The 1970s began as an extension of the sixties and then took a turn as Generation X grew into their own. There were so many contrasting things happening, from Watergate to the emergence of the Summer Blockbuster movie. It was certainly a time when escaping reality was necessary, and it ended up giving us so many memorable moments. So, let’s take a look back, and if you grew up in the 1970s, you may remember this!

No cell phones, personal computers, or social media. We had each other. Face to face. We talked, laughed, rode our bikes, climbed trees, watched Saturday morning cartoons, and Saturday Night Live at night, roller skated or skate boarded, and danced to some of the best music ever made. We didn't even realize how good we had it until it was gone.

@@bobblowhard8823 Same here! I can name all of them. Dan Ackroyd and favorite guest Buck Henry played the ultimate sleazebags. Once they were gone, the show was awful untol Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo came on. That was pretty decent until they left. I haven't really watched the show since. And, when I do see it, it's unfunny. Today, they even apologize when they do go over the line. Producer Lorne Michaels and the original cast never apologized for anything.

As a teen in the 1970's, we went to the local arcade to play video games for hours. When a friend got Pong, his home became the place to be. As basic as that game was, having it on a home TV felt like technology had reached its PINNACLE. What could be greater? Nobody imagined everybody would soon have games on their phones. Or even phones that weren't attached to a wall. Only in the world of the Jetsons!

Lord, yes. You brought back a memory! I found the lamp in the early 80s at a church rummage sale after I'd bought myself a house. My dad hung it for me, and it actually worked. I also bought a glass and metal etagere (a 4-shelved open thing) to match. I eventually sold the glass stuff at a garage sale. I grew up with the Early American furniture in the 70s and actually prefer the warmer woods even now, the stuff that was made well back then. (I truly don't like much of the modern furniture I see, seems like it's just crap, ditto the modern appliances).

Earth tones everywhere, orange/rust colored shag carpeting in every room but the bathroom, hanging lamps over the kitchen counters, which were orange, multi colored wallpaper, a giant TV and stereo set encased in real wood that must've weighed 200lbs, avocado green cabinets and appliances, ( all from Sears) the biggest microwave I've ever seen ( you could easily fit a big turkey in it) with dials, not touch pads and so much more. Fun fact, I still recall going with my dad to a gas station in 79 and paying over a dollar per gallon for the 1st time for regular (leaded) fuel. He was so flabbergasted, he kept the receipt.

Dr. Scholl's wooden sandals and Coty Sweet Earth Perfume and DIY candles ( you got a jar, a wick and three different scents of wax chips to layer as you pleased.) The scents were sandalwood, grass, hay, patchouli, and fruit ones like strawberry, melon, tangerine and others. There was also a green apple perfume in a glass decanter . ( Their slogan was "wear it and he'll bite!) I remember in Science Class one day ( after most of the girls came in late from trying to run to class in chunky platform shoes 🙂) our teacher said " It's smells like fruit salad in here " and all the girls pulled out their little portable perfume packs and started naming their favorite scents! My room was wallpapered in bright pink and orange flowers and full of posters that I bought for ten cents and my brother put up in my room all these psychedelic glow in the dark black light posters. An era of hair, hot pants and hippies. Everyone was into the Bicentennial with colonial furniture, granny maxi dresses, the Bicentennial star logo was everywhere. Midi skirts and minis, and boys prom tuxedos were baby blue, yellow, peach and ruffled. Bright colored clothes were everywhere and embroidered jeans and ponchos. Space was big too as we all watched the rockets blast off. They televised the first Earth Day celebrations all day. I can still remember watching a group of people throwing a giant Earth Ball around. My Dad and older brother waiting to buy gas every other day when allowed. We had the rust brown shag carpet too and TV trays to eat your TV dinners on to watch all the sitcoms on then. And I finally admit it, I had a BIG crush on Bobby Sherman from " Here Comes the Brides." Days were spent outside, bike riding, playing with super balls, trading Wacky Packages and reading Seventeen, Mad and Glamour magazines. Glamour gave the instructions on how to do the Hustle.

Thanks for mentioning the bicentennial this time. I think many people didn't even know what it was when I mentioned it in the comments last time. That's kind of sad very sad

I'm from Northborough, Massachusetts, -about 33 miles west of Boston. I grew up during this time. I'll be 60 in August. I can definitely state that almost nobody from my generation wanted to look like Adam Rich, and we certainly did NOT beg for a stupid "bowl cut," haircut! My parents were very liberal, but, when it came to haircuts , there were choices of barbers in our town, one of which was a retired Marine, who'd ONLY cut a boys hair in the USMC traditional ,"High and Tight, " fashion. Every male that walked in that barber shop would walk out with a quarter inch on the very top of his head, and absolutely baby slick sides and the back of their head. And, this barber actually retired in his 70s having earned a very comfortable middle class income from his barber shop, and ,having followed the book, "The Millionaire Barber," he actually did retire a multimillionaire! Being in the mid-decade, our tastes in music did very much despise disco! Boys weren't about learning dances like the hustle, or the chicken dance! They were excuses to leave the floor at the Rollerskating Rink, which, we did NOT call roller discos! These entertainment facilities owners were retired Marines & Police Officers, - my favorite place, Spinaround, was owned by the very conservative Former US Marines, - State Police Leiutenant, Mr. Crocker, and his brother, Boston Police Captain Crocker & their families. The young men of my generation hated Former president Jimmy Carter, for his support of the Ayatolla against the Shah of Iran in the Iranian revolution, AND we hated the Muslim extremists who truck bombed the United States Marine Corps barracks in Beruit, Lebanon, in 1983, - prompting many of us to head to our nearest Marine Corps Recruit Station! We wore Mickey Mouse flipping the bird, t shirts, which stated: F**k Iran, and showed our patriotic support for the hostages Iran took by supporting Ronald Reagan for President in 1980! The democrats did so much harm to our returning troops from Vietnam, we had to support a conservative to restore the Republic, which is exactly what Reagan did!

Wow, glad to see you saw the light despite having liberal parents! But back then, liberals still did love America. It wasn't like today when the entire democrat party has given way to globalism, communism and some kind of weird corporate totalitarianism. I'm a Marine wife btw, and glad to hear the Marine barber made some $ in the 70s!

Star Wars came to our little town and played at the drive-in theater. My school buddy and I parked in the front row and layed in the grass, high as hell, looking up at the huge screen and watched the movie.

The annual family vacation was a long road trip using paper maps where you didn’t know if your family car would overheat or break down when you got there (both happened to us, on separate trips). Flying was a special treat where you actually used the barf bag during turbulence. It was the best of times. 😊

I remember EXACTLY where I was when I was told that Elvis was dead. My mom came down the street to tell me and my friends. I was 10 years old and a huge Elvis fan. We were riding our bikes in Chino Hills, California. The news was shocking to us kids as he was larger than life to us at the time.

Did you realize that when you showed the boys with the bowl cuts that the boy on the right was Ben Affleck when he played CT Granville in The Voyage of the Mimi. That show ran on PBS around the time of 3-2-1 Contact and The Electric Company. My son watched them all but especially loved The Mimi. We recorded all the episodes on VHS and watched them for years. When my son was 6 we went to Gloucester where the Mimi was moored and since my brother was friends with the owner Peter Marston (who played Captain Granville) we got to go aboard and I got pictures of my son at the wheel. He was in 7th heaven! Mr. Martson's wife and daughter gave us a tour of the Mimi.

Anyone remember the beads that were hung in doorways and in windows? The bathroom in my (inherited) home has beads in the window. Been up since 1974. I will never take them down. I guess they became somewhat popular in the 60s 🤷‍♂️

I was born 1965, I remember having Schwinn Varsity 10-Speed Bike, Dark Green. I also had Honda 1975 Z-50 Mini Bike in Yellow. Use to organize baseball games with my Friends in Neighborhood at school Diamonds in Summer, all day. I remember bell bottom pants. Cars were big, remember my friend's parents had early 70's Station Wagon back seat faced back of car, coolest seat in car, window rolled down, driver touched a button.
