The US military stopped including Tabasco bottles in MREs in 2011 for plastic packets to reduce weight and cost. In 2019, the military switched back to glass bottles after the company that produced the packets stopped making them. In February 2022, the military also approved "powdered Tabasco" for next generation MREs because it's lighter and cheaper.

Old Corps here. Served from 65 thru 69. Marine field gear,782, was horrible. Crap left over from the Korean War and back packs from WW2. C-Rats were in cans which only added to the weight you were humping. I did my tour in Nam, I was a Marine Scout Dog Handler, serving in the First MarDiv. The supply system had completely broken in the field. Never enough socks, jungle fatigues or food. Absolutely disgraceful logistical failure. I was lucky. My first dog, Fritz, was wounded and I and my dog was flown down to Saigon to the Army War dog hospital for 4 weeks for surgery and rehab. Met a bunch of Army Handlers. They outfitted me with army gear from head to toe. I was in heaven. When I flew back to DaNang and reported back our compound I was the envy of my unit. In closing, I found it absolutely tragic how the Marine Corp let down it’s young Marines regarding gear and logistics failures. If your asking a young man to daily put his life on the line, you should have the decency to take care of him in the field. No excuses! Discharged in June of 69 after four years. Went to college, earned two degrees and got on with my life. Had a great business career and retired in 2013. Met some great guys in the Marines, unforgettable adventures with memories that last a lifetime. Semper Fi.

Excellent installment. I was in a medical company, so I didn't use my shelter half much at all. It received the most use when I was in BT. We laid out the shelter half, put the pad down on one side, took the blanket and covered the whole square section of the canvas, folded the ends in, folded the one half over the other, and rolled it up. We attached it to the bottom of the ALICE pack through the bottom straps. One memorable night had us getting to our bivouac site after going for about 20 hours nonstop. I took my bedroll out, opened it up all the way, laid on the pad side, pullet the blanket/canvas side over me and went to sleep. I was totally covered but I'm still glad it didn't rain that night lol. It felt like I was immediately shaken awake by my platoon sergeant, but six hours had passed. I was grateful for the extra rest. I very much enjoy your videos and the blast of nostalgia I get from them. I'm sorta scared to look at your Etsy store bc I already have enough gear, and may be tempted to buy more lol (I'll still check it out).

We had it up 24/7 for several years without any deterioration... until my oldest brother confiscated it and took it to his house. I never saw it again after that. My favorite MRE was the beef stew w Tabasco sauce, 2nd was the pork Pattie with crackers - cheese- and Tabasco sauce, 3rd was spaghetti with Tabasco sauce, and the rest were choked down or traded. Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE except me threw away the fruitcake, and when they found out I actually liked them I ended up with an MRE box full of fruitcakes. Can’t help you with when they stopped putting the Tabasco sauce in, your time was after mine. Looks like the cuisine changed slightly as well. I also liked the freeze dried coffee packs as well. My shelter half’s aren’t in near as good of shape as yours are, but they still do the job. Wishing I could find the real deal poncho liners, need 2 of them. Awesome video Corporal. Thanks

Good vid man. When I compare the shelters you guys had with the poncho shelters we had in the British Army, it might be cosier but it looks like a lot of gear to set up. With some practice, we could be under cover within 90 seconds or less: Poncho, 2 bungees & I used to keep 6 pegs in my roll. Always had 550 on the corner loops anyway, so wound the peg, into the ground, fast & easy. Brit Compo Rations were tinned back then. Heavy but tasty though. Much better that the flat pack meals of today but weight was an issue for sure. So we used to carry our own add-ons as you probably did too. I'd still prefer the poncho/tarp approach to the 2 Man Shelter myself but then again, these days & prefer a hammock to a tent. LOL Semper Fi from a Limey & keep your chin up feller 👍

But pretty much all that gear you sported in ‘97 was my issue in 2003. We had the MTV, not the flak vest though. We also had the M16 A1’s that were fully automatic vs your A2 with the 3 round burst. Mostly because we did not have machine guns at the squad level. We only had them in static defensive positions or vehicle mounted (240b, M2, MK19). Good video!

Cool review. I would, though, consider telling folks about near ambush vs far ambush thoughts. Near ambush you HAVE TO RUSH the threat. We've seen the horrific sense like from New Zealand church shutting were a ton of folks were killed bunched together in one side of the hall. Scenes like that happen so so many times now a days. In NZ, one person rushed the gunmen and almost made it. Imagine if everyone did that. The lost of life would have been much much less. Yes, every instinct will tell you to not do that. But for near ambushes, its your only chance. Semper Fi

The hypocrisy and double standards are ridiculous.

Thank you so much for posting this, it brought back so many memories. As for when Tabasco sauce was still in MRE’s. The last I saw of them was in August of 2000. I used to love to put that in the Mexican rice. I was not a Chilli Mac kind of guy. My favorite MRE was the chicken and salsa. I actually liked the veggie crackers and forgot all about the jalapenos and cheese spread. I put it on the crackers, I remember most of my MRE’s had either skittles, or short bread cookies for candy. The pound cake was decent too and that is another item I forgot about.

In 4 years of being in the 25th ID we used our tent shelter halves once simply we never use tents at all what you used is your poncho draped over you and maybe your Polly pad to keep you off the ground many times it rained out so much we use the Alice pack with everything sealed in it waterproofed as a way to get off the ground and then leaning your M16 A2 on the bridge of your Kevlar creating a own little mini tent with your poncho and that's how we slept

What did you do for insect protection? I’d be skinned alive even with DEET in my neck of the woods with that setup. Excellent vid.

I had a 1970 AMC Javelin. It had a body rattle that drove me crazy. Fixing the back passenger side window regulator, I found an old folding military shovel in the side panel, the body rattle. The Javelin is long gone, the shovel I still have.

Brother, we were using the same gear you have on, in the army in Germany in 1985-86. Although in 1983-84 at Fort Polk, LA, we had the old two piece steel pots instead of the kevlars. Great nostalgia trip 🫡
