Great to see you back Matt. I'm going to be reading The Listeners soon too. Ronald Walotsky is one of my favorite SF artist, usually when I notice some art that I really like I find out it's Ron. I love Book Club editions mostly because they seem unwanted and discarded, plus I joined the SFBC back in the early 90's so there is nostalgia.

Wonderful to see you back Matt I'm trying to collect the Del Rey / Ballantine Best Ofs... but they are not easy to find over here in the UK in good condition, but I've managed to collect 14 of them. Nice haul of hardcovers. I go back and forth on whether I want to collect hardcovers, but they take up too much space so I always end up back with the paperbacks. Read Haldeman's Forever War a couple of months ago and was pretty impressed with it. Back in the day I read quite a few Dick short story collections and enjoyed them. More recently I read my first two novels by him - Man In The High Castle which I did not get on with at all, and Do Androids Dream... which I did quite enjoy - so the jury is still out on him for me. You really should get round to trying Bradbury - he's up there as one of my favourite authors. Sending you both all my best wishes... Peter

If I were to recommend one short story of SF by Bradbury, it would be The Long Rain. The scenery & sensual detail in it are something else. & I was blown away by Where Time Winds Blow - by Robert Holdstock. It's the type of book I will re-read at some point.

‘The Forever War’ is one of my favourite classic SF. Just finished reading a newer novel of Haldeman’s ‘The Accidental Time Machine’. Very different in tone, more of a popcorn movie feel. Beautiful Bear, Niven, Clarke, Simak, etc. hardcovers.

Great to see you! Most of the Book Club editions you’ve shown are from my era in the club, and I can look up and see them on my shelves. Clarke did say Songs of Distant Earth was his favourite; you told me this in a reply to a question I posed so it isn’t a false memory! I’m still on the lookout for that one for completeness sake. As for acquiring and then storing books you never read, something I’m guilty of as well, I take solace in the wise words of Mr. Spock:”Having is not so pleasing a thing after all, as wanting .” Cheers to you!

I'm really happy to have found your channel. When I was still in school I always read mostly high fantasy/science fiction. But in the years since I graduated, I shifted all my attention to high fantasy. New sub here but I'm here for the duration. My peak science fiction reading was from '79 when a teacher introduced me to it to the late 90's when I got together with my now wife. A vintage series I miss is the Berserker saga created by Fred Saberhagen. Very surprised about Heinlein. His early stuff is very solid sf with some good concepts. His writing evolved as he aged but was still good towards the end. 20:57

OMG😂 that fan art cover of Limits!! That cover is its own sci-fi Piano Man video! The coverless haldeman near the beginning is totally book club. Legacy of Heorot is supposed to be way better than that collection of authors working in concert sounds. Like it really is the best of each of them, might want to hold on to that as a reading copy.

Really great to see you. Take it one day at a time. Mythago Wood is more amazing, subtle, and atmospheric then you would expect. It is also a healing book. (I know, woo woo alert) It deals with family, it deals with loss, It deals with disjoint of time and alienation, Of trying to find one's place in time, in the world and where Nations and families overlap, using a framework of British mythology and nature and the unconscious. I might not read it this month or next, but I would read it soon. And I can also help you with the ancient musical cues that are in the book. Best.

A Talent for War is very good. I like his other stuff and read this after reading several of his singletons and the first 5 Hutch books and it shot to the top. Dream Park is like a theme park mixed with an ARG. Of course things go wrong and the characters have to survive and get out. It's a lot of fun. The sequels are good but I don't think they hold up as well

I'd suggest hanging on to that A Talent For War simply for the cover art. The paperback version I've seen available most has that guy with the ridiculously over-detailed space helmet. My favorite of that series to read, though, is Seeker (4th book). I agree with you about that depiction of the Puppeteers. I think the best depiction is found in Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials (not sure where my copy is).
