When you start seeing things for what they can be instead of what they are, you have begun to master the art of improvising. Spoon = concave surface, not just an eating utensil. Boom.

A significant chunk of my front yard is mugwort. It is exactly as you said: sun-loving, water-loving, and here in CT, very invasive but outstanding tinder.
@KahlestEnoch7 жыл бұрын
Yes dried mugwort is kinda odd, it looks almost like it is covered in cobwebs with all the fibers but burns well, and if you throw some occasionally on your fire you don''t need to worry about bugs. Great info thanks

In the winter you can use ice and icicles in the same manner as the water in a bottle, you can also with grass make a small loop drop of water dew into it and use as a solar ignitor. I also use chared plant matter ie punk wood for you can always make more in the woods and never run out instead of relying on cotton

Excellent informative techniques Marine! Kudos! Call me mesmerized... I caught myself leaning into the screen and trying to blow into the char cloth & bundles to aid in ignition. Ha! Godspeed the patriots.

I'm going to add a small magnifying glass to my carry everywhere kit. Makes perfect sense as you've explained it. And your demo on mug wart was really helpful, especially with the close up shot that showed the detail. It'll be hard to get it wrong. By the way, this is why I like your channel . . . you make sure you explain things in detail and do close up shots where detail is necessary. There are a lot of KZbinrs out there that don't get that. Thanks. It's appreciated.

Hi Corporal, thanks for all your informative and no-nonsense videos! I was wondering whether it would make any sense trying to save a coal from a fire, covered with moss or something, in an animal horn, till next fire somewhere else? How long could an ignited coal live that way? Greetings from Sweden!

You are correct, Mugwort is a native species, not an invasive species. The local Native American's had many uses for the plant. See the book "Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West" by Dr. James Adams. Of course the dried leaves as an ember extender is a given.

I found a small fresnel lens does a great job at fire starting. They sell some that are credit card sized lightweight and you can carry one stuck between a couple of credit cards. I also carry one of those credit card knives. Not the best knife in the world but at least its a knife. There are also some phone screen magnifiers. They are slightly larger but just messing around I managed to make a piece of rubber smoke in about a second in direct sunlight. Thanks for all the other tips.

Great video! I suppose the foil could be used on the bottom of a pop can? I keep a credit card sized Fresnel (Frey-nell) lens in my wallet but haven't tried it yet. The only downside was the outro music, which was very loud. But no biggee.

Can you do the glasses or mirror without the char cloth and pinpoint it directly on your Mugwart or other dry fibrous mass? Or is the char cloth a critical must-have step in the process?
@SK-qc6fb3 жыл бұрын
Charcloth must be what the Coleman Lantern mantles are? Or something similar, because it seems more silky than cotton.

If you are myopic..a magnifying lens,held several inches away from your eyes,will bring the field of view into focus....bad part is the image is inverted... but without glasses you are blind... better than nothing...
