Those are konnyaku potatoes. They are a type of yam, but they have no other use than konnyaku!

A double-layer flue will prevent the condensation of wood-gas products on the inside of your chimney. Better yet, buy/build a stove with a baffle. It creates a secondary burn chamber where gasses from the breakdown of the wood are used up before they are lost up the flue. EVEN BETTER, build a masonry type furnace. It incorporates a small controlled burn chamber with a grate (to burn coals quickly) and a long convoluted exhaust that captures all the heat. Some versions have a metal section of flue leading into a masonry flue. The idea is a super-hot stoichiometrically 1:1 burn, maybe 20-30 min long, and the structure of the stove captures all the heat. They're common in northern Europe---Sweeden and other cold places.
