Glad to see you got a french press, they make the BEST coffee, and it doesn't take much longer than instant. Most instant coffees are crap. But we DID find ONE good one, it's called Don Pedro's. My husband got a sample of it when we ordered something else, and we've been buying it ever since. We prefer fresh brewed, but it's great for adding coffee flavor to things you don't want to water down. I ALSO add it to my hot cocoa when I make it with milk instead of water.

Yeah, the mic sucks. But you'll never know unless you try it out. You've done a big service to those that may be in the market for a mic. One thought on the structure. The sides don't fully reach the ground and allows colder air in. Perhaps using slightly larger tarps and secure their edges to the ground with rocks/soil/stakes? Those heater/stoves are pretty damn nice

Love the video. On the Rode Wireless GO II mics - I'm a videographer by trade and that's one of the systems I use. This particular unit has its goods and its bads. A couple of quick suggestions. A mic like that needs to be mounted right about over your heart to be effective. You also may need to up your gain on the transmitter unit a few notches as well. If you're looking to eliminate all the background sounds then use the little lavalier mics that came with the units. Those can be clipped on your shirt collar, your outter blouse or jacket, or even hidden in a ball cap if the brim is facing forward. Make sure to use the little foam windscreens if you're outdoors. You'll be surprised at how much wind those will cut out. Also - same rule applies for the lav mics for distance. Ideal placement is somewhere about heart level. Orientation upwards isn't critical. Those are what's known as omni (or omnidirectional) mics - meaning they pick up audio from all directions. When mounted on your shirt or collar, your body blocks any noise coming from behind you. The mics also have what's known as a close pattern - meaning they're designed to pick up only sounds from about 3 or 4 feet from them. Now for the bads. Not sure what you're filming on these days but there is a design flaw in the receiver of the Rode Wireless Go II system. If you're using a Sony or Panasonic camera and mount the receiver in the hot shoe of the camera, you'll get a buzzing sound in the audio. There's a fix for that I'll be happy to share with you as well but I don't want to get too long-winded in this post. I've been following you for a long time and your camera skills have definitely improved a ton...not that I would expect any different from a highly motivate Marine. I'd be honored to talk with you about anything above or any other video related things. Please feel free to DM me or connect me through my KZbin channel. Not much to see there...it's really just for fun. Anyway - keep doing what you're doing. I spend my share of time in the woods and always learn something from each of your videos, and would be honored to return some of my knowledge as a thank you for that.

Really really really into your videos! I have relocated from NZ to Shanghai for a couple of years, and watching your adventures makes up for not being able to do it myself in NZ - but I will be back! impressed by your building / construction skills and I love your creativity! I know some of the haters go on about "he's using the same knots" etc but I personally love that - the practical application of basic skills through repetition is what will make the difference in an emergency situation. I have watched almost all of your videos and many many of them several times. Keep up the good work Shawn and thank you! On the mic topic - I think the Rode Wireless Go is a great choice and will serve you well. Unfortunately...and I have done this myself...I don't think the receiver input into the camera was in properly - the audio we were hearing was from the camera mic. When the 3.5mm input lead is inserted correctly it disables the internal mic, which is why I think the issue was just the input not in properly. I have used the Rode mic for years and I know for sure the audio in the video was not coming from that. Just my thoughts. Cheers mate!!

Dude, we made a gazebo/ sitting area in our yard with one of those Ozark trail canopies. Did the exact same thing with the tarps. We left one wall open though. Just know the canopy cover it comes with isn't to durable. The tarps will out last the cover. Ours got destroyed over one summer, the wind and debris hitting it tore it to shreds. All but that, it's a great idea for a shelter. Next time I'd rain fly the top with a more durable fabric if it's gonna be a long haul with snow or heavy rain.

Where we are, in the Okanagan, near Big White ski resort, We just get too much snow for this model. Sometimes, overnight. We've learned the hard way, that we definitely need to either, Pack away the light duty canopies, Or, Select a configuration that sheds the snow, rather than bears it, Or, Is simply much stronger to handle the snow load.

To get more room to stretch out, maybe consider adjusting the tarps a bit to splay the base out to larger than 4x6. That would require more tent stakes but shouldn't be a big deal. Enjoyed the little moment of Zen at the end with the turtle.

Love the video though, and I was considering watching the hobo hot tent video, Perhaps combining the simplicity here, for an inner layer, with a snow and sun shedding exterior layer. I've seen many of your more robust shelters that would effectively bear or deflect the heavy snows, sufficiently to allow this type of light duty canopy, to do its job, keeping us dry underneath.

RODE does make good gear. I have that mic you have. It works great but you really should add the lapel mic too that for best results. Also they are best worn (without lapel mic) closer to the point of sound. Also as with any mic setup, you will need to add a dead cat type wind blocker. Even the most expensive and best mic in the world will sound like crap if you leave it naked to the wind. Also the RODE mic receiver has a gain button on there, you could use that to help boost your voice when the mic is worn so low, (would require a little bit of post sound to remove the higher frequency bugs etc though but not difficult to do in something like Premier Pro).

great video - as others have said, the volume level of the new mic is really low. can turn you up but then get blasted from the 'regular' volume of the vendor-rolls. definitely like the idea you demonstrated and I agree - looks like something that would have a place on the market. you could even have it as a single 20ftx10ft tarp that the excess folded under as a floor type thing, creating almost a box.
