Move Me is probably my favorite video game song ever. Type 4 has an amazing soundtrack, and it certainly speaks to its quality that it’s not only so beloved so many years later, but that Kohta Takahashi continues trying to capture its magic on his YT channel.

This is still my favorite racing game of all time. Sure, there are "technically better" racing games nowadays, but the vibe this game has is unrivalled to this day. The mix of the soundtrack, the tracks, the art style, the lighting and visuals come together to form an experience that is far greater than the sum of the parts. The soundtrack specially, is avantgarde as far as I'm concerned, still listen to it everyday (driving late night listening to "Your Vibe", with the roads all empty, only you, the car and the music, is an amazing experience). Really wish Namco remastered this game, and even tried another go at the Ridge Racer with the same approach, no other racing game to this date scratches the same itch R4 does for me.

Exactly what my thoughts were playing this last year, aesthetics were very well conveyed and is graphically impressive for a ps1. Racing felt great and I quite enjoyed the story, especially with the PRC and DUG racing teams. A very solid and overlooked game. So many aspects still feel modern and holds up incredibly well. I was blown away with how good it was for 1998

RRT4 is eternal because you can taste the artistry. It's all over the game from the menu design, story, visuals and of course the masterpiece that is the soundtrack. Time cannot weather this game.

I grew up on RRV and didn't discover this one until a couple years ago and have loved it ever since. I admittedly haven't enough time in to unlock a lot of things, but the style of it all is so good that it feels important to me all the same

Its been 25 years since the release of RIDGE RACER TYPE 4, and its still a truly masterpiece game! It also has the most number of cars in the entire Ridge Racer series, with 321.

Fun fact about the dialogue that you get after beating a race in the Grand Prix mode, it obviously changes depending on your placement in a race but it also changes if you lose a race and win on the retry. For instance I actually got a slightly different after race cutscene on RT Solvalou once despite getting first since I had lost that first time around. This game will always have a special place in my heart since it was literally the first game I ever played and it still has my favorite drifting mechanics in the whole series. It's been with me (both literally and figuratively since I still have the original disc) since I was a kid and i'm glad I was able to grow up in a time when games like this were still coming out regularly.

R4 is also a technical MASTERPIECE. How did they get that draw distance, those lighting effects, the polygon count, and still staying at the max PSX resolution. It's truly a wonderful piece of software, even outside of the videogame itself.

Man, this was the game that started it all for me, the first game I'd ever owned, that came boxed with the first console I'd ever owned. Just the stellar soundtrack is enough to trigger such intense nostalgia in me. Kudos for covering this forgotten gem

I get chills and get lit every time I hear Lucid Rhythms and when I see the song being played on the track imo fits perfectly with that song (Out Of Blue) but Move Me, Naked Glow, The Ride, and Revlimit Funk were in my top five Lucid Rhythms being my #1

The team worked wonders within the hardware's limitations. The graphics are very low res by today's standards but they managed to produce visuals that feel very grounded and realistic. Those night time tracks feel so authentic and still look stunning to me. I don't say that about a lot of older games.

I might have to revisit this one on PS5. It's cool they have it available that way, though I hope one day they make a collection of all the early Ridge Racers (including arcade), perhaps with performance enhancements (they could easily run at 4K/120Hz on PS5) and online play.

namco was wild on ps1 every game of that company i love it , i played a lot , and i mean a lot this game tryng to unlock the 320 cars, a insane amount of cars for a arcade game , the music the atmosphere of this game is superb, and the other game i love a lot in this period was Ace combat from the same developers, they use the same engine and dev team, so a lot of thing they learned on ridge racer they apply on Ace combat 2 and 3 , and then with Ace combat 4 they combine some people and they made Project aces , so this period was pretty interesting

Yeah I watched a video not so long ago called "I Love Racing Games, They Suck!" by "Raycevick" which is basically about exactly that problem. As I recall the only two currently active racing games that weren't sim and were good were Wreckfest and Art of Rally. Sad to be down to like two good games in a whole genre.

Ridge Racer is great, I would definitely slot it into the "arcade" category but that's from a purely driving perspective. That said, driving well and using the right racing line will indeed put you far ahead of the competition up to the top difficulties!

This on paper should be my favorite Ridge Racer. One of the best versions of RR handling, best aesthetics, best tracks, best music. I do wish it had a quick race mode where you can race any car any class on any track with ai opponents instead of being yelled at by the commentator for being slow during time trials. I also dont like sandbagging to unlock cars.

This game is a great companion on portable hardware (Steam Deck for me) - as there are over 300 cars to unlock, but each race only takes around 3-6 minutes to complete. So chipping away at the grand prix whenever I have some spare time has been how I've spent most of my 2023. For those who love the soundtrack, Kohta Takahashi released an album last year (REIWA TYPE 4) as a reimagining of what a new Ridge Racer games' soundtrack might be.

This game has some of the best style you'll see in a racing game, or any game for that matter. Driving in this game, especially at nighttime, is always relaxing. I wish the ost was on streaming, but CD copies aren't crazy expensive.

R4's soundtrack reminds me a lot of Street Fighter 3's musical styles. It took elements of DnB/jungle/hip-hop and blended it with the more traditional themes of characters (Gouki is a great example) to capture the vibe of the game perfectly. R4 is underrated in so many aspects, but great to see someone discussing the audio.

Yo, if you're playing on native res for a more accurate experience you should be using NTSC CRT filters to better simulate an old crt tv. I don't even play with higher internal res anymore, if anyone out there is interested in this stuff, retroarch comes with a bunch of those shaders built in and they're pretty easy to set up, and boy, it's strange at first because the graphics look a bit blurry, but you won't go back to playing without the shaders once you see how much better they make the game look tho. Dithering and blockyness aren't supposed to be visible like in LCD screens at all, those games were made with crt in mind after all.

Excellent video. I don't liket he ridge racer series at all. I enjoy BurnOut2 and FZero GX the most and back in the day Sega Rally and the first Need For Speed. Jet Moto was also pretty good, thought I like the first best. The other two reinvent the game too much. Also got a bit into BurnOut Dominator and tried one of the newer Need For Speed games, underground. And holy crap is the need for speed series trash. For how good the first need for speed was it's amazing how cheap every other Need for speed is. Playing the newer Need For Speed games back to back with burnout2 or dominator is mind blowing. One series is dead the other is alive. And I can see why. One costs money to make the other is crapped out in seconds by beginner teams...

It’s strange that Namco hasn’t made a new Ridge Racer game on modern PlayStation consoles since then, cause it is a pretty fun racing game. I remember playing Ridge Racer on the PSP, and it was so much fun.
