I guess that’s his problem. He’s well aware of his fans, don’t be fooled. To him however it’s just his job and the ‘James hetfield’ we See on stage and in public is a mask he puts on. To you he is your life basically, to him you’re one of many, and he may be thankful and glad for each one of his fans who loves him and his work but at the end of the day you’re a stranger who’s fallen for his mask. You see, he’s an introvert and a privat person and he says it’s as gratifying as it is scary when people show you their love to that extent. people elevate him to a god and that brings expectations and pressure. He considers himself a human being with flaws and he wants to be treated that way. Fans crying, hyperventilating, professing their undying loyalty and love and whatnot is a bit unnerving/uncomfortable to him, you can see that each time when he met overbearing fans. he’s notorious for hating that whole fame thing. Another thing is that fan love is projected onto a stage persona. Hardly anyone from his fans knows the authentic and real James hetfield behind the scenes. That’s the downside of fame. People always attach the superstar to a person, they hardly see them as a regular human being and that in itself makes them lonely. Loneliness among people is one of the scariest experiences. I fully understand how he only wants to be around family and close friends because he needs that love for his real self when he’s down.

The Het is such a cool dude. I got a chance to say hi to him once when I worked as a local stage crew for Metallica in 2004, he was just super cool and said hi and thanked me for the work I was doing. James is definitely the coolest cat in the band. It makes me happy to see how proud he is of his insane car collection and this book 🤘🏼

Hobby turned into a serious passion. I'd put his creations up there with any famous names you see on the many builder shows profiling their work. Beautiful book of truly inspiring artistic builds! How time changes people. I've witnessed the evolution of a top shelf, world renown band. The longevity alone is outstanding.
