Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

Thanks for the great video. For a 7' medium rod to fill that 2nd setup "if you only have one" setup, would you go with the Penn 25N mated to Carnage 2 Med/Light 20-50lb rating or the Carnage 2 Med. 30-80lb rating? I'm in the LA area, Catalina and occasionally SD SoCal fishing, mostly party boat. thanks

Great video, but I'm trying to get into bait caster reels for the maximum line capacity they have, and I'm not sure if this is the place I need to be. I use a 12 ft pole. Are these reels good for casting offshore? I need to bomb the line out far, and from what I've learned, a trolling reel is different from a bait caster? I've always used a spin reel but the line capacity does not compete with these types of reels. I'm fishing for White Sturgeon offshore, off the Columbia river in Washington. Looking for any tips that can lead me to my first official bait caster reel. Any suggestions help, and are appreciated.

We call these a conventional reel. They do cast far for sure, especially with a rod that long. If you aren't used to casting a conventional reel, you'll need to practice to get the hang of it. Best of luck.

Make sure you have heavy weights 12-16oz, 6/0-7/0 super mutu circle hooks, 60-80 test setups for big yellows and grouper bottom fishing. Sibiki setups you will catch your own bait in the morning. Surface iron fishing is awesome down there. So have heavy and light jigs.

Really interesting. I am just starting to fill out my quiver having never fished for anything other than rockfish/lingcod! I was gifted a 7' MH 40-100lb TICA WASABI Jigging rod and an 7' MH Uglystick Bigwater 20-50b rod. I just purchased the FTH25NLD2 and the FTH40NLD2 to mate to the rods. Are my rods just slightly lighter than you would recommend for the reels ... in is my 40-100 better suited for the 25N and then I get a beefier rod for the 40N?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say not being familar with those exact rods. Judging by the line specs I think you're pretty close. Put the 40 on the heavy rod and the 25n on the lighter rod and go fish. You can tweak your set up from there. Good luck.

Dear Mr i see all videos and i wat buy a Penn to fish big tuna with live bait or maybe popper. I have a Saragossa 18K, but is is small for some tunas i catch i fight 3 or 4 hours with it. I want something more strong, and i thinking a conventional reel like Fathon lever drad 30 or lever drag, but lever drag is possible to casting? I fish in Oil Ships in Rio de Janeiro Brasil, and we fish a big tuna more than 180 pounds, what kid of penn i need to buy? And i ask Lever drag reels can i casting 30, 40 or 50 meters, without backflash? Or i need to buy the reel like Avet MC lever drag with magnetic? Thanks
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge Жыл бұрын
You can cast a lever drag for sure. It doesn't go as far as a spinning reel but it will go 50 meters plus no problem with some practice. The PENN Fathom 30 or 40N woudl be my choice paired with a 60-100# rod that is 8' long. Check out the PENN West Coast series rod. They have a few options in this range. Good luck!

Hi! I wanted to ask why are conventional reels preferred so heavily to spinning setups in California? Is it for casting heavy irons? Love your stuff thanks!
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! I think it's more of a tradition thing. If you grew up on the West Coast, your dad, uncle and buddies all fished conventional gear so you do to. Also, spinning technology has come a long way in the recent years. Prior to this new breed of gear, you didn't want to hook a bigger tuna on spin gear.

We like the 40N for fish up to about 130#. It will catch bigger fish but over that we switch to Fathom/Torque 60's. More line capacity really helps.

I just bought a Penn Fathom 2 25nsd and the guy at the tackle shop swears the rod rating you use for that second setup is way to large of a rod for that reel. I understand that people have different opinions but it can be frustrating when I’m about to make a purchase and there are drastically conflicting thoughts on pairing which rod size with which reel size. Ugh.
