattina37876 жыл бұрын
Can you provide any more detail on the bush part? I assume you used the yokes and triple clamps from the crf450?
@wjlacey6 жыл бұрын
Yeah no problem. Had a stem made which fit crf bottom yoke and was pressed in. It then followed transalp spec for top which made it too small to fit CRF yoke. A bush was made and it looked very similar to a top hat bush. It fits crf with original TA spec so could keep nut and bearings in frame without too much trouble.
@kitperry7776 жыл бұрын
I am thinking of doing the same with some crf 250 forks. What stiffness of spring did you use?

It did mate, but the time was spent on saving up, buying and waiting for the delivery of parts, sourcing parts. I was also working 65hrs a week. Its no where near where i'd like it to be but its as good as i can do for the meantime. Thanks for the compliments by the way, the performance off road is incredible now, albeit a little top heavy.

Ebay. Crf450l I think. Second hand from ebay then paid for heavy duty springs and thicker oil to be added. Also had to adjust the stem of the yokes.. Look down the comments mate it's not something you can just buy you have to machine 2 parts to fit. A top hat Bush and the stem.
