We started pulling the engines on the free abandoned yacht and ran into a bunch of issues! Luckily while we were taking off the accessory parts we found what caused the engine knock. We reached out to our buddy over at ‪@WillFixThat‬ for some pointers on how to remove the engines, but he gave us some bad news...we need some special tools to remove the prop shaft and to fully remove the engines.

why water doesnt compress under pressure ... it's molecular shape .. its a 4 sided pyramid ... so locks into a firm structure this is why water ice expands and other ice shrinks . the easy way to remove the engines .... cut the back end off ... remove the engines ... fix em ... replace them reattach the back end ... but then I dont wok on boats lol

@@kaboom-zf2bl I understand ice water expands but someone explain to me why when you put ice into a glass then put water into the same glass the ice clumps all into one large cube? But when you put water into the glass first then the ice it doesn’t clump up.

Even if the manifolds are rusted on the non rod knock motor I’d still be sceptical on the water galleries in the heads and the block if it’s cast iron

@@WittyScrewdriver the engine cooling water is self contained. This is the exhaust only cooling, which uses raw water as it's a total loss system.

I have the same boat and did a complete refurbish and restoration over 7 years. Remove the radar arch 1st. 4-5 nuts on each side. Decouple, disconnect everything, and lift. You can lift it without removing the arch but back in is WAY easier to align with arch out of the way. I am a Cruisers Yacht Espirit expert. I have had the entire boat apart and back together. If you have a MEFI-2 computer on the old engines, I will purchase it from you. I could save you hours of fun….

The reason those manifolds are so corroded is from saltwater.they were never properly flushed regularly.the blue lettering on the engines indicates its for saltwater

Yeah, I was going to say that. I live on the gulf coast, and have made that mistake. I only did it on my 2nd boat (my 1st was an outboard), though, because it can be costly. Luckily, I only had to rebuild one engine.

The manifolds are fine. it's the cartridges inside them that are rotten. That's what he was pulling apart and crumbling. They are little radiators inside that manifold. they have the antifreeze from the engine circulating inside them. The outside water circulates around the cartridges to cool the antifreeze. It's two separate circulation systems that interact with each other in that unit. It's called a "heat exchanger" !

another way i remove the output hat coupler is to put a socket 5/8 inbetween and press out by sandwich the three or four bolts together and it will push shaft out a little bit of work but no press needed, you should only have to remove bolts and shaft will slide back but the hat needs to be removed to remove shaft . engine should pull without removing shaft but to refurbish shaft remove the hat before pulling moto rand trans or you will need the press

Thank goodness someone on KZbin finally used a actual lift strap instead of a ratchet strap. As a former safety director I’ve lost track of how many injuries I’ve investigated due to someone using a ratchet strap as a lifting strap. The warning and instruction labels on ratchet straps specifically say they aren’t to be used for lifting.

Those are called risers. They sit on the manifolds. Also those hoses are extremely expensive. The last manifold riser job I did took 24 hours it was so corroded. All bolts snapped in the head with a boat that the engines were inside the cabin. No room. Big headache.

A good trick to get radiator and heater hoses or any rubber hose off or on easily is to break it loose with a hose pick tool and shoot some brake cleaner under the hose and it will slide right off or on. Brake cleaner is like putting ky jelly on the hose. Nice part is it dries and leaves no residue. Just make sure it is still wet when removing or installing hose because once the brake cleaner dries the hose will stick again.

I worked on one of these some years back. It was a similiar yacht with two engines. Only one engine had to come out. Basically that shaft going into the teansmission is splined just like most driveshafts on cars/trucks going into their transmissions. We used two 2 ton bottle jacks on each side and that pulled the shaft out strraight. We rented a forklift to raise the engine out of the boat. Very simple.

Use the telehandler to pull the prop! No special tool, special telehandeler!

Rent the Telehandler after you get it ready to pull so you don't have to repeat over and over. A learning experience hopefully with no repeats

For anyone wondering, these are v-drives., that run a drive shaft down to the prop via a bevel gear set, the transmission sits forward of the engine, was a design to get the engines further back in the boat, maybe can make a better wake., not really sure why it’s used on this boat, a pair of bravos on the back would be more economical, and much easier to service.. although I don’t have a lot of experience with v-drives, maybe it’s a area of the country thing?? Seems rich has owned at least a couple in his area..

The exhaust did not "suck water". Marine exhaust are water cooled. Water is circulated around the exhaust manifold and then injected into the exhaust outlet hose.

I'm a retired heavy equipment operator and never heard the term Telehandler until I started watching youtube , we always just called them Forklifts , most trade halls use the term forklift also .

A 1 ton chain hoist chained close to the fork will give you plenty of room to pull the engine.

Great to see an update on the yacht. I can tell you one thing , the guys who designed the installation were never going to have to work on it. Just like the technical writers on aircraft maintance manuals. Two things they could have done. One was fit out drive assemblies, pull them off from outside and remove the engine. Two, fit the engines 180 degrees to the way they're fitted now and fit a 'V' drive gearbox and prop shaft. Very common system in the UK and still used. But you got Joe on the job with you, between you you will get them out. Now getting it all back together.......

Jayson please read the threads. The article on zinc anodes is dead on. The combination of abuse on both engines is apparent because of lack of flushing and anode replacements have destroyed both of those engines. I had a 2021 36 Beneteau Antares 11 "Sea Phever" with twin 300 mercury engines. The guy I sold it to never flushed it or replaced the zinc. It’s now for sale for about half of what I sold it to him.

A 90 degree pick ran once around those exhaust hoses between the exhaust riser and the hose and they pop right off! Lol those wet stacks can put water into the cylinders but it’s super rare and usually only happens when a marine engine diesels. Then they will hydrolock an engine!

I believe the props rotate away from each other at the top. This helps push the stern sideways when turning using one prop forward and the other reverse in a confined space or when docking.

Counter rotating props help keep the boat going straight forward. They also use counter rotating props on twin engine aircraft for similar reasons. As far as turning and/or reversing I can’t say.

I don't have a plane, but I have a boat. I have bought a lot of tools and spent a lot of time working on it. It sucks. At least you can get in there with the engines, I have to do a handstand under the rear seat in a tight place to do anything. It gives me a real appreciation for how tough the boat mechanics are! I fix cars for a living, I would HATE being a boat mechanic! Drinking a cold one while watching the sun go down on the water makes it all worth it somehow. Good luck guys! I have never worked on anything in my life that was more of a PITA than a boat engine. I believe the proper removal procedure is to wrap a chain around the engine, raise it up about 15 feet and shake it until the boat falls off.

I do t know much about boat engines but I know lots about the trailers they sit on, one piece of advice I highly recommend to keep the bearings on the trailer running smoothly is to not install bearing buddies/trailer buddies they leak lots of water, since I started working at a trailer repair shop I have not seen a single trailer with buddies on that has not had damage to its bearings, also the two piece dust caps are just as bad only put fully enclosed dust caps on

Love your videos Jason, very interesting. One point, have you had someone inspect the interior hull on this thing? The Car Wizard bought his first yacht pretty cheap a couple years ago, rebuilt one engine, replaced the outdrives, did a lot of other work and then found deep in the bilge the hull was rotten and not repairable even though it looked great on the outside. He wound up selling it for parts.

The outdrives have to come off first . We had a 2004 four winns with a Volvo penta 8.0 gxi engine . Basically a big block Chevy engine. But we had to take the old out drive out and clear the shaft . Once all electrical and hoses where disconnected it came straight out .

The engine size isn't the feature that limits speed. The hull design is the key to speed. However, if the engine is too small, it will affect speed. But you can't increase the engine size to increase its speed. The boat manufacturer matches the engine to the hull for optimal speed.

And the prop size and pitch has a large affect on speed and acceleration. Replaced the props on one boat and couldn't get the same ones one option dropped about 3 knots off cruise the other killed acceleration

Sorry but thats not really true. Maybe you are thinking of displacement type hulls? Which this isnt. V-form Planing hulls are reasonably similar and wont differ much in speed with same power. Its the boat weight in itself thats most important, i.e good old power to weight. The manufacturer chooses engines for being the chepeast ones that fits the performance targets and other considerations of the boat. A "larger", i.e more powerful engine with proper power transfer will make this kind of boat faster, always.

@@benmac940 Depends heavily on the boat actually. The water resistance itself certainly does, but a planing hull will if designed correctly have less and less "wetted area" as speed increases. That means that for some boats of certain weights, the fuel consumption for a given distanse might not even increase linearly, but even stay the same or theoretically decrease. My own boat is such an example, its a 25 footer with about 5000lbs displacement and gives about the same fuel economy from planing speed of 25mph all the way to top speed of 40mph, believe it or not. Pretty counter intuitive to most people. I think this boat is a bit too heavy to enjoy the same thing, but it will surely not increase as much as pure same drag area hydrodynamics might suggest. I have twin 454s in my big boy and it was an ocean boat saltwater it did the exact same thing the risers were rotted out and I had to replace one block. Freshwater does not do that it's a saltwater issue risers are not cheap and some of them are very hard to find I'm still looking
