Oh my God, I’d almost forgotten the trick of swapping pistons and rods in the 318. You’re so right about the porting work. Good old fashioned shade tree hot rod ding from the late 60’s. You bring tears to the eyes of an old geezer like me (72).

You can do almost the same with a SBC too. The best part of everyone going Gaga over a LS these days is all of the CHEAP small blocks that are floating around. I recently picked up a nearly new ProSystems carb setup for NOS for $100. I couldn't walk past the deal even though I had no use for it.

Plenty of small block Chevy engines made more power from the factory (100% production line stock form) than this 318 makes with all the mods. I've now doubt that the same can be said of the hotter 283 small block Chevys, not to mention many of the 327s. This video is essentially meaningless without hard numbers (either chassis dyno video with posted results or a full drag strip run depicting ET and Trap Speed. I'd be amazed if this car could out down more than 175 HP at the wheels or run anything better than an upper 15 second/83 MPH quarter.

Loose is smart, heavy load and high rpms = more heat = more swelling of the metal. The tolerances listed are for daily drivers, Tony's on point for getting the most from his nearly stock motor. Also he is expecting to break some stuff having fun, not get 300,000 miles driving to work. It's just like filing your piston ring end gap, heat swells the metal. Tolerances allow for the swelling so you don't have to measure a hot crank, and oil not only lubricates but transfers heat like coolant. In full on murder mode that crank will swell, and the added oil will keep it from going too far

I'm blown away by this channel. I've spent about $2,000 in the last month on repairs to a Nissan Murano and a Ford F150. I went out and bought a floor jack and jack stands after I watched the money slip away on things I should have done myself...then I saw this channel. I know I've read your articles because all we read in high school was mopar/hot rod mags and here you are busting off the line like a bandit. This stuff is so raw and straight forward. When you said one of your favorite music genres was punk rock it all made sense. Keep up the good work. Don't change a thing.

That is one thing that I really enjoy about your channel Tony, you make it clear that anyone can build an engine. Some of those channels are pumping so much money into their projects that it starts to get a bit intimidating. One of the reasons I was so pissed when they discontinued Popular Hot Rodding magazine and started sending me Hot Rod. I had Hot Rod for years and years but found PHR more valuable because it was full of tech, and things you could do yourself. HR is all sky is the limit budget stuff, no average joe stories any more.

I used to be a Mopar nut back in the day. Good to see someone still running them. Mopar used to sell a performance book w/"recipes" for different builds- B, RB, Slant 6, A and Hemis, I think. The hot tip back then was using parts from the 340 and 360 to open up the flow and strengthen things a bit. Tbh, my B body early 70s car had a 318 and it was a dog, until I split the single exhaust downpipe which was 1 5/8 dia. (and was pinched in half @ the turn at the bottom of pipe where it starts backwords...) I truly believe this is what choked the motor. To make dual exhaust, I used adapters on the downpipe from 1 5/8 to 1 7/8, then 1 7/8 to 2 inch diameter. Then used 2" turn at the bottom, then 2 1/4 adapter then pipes to a set of Cherry Bomb mufflers. Then 2 1/2 pipes out to the sides. This REALLY opened up things and made it a different car. Set the point gap tight by the specs, dwell longer than usual and wider plug gap. Aftermarket air cleaner and adapter. It ran like a scalded ape! And kept the gas mileage reasonable too. Totally agree, these engines have a lot more potential than given credit for.

hahahha, in my little town it was 351W in a Ranger shortbox, and one crazy bastard put a 351 cleveland into a Bronco II. And all the yuppies in the 90's thought the explorers were unstable....hahahaha, that bronco had a wheelbase of like 3 feet I swear. they both went through those garbage ford 7.5 rears roughly 4k miles. Was a tad too early to find all the 8.8's in the junk yet.

Love the video. Just recently picked up a 97 Ram Van with the 5.2 Magnum. 260 thousand miles and even on the massive BF Goodrich street tires it still has the balls to break them loose and get sideways! Nothing wrong with a loose motor, just keep some extra oil on ya cause it will consume it, at least in my case!

I was introduced to the piston trick in the late 80’s by another mechanic in his 80’s. He handed me an old Mopar Performance book with a bunch of old info developed by the Ramchargers and forgotten by most people today. Used this on my Magnum series 360, did a port job on the heads, Thorley tri-y headers, M-1 intake, one of the bigger lift purple shaft cams from MP with roller lifters and rocker tips. Already been 100k on the engine and still super strong. Revs quicker than stock and surprises a lot of people thinking its old junk. Up til now using stock EFI everything, in process of upgrading to Mega Squirt with sequential coils.

360 Magnum is under rated. I had a 2001 ram, it was the off road edition so it had 4:10 locking rear end. Those rich boys in their shiny new Chevy LTZ's sure got butthurt when they couldn't keep up off the line with my old rusty 2nd gen dodge hahaha. They would pass me by at around 50-60 mph but that's the speed limit around here anyway. I miss that truck sometimes, sold it to my brother in law.

Compression does wonders, I just did a small port high compression motor and although only about 350 hp it's a very responsive and snappy motor. Factory electronic ign with msd coil, small diameter long tube headers, underdrive crank pulley with a hi flow water pump and Howe aluminum radiator. Comp 224°/ 230° @ .050 low lift hydraulic cam. Bought a '87 Dodge D-150 in El Paso with 60k original miles. Got 10 mpg or LESS on the drive back to Phoenix. The poor motor was over loaded with smog equipment. Computer controlled distributor. There were so many vacuum lines it looked like a bag of snakes under the hood. In frustration I unhooked all the old controls and set the motor up to run on a simple old style vacuum distributor. The engine, freed from captivity, sang like a bird. Drove that wonderful truck to San Diego and got 19.75 mpg. And she passed emissions with flying colors.

My first new car out of high school was a 1974 Duster with a 318, 3 speed on the floor. Factory ordered without any other bells and whistles. I wanted the 340 4-speed but couldn't afford the insurance. Long story short, I drove that car for years, stored it in a garage for years and then brought it back out with a new battery and it still ran for thousands of miles. Wish I knew some of these tricks back then because I worked at a gas station with service bays, I could have done much of this work in there instead of on the street in front of my house on car jacks ( ;

The 318 is a nice little torchy motor for what it is. Had one in a dart with a two barrel and single exhaust via manifolds. It ran 17s at 77 mph. Spent practically nothing for headers and went dual exhaust and threw on a 750 holley that I got for nothing on top of a $20 manifold from a junk yard. Everything else was a stock as the 68 year old man drove it including the auto transmission. Took it to the track and the headers and 4 barrel took that granny chaser from 17's to a 15.1 @89 mph. Only wish I would have put in a cam and a little bigger than stock fuel pump. Could have been an easy low 14 car in the mid/upper 90s for little work. Not quick by today's standard but back in my day but when the 5.0 mustangs were a low 15 second car on a good day and a newer corvette would be maybe kissing 14.70s, it was very cheap engine to get easy power from by just letting it breath. If I remember my Chiltons right, it was (2 barrel carb) something like 240hp and 320tq. That torque is what I think would catch people by surprise, especially if they wanted to race from a 15 mph rolling start.

If you lose the fan clutch and go electric from a junkyard (probably 10-15 bucks), you can wire on a switch inside or through ignition switch and have it run from jump street but the fan will make you lose 25-35hp on an engine like that CITE: Engine masters ways to lose power episode where many different fans were tested against no fan. Aside from that, this thing is awesome in every way and I loved watching the build.

The Hughes Whiplash 318 cam is a performance camshaft designed for the 1972 and up lower compression 318 engines. It is intended to provide a unique sound and increased power output. Here are some key points: Design: The Whiplash cam is a flat-tappet hydraulic camshaft with a 109° LSA (Lobe Separation Angle) and a focus on low-end torque and mid-range power. Compatibility: It is specifically designed for 318 engines with lower compression (not 69 318s with higher compression) and can be used with stock or aftermarket heads. Performance: The cam is said to provide a nice lope sound and a powerband between 2,000-5,300 RPM. Installation: According to some sources, it can be installed with the motor still in the vehicle, requiring only removal of the front end. Considerations: Vacuum: The cam may produce around 15" of vacuum at idle, depending on elevation and engine condition. Compatibility with roller lifters: The Whiplash cam is designed for flat-tappet lifters and may not be suitable for roller lifters. Options and Alternatives: Lunati PN 10200700: A nitrided camshaft that can be used with 318 heads and stock springs, offering a similar performance profile without the need for reworking valve guides. Hughes Whiplash Basic and Premium Cam Kits: These kits include additional components, such as lifters, springs, and retainers, designed to work in conjunction with the Whiplash cam. Pricing: The Hughes Whiplash 318 camshaft itself is priced around $194.75. The Basic Cam Kit is priced at $592.18, and the Premium Cam Kit at $689.93.

seems to pull pretty good but I can tell that rpm drop shifting from 1st to 2nd gear completely drops it out of the powerband it needs tighter gearing to keep that little motor screaming up top where its happy. You got the right idea with low compression and loose clearances that is the way to build an engine if you want it to survive with lots of boost or nitrous. The cheap ls swap guys use the same philosophy with 5.3L junkyard truck engines and turbochargers just pull a high mileage runner and re-gap the piston rings loose as a goose smack it back together and they are ready for boost lol.

I have a ' 81 W250 with a Edelbrock 1406 4 barrel carb, a NP435 4 speed, and wondering if just throwing in a more aggressive cam would do enough, or how I can cheaply add heads, and a chinesium intake to have a better performing truck for towing, wheeling, highway use. thanks for the great practical videos Uncle T!

My question here so no one gets confused is when you say swap the pistons and rods you’re going 1 for two, 3 for 4, 5 for 6 and 7 for 8 is that correct?

Were going rounds with this on replies from another comment. We cant figure our why he swapped sides. Unless he has valve reliefs in the pistons.

@@whatyoumakeofit6635 The offset pin in the piston will give a different angle to the crank for better angle and torque. But I'm not sure about also turning the rod around from the stock position....something with the oiling at the big rod end. He mentioned a video he did that tells it all but I can't find it! UGH!!!!! FYI: Tony was using flat top pistons with a dish-top.

You should do a budget single turbo 440 big block. A low mileage RV 440 with the rings gapped for boost and a blow through carb

I saw somewhere saying that the valve size should be about 82percent of the intake port size with the port enlarging internally larger than the intake size in the first 30% of the port and tapering back by the time it got the the valve bowl

What's the cams lift duration & lobe separation. Stock cams & rear end gear are set up for daily driving . I had a 72 Pontiac with a Pontiac 350 . The combustion chamber was an oval . Big oval The 68 400 heads were alot smaller . I had flat top Pistons but the motor was 8-1 with the 68 heads the compression ended up being 10-1 . So your stock 318 with a mild cam and close chamber heads you could be up to 9-1 combustion with 410 gears in stead of 297 . Those little things dose a lot . So the motor being in a relaxed place is now at an excited place . That would be a cool idea have a stock car do one change at a time make 3 runs get an advrage time . You know change rear end gear then trans then heads then cam or can then heads make 3 runs get the times . Alittel here a little there dose alot with the right combo and it's cheap . Except for gas they will pass everything but a gas station 😆

Does that distributor have vacuum advance? Probably not? Stock springs in the centrifugal advance and at what rpm does it advance? Perhaps a little video on distributors? Love ya Uncle Tony. My first love is Mopar gas engines, the next is EMD two stroke diesels. Yes I have sludge under my fingernails.

You should check out engine builder Joe Sherman's article called Low Buck 400 horse 302. It's a SB Ford but explains the flipped piston idea that can work for most engines. It's been around since the flat head ford. Gives you more torque and power. It really does work. One downside, need to let engine warm up to temp before getting on it. Which needs to be done anyway. Some cool stuff. 👍

Why kill it with nitrous? Looks like it's doing damned fine as it is. I used to wake up these 318's as a youngster, all with bolt ons, and port and matching. Stock early 340 camshaft with a 4 deg. advance using an offset cam drive key, dual exhaust (no headers), stock dual plane intake and Thermoquad from a 340, or 360 HP with the larger 4 barrel, dual inlet air cleaner would really wake them up. The TQ from a 400, or 440 would work also but required some trial and error to get the mixture curve right. Having done several of these on cars and trucks alike, I'd guesstimate about a 20% uptick in power and looked like a bone-stock 360 4 barrel if someone looked under the hood. Oh, and make sure the heat riser is woking freely in the Rt. exhaust manifold.
