A gene between dragons that have a human form is that hair color may change at times during puberty, till the main gene has been sorted from the parent for distinguishing looks, reason why Silas didn't go through that is because his birth parent died after giving birth too him, yes the gene has a way of figuring out if the parent is living or not in order to sort itself out correctly.
