Of course, I had to comment on you helper when you began on the outside of the barn. It’s so refreshing when people allow little ones to get their hands dirty. My dad did the same, and his patience and direction was invaluable for me to be able to attack a project with the skills I’d learned.

lol, well I never claimed to be an expert, this is a DIY channel after all, and the very concept of "Do It Yourself" implies that you aren't an "expert". But I did spend several days/weeks working very hard reclaiming the wood in this video. Id love to hear what you'd do differently though.

@@PatriotDIY Great video. I'm working on a 100+ year old timber house in Australia. Pulled out a couple of walls lined with 6 inch T&G red mahogany. Like you said - thousands of dollars of timber for nothing so I'm lining out the new kitchen with it. Kitchen ceiling originally lined with timber similar to yours but sheeted over with asbestos in the 60's. Cleaned them up like you did and re-lined the raised ceiling with them on exposed beams. DIY is hard work but we don't care, do we?? Re-using priceless old timber that cost you nothing is so rewarding.

My problem is that I can't seem to find barn wood. Most every thing I find is someone else selling barn wood at and over inflated price thanks to reality TV shows.

I have been taking down tobacco barns for 30 years and the last 15 years selling the timber. You should NEVER pressure wash barn timber. Just a light sanding with 60 grit paper will clean the barn timber up and will not harm the saw marks. The saw marks are what you want to highlight with the barn timber. Bora Care is the best for treatment for any kind of bugs in the timber but it will make the grain stand up so treat it first then sand it. Also the stuff is called rolled roofing that is on the side of the barn and best just to use a crow bar to just peel it off. That rake you showed is a waste of time and would make the job twice as hard. Believe me I have done so many I know the easy way to do it.

Gunna have to disagree with you brother!!! I spent hours with a crowbar and when I switched to the roofing shovel it went 10 times faster!! And what's wrong with pressure washing off all the dust, pollen, and spiderwebs??? Like I said in the video, it was a light pressure washing, I didn't take off any material. Thanks for the advise though, I'll remember that for next time!

That's not modified lol That's just the felt layer underneath the shingles. And the shingle bar he used to remove it makes quick work of that job. Also idk what pressure washer you are using, if it takes saw marks out of 100 year old wood that thing is way too powerful for anything home related lmfao

This is not a game, people can get kill doing this so being extremely careful is 100% necessary.
