Watch Big Tree Removal in 9 Minutes

This Fir Tree take down was for Alligator Creek Falling Ltd in Sooke B.C. The tree had extensive decay throughout the lower stem, a large cavity in the top quarter of the canopy and a prominent lean towards a house. A large section of the standing stem will be retained as a wildlife pole for the next 10 years at least. Thereafter it may be shortened a bit more. 2 of us completed the work by early-mid afternoon. We were able to discharge the woodchip at the base of the tree to lessen the impact and deflection of falling logs throughout. The whole area was logged in the 60s I believe. But this tree was evidently left standing because it was comparatively a poor specimen of little commercial value.

Great stuff as always, thank you Reg - thanks too for including the story of the tree in the description, I like that. These trees have lived a life much longer than our own; although trees are very everyday things, as individuals they're also pretty remarkable really. I think it's good for them to have a little epitaph to mark their final day. Or maybe I'm just a sentimental old fool 😉

Reg you are an artist of our craft. I pride myself on being by far the most adept climber in my area but you sir are far better than I am. My hats off to you my friend and I hope to someday progress to the prowess and calm you possess. Most of what I deal with is 75+ foot elms and 100+ foot monster cottonwoods. Not much softwood where I am. I am not afraid of heights I respect them and work comfortably but most my work has to be rigged out.

Thank you for posting your work and another fine job. It is nice to see your methodical and efficient work for maybe one day I can reach such proficiency. I doubt I have time to achieve such a level as such skill and motion elegance in going up and working the cuts with rigging and coming down has to come from many many ascents. Can’t imagine how many trees you have climbed but your work shows in videos the care and precision for the tree and yourself and your ground crew. I can only imagine the challenges in working the north west damp or wet trees. I like d the backing music also. Very nice. The video seems to allow one to get a glimpse into how tree work can be calming and zen like when you know what you are doing as you demonstrate in your videos. Appreciate you showing and taking time to produce the west big tree work. Great content. Interested in the gear also. I think you may have discussed it in prior videos. If it is available I may have missed the news.

Would be curious to know what kind of deal you got on those, though totally respect your privacy if you'd rather not share. As a carpenter I've come up with a few ideas, looked into the whole patenting and licensing thing and just got overwhelmed. I just like making stuff and they make it so hard: business and legal shenanigans. Anyhoo, thanks again. Mark

I've got about 7 or 8 products with Stein. We have contracts in place and I get paid commissions on every item sold. I am not at liberty to disclose my % per item. The patent process is very expensive and you would really need to hire a patent Lawyer to work through the process with you. Registered design is much less expensive and might be applicable depending on how simple your designs are. They tend to protect the appearance or shape more than functionality, but obviously the shape might be the very reason something works well. My experience with these matter is the further you can advance ideas through the process on your own, the more you have to bargain with. If all you have is an idea or a half baked untested prototype, it's highly unlikely any manufacturer will be at all interested. But if you have something that's been field tested for 6 months; documented, refined where needed to the best of your abilities, Intellectual property rights in place or applied for where possible, and non disclosure agreements with anyone associated, then they will likely pay attention. But before all that investment, you need to be sure your idea is saleable and will in fact sell. I would suggest you get some opinions from local, reputable tree workers if possible, for starters. Have a non disclosure agreement at hand, download them dirt cheap off the net. Thinking you have a great idea is worthless if nobody else agrees with you. So you really must do a lot of research on work place techniques and already available hardware before you start getting in deep with an idea. It's not easy, but it is doable and profitable if your on to something good. At worst you could be throwing 10s of thousands into a bottomless pit quite quickly. Best of luck

I'd come to that conclusion regarding patents but was still stopped in my tracks reading, a design shouldn't be made or exist until a patent is filed for. I didn't know (or had forgotten) about "Registered design" and hadn't considered "Intellectual property rights". The couple of ideas I have are for the carpentry/building world but all you say is totally applicable: research and development. I know of NDA's and I guess it's question of taking myself and my ideas seriously (while bearing in mind the potential money pit). Massively appreciate you taking the time to write all that.
