Huawei P30 Camera Review | Beyond the Zoom

Chris has been testing the Huawei P30's tri-lens camera for two weeks now and here's his full review of this upgraded hardware, taking a closer look at the photo and video quality as well as that fresh periscope telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
Huawei’s new 40MP Super Spectrum primary lens leads the P30 camera line-up, with an f/1.8 aperture for sucking up plenty of light. Then there’s a 16MP Ultra Wide Angle snapper to capture a panorama-style effect, plus a funky 8MP telephoto shooter with that much talked about periscope design. However, unlike the Pro, you don't get a 5x optical zoom - the vanilla P30 'makes do' with 3x zoom, which is still better than most rivals can manage.
Photo quality is excellent across the board, thanks to the brilliant Master AI scene detection, slick Night Mode and best-in-class Portrait feature. And while the Galaxy S10 boasts better video chops, you can still capture solid 4K home movies on the Huawei P30.
So is this the greatest mobile camera of 2019? We reckon so!

Maybe that was smooth in 1080p 60fps... That shake video maybe that was a 4k resu shoot... Thats why it shakes... 1080p smooth is relly good

Hows the speaker and battery life?

Oxi Clean The speaker is excellent. Dolby system is awesome and efficient when it comes to audio playback. And it got 3.5 jack. Battery is better than I thought. Last at least 2 days on standby. Outclasses iphone in my opinion . Make sure you turn off notification of apps you don't intend to use often....Overall I'm very satisfied.

Oxi Clean I’m not promoting Huawei whatsoever, but it’s the best smartphone when it comes to ui if you’re switching from Apple. The simplicity makes it great. On my phone standby is close to 3 days. Depends what you intend use it for. I’m a casual user. You can even use Dark mode to increase longevity. I suggest you google the batter specs for a more accurate numbers. Good luck

One thing I want to highlight and want you to confirm this is that both P30 and P30 pro have a stutter while panning in video. It's kind of annoying and spoils the whole video. Also something else I noticed is that the portraits in this review have a noticeable blur just around the outlines of the face. This blur is different from the background blur and again is very non-pleasing to look at.

i have my p30 and that is what i notice as well, video is weird , that it jumps when you zoom in past 10x and started to change color.It can zoom upto 30x but its not usable anymore because its too grainy and the blurring effect of the picture background is bad compared to my huawei mate 10 which has an awesome bokeh effect. im really disappointed buying this phone. the free GT watch is nice.

i have and love this phone - but someone needs to confirm that zooming past 1x on any camera brings in a lot of weird morphing noise in the video. Even worse in Filmic Pro, I've resorted to only shooting without ever zooming in --- so now I have to buy various high-end sandmarc lenses that cost $100 each

I noticed a significantly weaker sound in videos made with P30 pro. Video resolution was nice, but sound - too quiet. So I'm wondering is it the same on P30, how is the sound in video recordings? You'd help a lot by sharing!

I still don't understand why my old sony z5 compact video stabilization looks much better then any of the stabilization in new phones on videos I found. Is it my hand so stable and the review makers can't hold a camera properly, or just lame stabilization in new mobiles???

Hi, 🙋‍♂️ I just bought the Huawei P30 with the camera being it most wanted feature so I can film my work for my YT videos, I'm a little disappointed with the 4K that judders when panning around? so I've left it on 16:9 1080p, 60fps which gives a good quality video, I presume either modes are still using the 40mp lens? if you can help, Thanks

@@quotywood3862 Night mode is actually one of the best features on this camera (if you put aside the regular non-night mode camera settings), i'm surprised this guy didn't acknowledge it for what it is, mentioning some grainy footage and what now and how it's comparable to most phones. Just type in any other better rated P30 review on YT and you''ll see and hear that they've all praised the night mode. I have a P30 that i bought just like two weeks ago and night mode is perfect, takes like 5 seconds for the shutter and SW/AI to do the work while you're keeping is steady, but the shots turn out great. :) If you need any more info, let me know.

The battery is good on boot, the processor too. The P30 has the audio Jack. The wireless is not important for me. Maybe sin on impermeability, but it's also a little particular. There are very few videos on the P30 not pro version. The price here in Italy between the two phones is almost the same.. Any advice on choice?

I was actually divided between both of them as well. However the Mate 20 Pro has that curved display which is highly reflective. It's almost impossible to use to me with all that light constantly being reflected by the screen. If that is not a problem, go for the Mate 20 Pro, it has the highest quality I have ever seen on a phone. I am now deciding between the P30 and a Pixel 3a or a 3a XL. I watch a lot of videos so I think I will go for a P30, even if the camera is better on the Pixel. Hope I helped!

Spoiler alert- Only for Photo enthusiast folks Bought P30 on 10 Nov 2020 and its been 20 days for strong outdoor/indoor shooting.. its is an upgrade from 2016- p10 which is having AF issues now.... I must say this, it's not a worth buy.. pictures are too saturated and contrasty leaves limited room to work on Lightroom-mob.. greens and blues are intolerable in broad-day lights.... cant shoot on higher res on an Auto mode.. 40mp is only available only Pro-setting mode and that's a shame.. (p10 allowed 16mp intermediate). I always walk around with a Fujifilm camera with long-range prime and the mobile camera is for short close range-wide-angle subject..... and I had huge expectations after using p10 for 4 years now// so this is coming from purely camera user experience.... wide-angle and super macro shots are extremely soft... I mean my shots from a 2017 P10 are 10 time better colour and sharpness retention...

The problem is the android 10 or emui 10.1 as we call it, when you get the p30 the pictures anre beyond great but if you updated the enui then you fucked it up. Lets hope it fiezes with android 11 in some weeks from now.

I agree. Im so dissapointed on the p30. I expected more. Even my p20 lite can shot better shots, then my new p30. The zoom is impressive tho.

What settings do you recommend for videoshooting? 1080P video doesnt support optical zoom, is that right? And 30FPS vs 60FPS in nighttime? My testing shows that 60FPS gets really noisy and I can barely looking at it without getting a seizure. And tips, advices or opinions? Cheers for the video, altho I have to say for some of your pronounciations I almost wished I had subtitles. :) Strong, but nice accept haha :)

Chris you sound as if your late hurrying up to catch the Metro, everything was rushed hence the many negative comments. If your going to do a review slow down & give a more professional understanding of what this P30 can do, which is cover a wide range of techniques for the average "Geordie"

Your shots of the garden are so nice! While i tried huawei p30 in the forest, with AI switched off, i've got dull shots of the landscape - way too detalized. I wish it would have kind of scenes list and filters besides AI. Maybe someone would have useful links and advises on shooting natural landcapes with huawei p30?

@@Pa0loNaPoLi i just got my p30 and i would say its an excellent phone for the price, you get a flagship phone and its comfortable and i totally suggest the p30 as even if u liked the wireless charging u can just buy a case that supports wireless charging for p30, the camera is a lot better than i expected and the phone is actually really fast
