"We Need to Talk About Kevin" is also about the mother's mental health during and after her pregnancy. She has some degree of pre & postpartum depression which causes her to hate the experience of pregnancy/birth and keeps her from bonding with her infant son. I say this as a mother who experienced postpartum depression after a very difficult pregnancy and birth. He is 18 now and I still have guilt about those first few months after he was born. I took care of his physical needs but remained emotionless for fully three months after birth. The unplanned pregnancy of my daughter, when he was three months old, is what rebooted my hormones and snapped me out of the depressive hell that imprisoned me. Thank god the second pregnancy was easy and there was no postpartum depression, even though it was a traumatic birth.

I consider myself a horror buff, and unfortunately, it takes a lot to disturb me. When I first watched Hereditary, I had to shut it off right after the Charlie scene. Alex Wolff's performance in the immediate aftermath is what made the scene disturbing to my core. I had to shut it off right when he pulled up to the house. I wasn't sure I'd be able to finish it. I ended up continuing it 2 evenings later. Because of how incredibly disturbing the entire film is, and because of the amazing acting, especially by Toni Collette, I consider it the best horror movie of all time. In fact, I don't know how it can be topped, even by Ari Aster himself. Midsommar is disturbing as well, but nowhere near the level of Hereditary.

Damn. Glad "Enter the Void" was on here... That movie messed with my head so thoroughly. I watched it back when I still smoked weed - by myself, in the dark, on the Fourth of July several years ago. The curtains on the door and the windows were lighting up from fireworks outside. I've watched a lot of weird movies - movies like this are my favorite. But for whatever reason, that movie really messed with me and stuck in my head - whether it was drugs, my environment at the time, my state of mind or whatever... There have been other movies that have pulled me in like that but, off the top of my head, the only other ones I can think of are "Altered States" and "Eraserhead" - also, Salvador Dali's "The Andalusian Dog" - that has to be the weirdest movie ever made. Those are all kind of like if you could record my nightmares and make them into movies - not overtly scary but, gut-wrenchingly strange/weird/odd/off-putting. Melancholia was really good too - and I've been wanting to watch Midsommar but haven't had the chance yet.

Midsommar's greatest achievement is creating a protagonist who begins the film sympathetic and ends it as a pathetic embodiment of spiteful insecurity. Never before has a film's protagonist squandered the amount of audience goodwill that the lead of Midsommar did.

I am not a horror person, in fact I'm a certified scaredy cat, but I wanted to know what the deal was with Hereditary. To be honest, apart from THAT moment, I found it rather stupid. All this tension winding up and then I thought the ending was a complete let down. However I'm definitely avoiding some of the films on this list - I'm looking at you, Babadook.
@jimthar174 жыл бұрын
Dont avoid it because it's scary (it's not) Avoid it because it's dumb.
@brooklynant20472 жыл бұрын
I’m like you Karen, as a lifelong horror fan I didn’t know what the big deal was. Sat through it fine. It was disturbing in what the other people were trying to do to the family. “The Babadook” was another one, where I feel the same as you did with this movie, I mean I had to wonder what the big deal was about it. Nothing really out there….to me anyway. Go & watch it.

Melancholia was such a weird and questioning movie to me, i mean, I think the title represents the whole feel and setting of the movie. But I just kept wanting to know why the hell everything was happening the way they did, I just had too many questions. It was so long to watch but I watched the whole thing.

Hagassuza is a truly beautiful work of art. The backgrounds add to the emotional turmoil and lack thereof for the characters. We don't just have the woods and beautiful mountains, but the putrid swamp conveys its own painterly space. Let's just say there are no liminal spaces here. Melancholia was a great choice of movie for Dunst. The action is carefully choreographed and appropriated into 3 acts. The grim subject of the movie reveals the characters' game of chicken: who will last longest before the end? I think the premise is brilliant and the acting just right. Dunst is so beautiful--the perfect young woman full of promise who is our "hero" if we can call her that.

These are the kind of films I like , not action , not gore , but suspence thrillers. Even sci fi I can do , but horror has to be twisted and layered. This is a great list you have here , thx. The mother in the bobaduk played in the girl with the pearl earring.

The wars in recent years have shown us horrors that left us numb to movie horror. The slashing of man's throat by Mad dogs of ISIS, the burning of pilot the wars in Syria with dead, wounded and traumatized children. Mad Lady Albright declaring that Children killed not big deal. Truly monsters exist and movies merely portray what exists.
