Kent, thank you I see others only use a recessed mortise. I personally prefer a tenon but I can see the need for a recessed mortise. I really enjoy your videos.

I've been using a small skew to make the dovetail shape, either in the mortise or on the tenon. The skew was just a piece of junk that came with a used lathe. It's basically the same idea as the dovetailed scraper you showed, of course.

I always Lear something on this channel. I have always used a mortise for my bowls. I add lines and textures for signing. What I learned is, I have been going way deeper than I need to. I don’t typically bottom out the recess to the chuck, but I have been going at least half way. Thank you Kent

A good techniques. I have carbide tools as well as traditional tools and find that for bulk material removal using square cutter is easier. I've found that the easiest way for me to establish the angles on mortises and tenons is with a skew chisel taking very light cuts which acts as a negative rake scraper. There are lots of ways to skin the cat.

Thanks for the tips Kent, I came across your video today while trying to understand why my mortise cracked and the bowl came off the lathe. I think I'm making the mortise too deep. Will try again tomorrow.

Thanks Kent, helpful as always. Like Eric already commented, I cut tenon or mortise square first with bowl gouge or parting chisel, then cut the angle with a skew laid flat on the tool rest.

Nice video. I'm new to turning so these videos have helped a lot. I still have a hard time with recesses. Every funnel I've made has been on a recess. Still trying to get better at judging/measuring the base of the bowl to prevent that. For some reason with a tennon it hasnt been an issue yet.

Good info, Kent. I found on my lathe, with my Nova chuck, I can lay a flat carpenter's pencil on the top of the tailstock, and it will place a line at the right size and place for a mortice - very convenient. By turning a mortice with slightly more space than the jaws, while leaving the inner wood, like in your last method, you can have "tenon" inside the mortice and grab the blank either way.

I have been wondering for a while: what is the screen in the shop for? I assume it’s for dust control? If so, are you happy with it? I’ve considered doing something similar to minimize dust while being able to see if someone walks in, and not blocking out as much light as a curtain would.

Soooo, how do you know where to put the left leg to mark the mortise, do that it's centered?
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl Жыл бұрын
Mike, yes, the divider center straddle the bowl. You have to eye ball it and make an intial very light touch to see if the mark appears under the right tip. If not, make the adjustment until it does. Hope that helps. Happy Turning! Kent

Hi Kent great video but can i ask are you just using your eye to gauge the staring point for the divider versus using the measuring from centre . As what i can see this can create a misaligned centre on the base if your judgement is slightly out.
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 11 ай бұрын
Good question, Colin. I straddle the dividers over center visually first and then make a light mark. That mark is usually off a bit, then I adjust until it's lined up. Sometimes I hit it right off. Happy Turning! ;)

And, there's using a Forstner bit and then using skew or spindle gouge for the dovetail. I also made a clone of the teknatool dovetail tool by grinding a spade bit to the same cutting angles - a 3/8 to 1/2 spade bit will do. Do not use the shopmade tool for any other purpose because the shank is not strong enough for hanging it out over the toolrest.

I like to avoid using the tape end and treat 10" as zero. For a 1 3/4" mortise put 10 7/8" at the center & mark it at 10" or 11 3/4".

I really don't wanna be 'that guy' but those cuts you make with the bowl gouge towards center are cutting uphill into endgrain, at least the wing of the tool is. I find myself preferring and getting better results if I rotate the gouge 180 degrees and bring the handle towards me and just peel the side grain

"Recessed Mortise" is sort of redundant. A mortise is, by definition, recessed.
