It seemed to me that after they were moved to the sd card, the game couldn’t find them and just had to recompile them in real time. It doesn’t make sense that the steam deck can run full games of an sd card, but not read pre complied shaders. I think balance should be able to fix it somehow

It's not removed by default because of the possibility you may install the game again, then you don't need to have all the initial stuttering in game while it compiles the data again EDIT: But yes, it should definitely be an optional thing during uninstall

@@MyurrDurr Yeah, I can see why this is a difficult issue to resolve. Still it’s pretty ridiculous. Because as you install & play different games, each game will eat away at the storage without a built in way to handle that data. If the user doesn’t have the technical knowledge of this video creator, then it will essentially permanently eat away the storage for them because they don’t have the technical know how to delete it safely. Also deleting these files manually may also delete save data for games that don’t support Steam Cloud saves. So, really this is a pretty huge issue that I hope is resolved soon.

@@AetherMomon that, and if your internal data gets filled and the steam deck wants to update. Your steam deck is soft brick and you have to boot from an sd card to either clear space or reset your system. Happened to me

Shaders get rebuilt when playing. You’re not losing anything. It takes mere seconds to do so. It’s so much easier to clear everything once in a while and just rebuild as you launch games.

One of the easiest less techy ways to manage this is to use Decky and the shader cache plugin. You just click the game cache you want to remove from an easy to naviagte list. You can also clear them all with one click.

For some reason I don't have this issue. When I delete a game it's corresponding Shader cache disappears as well. I checked in the shaderkiller program and in my main drive and it's both gone and the "other" file size has shrunk. Did they address this in an update?

Thats great. Just 1 problem. i'm testing a 64gb version of a steam deck. Part of the testing involves not using sudo commands as that creates a security risk. As the steam deck is made with no sudo passw access. Only if the user creates a sudo passw. Which then activates sudo access.. Now nothing is preventing a script from using sudo commands... anyway you can just show us an easy and clean way of freeing up space? like what the script does for us?

A huge part of the Steam Deck is desktop mode where you have to not only navigate around but transfer files download stuff etc all around OS usage It's kinda confusing for first timers and non Linux users. I second that. There are 2 issues that I would like to be covered: 1. I'm reasonably comfortable with Debian flavored Linuxes like Ubuntu, but not with Arch, and Arch is different on some important points (I think I'm not the only one with this problem), 2. The Linux on the Steam Deck cannot be used like a normal Linux, you can't install programs in the normal way because they can be overwritten with a Steam OS update. So it is important to know what exactly you can and cannot do without running into problems after an update. A video on these issues would be very much appreciated!

@@FrostStroke It’s normal. I decided to factory reset my device a while ago now, which took the 'other' to around 3GB. After installing a few games its now back to 40GB :D I expect it'll mainly be Proton, Protontricks and WINE stuff I do have Decky storage cleaner plugin installed which shows shader cache is 244MB and compatibility data is 2.64GB.

I have a problem, everything worked fine for the first time. But after that i cant seem to get the shaderkiller to run again. It starts to launch but after 2 secs it stops. Deleting that compactdata will cause the game to stop working. The easy solution is just to reverify the flies which will take a few minutes. Steam will just redownload the files that got deleted so the game can run again.

I could understand keeping them up to a threshold in case you reinstall or just moved the game to external media to play again later, without needing to re-download/generate, so long as there is more than x GB left of free space before removing the oldest or least used games cache

They coded the prompt to say low disc space, why not have the system delete the least recent cache at whatever the low disc space warning threshold is and then if it still hasn't enough free space give the warning and at this point the system will have deleted almost all the shader cache and it will be down to the user to decide what games have to go Edit: BTW I'm not normally this grumpy a gamer, I think Valve are doing a great job with the Steam Deck in general and it's amazing how quick they come out with patches sometimes which is probably why this annoyed me so much when the fix seems so simple lol

I'm not 100% sure about this, but don't the compatdata folders contain save files of games that aren't supported by the cloud synch? There is also an option in the steam deck itself to stop creating shadercache folders when you launch the game, but I'm not sure if its the same ones or just extra files that download in the background while the game is on so it runs better. In any case, would be handy for the steam deck itself to just remove all unnecessary files once a game is deleted instead of leaving residue files that clog up the space and then you have to navigate through dozens of folders just to find stuff you're not even sure if you don't need, eventually you'll download/delete so many games you'll run out of space entirely.

@@SteamDeckGaming Sorry for the late reply, actually I tried using sleep, after a while, it still redownloads Shader Cache. In the end I just turned off the Community Shader Cache feature, Yes I have to rebuild the cache myself but after a while, it runs well anyway. I would say it probably runs worse for a first few seconds or minutes, but it will stabilized. It would be nice to have steam build your own shader cache on the game your attempting to play as an option, so you don't have to encounter stuttering or requiring to download community shaders from others online. I saw some mobile games do build Shader Cache once locally (which might take a while but at least without downloading large files) then next time you can play the game smoothly

He's only deleting the shader cache for the 'missing' games, which presumably are the ones he has uninstalled. Notice he did not delete unchartered collection shader cache and that was installed on the internal drive as he is clearly still playing it.

Hey, i followed your video but when i come to the point of adding the zcachekiller into non steam programs its not even on that list? i have no clue why this is happening, i am an experienced windows user touching linux for the first time ever lol :D still from what i can tell i dont seem to have shortcuts for the program
