As I continue work on the next major RECAPitation project, please enjoy the telling of a story most have not heard. It's nice to recap a visual novel not about a death game for once, though this one is a fan translation since the actual game did not release here. Even though this is not essential to the story of Chrono Trigger, it would be a shame to post that without its follow up companion tale (even though the director hates it). Chrono Cross makes this redundant, of course, but it's like seeing an early tech demo of a game long before it came out. Enjoy and I'll see you on the next battlefield. Remembered playing this game and later playing Chrono Cross its gave me the chills when I see that Chrono Cross Starts by opening the same book as Radical Dreamers.

Hearing the original rendition of Gale on the Super Famicom was wild since it's so close to what it became on PS1 in CC. I also really loved the Final Confrontation track and wish it made a CC appearance as well. Though, I am ok with it being an original gem exclusive to RD

I love this game. I really do. It is a success story of the potential that visual novels have, despite the overall execution (And the fact that it never came here until fans helped it along). I had no idea this game had additional endings (Ridiculous as they are), and I may have to revisit this old piece or perhaps KZbin them. In many ways, I find this particular game's plot more compelling than Chrono Cross, proving that less *can* be more. I also prefer Kid's development as a person in this game than in Cross. Thank you for this RECAPitation, and I'll rendezvous with you on the next battlefield.

i never knew about the endings either. I downloaded a ROM like 20 years ago to try it out and quickly got bored/frustrated with it. I tried it again later and actually completed it, but I only did it that one time.

Radical Dreamers is the name of a supposed band of thieves roaming the archipelago. You can also find excerpts from this game in Chronopolis. I can't say exactly where, but I remember it being in a room with a bunch of computer screens and some info about FATE and alternate universes.

kept in a kingdom to the north for centuries, eh? Is Radical Dreamers supposed to take place in the El Nido Archipelago? Where exactly even IS El Nido in relation to the other continents? What the hell actually even is the frozen flame? I've heard people speculate it's a piece of Lavos's shell, and the same thing as dreamstone... but that can't possibly be, you get dreamstone from Ayla before Lavos falls.

this is kinda of a prologue/test/demo to Chrono Cross, and if i'm not mistaken just became known as part of the franchise after the release of Chrono Cross so take this as a test and introduction to a parallel universes...

One hell of a post a shame what happened to cross and it's storyline but the mean spirited and off screen death of the trigger cast just didn't resonate with people me included and cause of this the Chrono series ended

people actually expect their heroes to live forever? also when serge and co defeat the dream devourer/time devourer all of that is reversed.. none of it has happened. there is only 1 universe. schala/kid/harle are again one being.. and crono/marle/lucca are alive the three died because it wasn't their story.... they'd done what they were ment to.. it was caspar's futzing with time that caused the whole thing that forced serge to have to act.. though it did end with schala being saved finally

@@Spekor theres a difference between dying of old age, and being beaten in your prime (in which you fought toe to toe with a Planet Destroying reality warper and won) by Dalton, a shit knight who is barely scrub tier, and would lose to any of the mini bosses faced nearly 5 years prior. Luca survived this, but The Kingdom still fell and Crono and Marles fates are unknown in the original timeline, except that they had a kid within 5 years

I agree with you. To find out that Lucca, Marle, and Chrono all died off screen and later in Chrono Cross have the Prometheus circuit (Robo) get erased from history is just horrible. They may as well have just let Lavos devour the planet

I think I might've enjoyed Chrono Cross a bit more if I had known this backstory before playing it, as it would've helped to ground some of the events in the game. That said, I still think that Chrono Cross's plot is an unsalvageable mess.

I love this game, and I hold a lot of resentment toward SquareSoft for royally forking over Chrono Cross as a remake/sequel. Instead of a real retelling, they slaughter magils character because they felt it too difficult to implement and made a bunch of random characters instead. Plus the whole Dalton somehow murdering the trio that helped destroy a space parasite. Ugh.

Messed up Magel? But he was one of the coolest characters in that game and according to guides the strongest character out of the 3 branching paths. I think they respected the character but for whatever reason left his backstory ambiguous.

@@annebright3852 in Radical Dreamers, Magil is Janus, watching over Schala. In Chrono Cross, they completely removed that backstory because it was "too difficult to implement", and as Magil became Guile, the character lost his identity and became just another number in the roster. All the references to Janus in CC (such as the letter to Kid from Lucca become pretty much only Easter eggs, until the Chrono Trigger DS remake when they added that one random ending where Magus wanders off in the forest with amnesia after confronting Schala in the Dream Devourer... My problem isn't RD, it's CC.

@@luciferfaust Well that's kind of what I mean. In Chrono Cross they left the implications there and chose to keep it ambiguous. I didn't play Trigger before Cross but my brother explained the connection to me when I read that note (I think in Viper Manor?). It's been a while since I played through it so my memory is hazy about what the note said. I think the character was still awesome though like his ability to make his wand disappear and reappear from inside an enemy, that's awesome! My main team was Serge, Kid and Guile until I had to switch them... er for spoilery reasons but I remember reuniting with him towards the later half felt great. Like seeing an old friend again.

Radical Dreamers seems to be the DNA for Chrono Cross, so it seems that the fall of the main heroes of Chrono Trigger is considered as canon and was a very early plot point that Kato wanted to include in future entries.
