Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

Thanks for the great video. For a 7' medium rod to fill that 2nd setup "if you only have one" setup, would you go with the Penn 25N mated to Carnage 2 Med/Light 20-50lb rating or the Carnage 2 Med. 30-80lb rating? Great video, but I'm trying to get into bait caster reels for the maximum line capacity they have, and I'm not sure if this is the place I need to be. I use a 12 ft pole. Are these reels good for casting offshore? I need to bomb the line out far, and from what I've learned, a trolling reel is different from a bait caster? I've always used a spin reel but the line capacity does not compete with these types of reels. I'm fishing for White Sturgeon offshore, off the Columbia river in Washington. Looking for any tips that can lead me to my first official bait caster reel. Any suggestions help, and are appreciated.

We call these a conventional reel. They do cast far for sure, especially with a rod that long. If you aren't used to casting a conventional reel, you'll need to practice to get the hang of it. Best of luck.

Hi! I wanted to ask why are conventional reels preferred so heavily to spinning setups in California? Is it for casting heavy irons? Love your stuff thanks!
@LocalKnowledge4 жыл бұрын
Good question! I think it's more of a tradition thing. If you grew up on the West Coast, your dad, uncle and buddies all fished conventional gear so you do to. Also, spinning technology has come a long way in the recent years. Prior to this new breed of gear, you didn't want to hook a bigger tuna on spin gear.
@spoonclink58224 жыл бұрын
Conventional reels are more durable, and can be serviced from home much easier. Fly lined live bait is much better presented with a star drag conventional reels

I have fathom 25nld2 I plan to get a reel to match scti 80 to 130 rod. I’ve been looking at the fathom 40nld2 to pare it with the rod. The setup will be used to target 1.5 day trips and hopefully fish 80 to 170 ish pounds do you think that the 40 would be a good choice.
@LocalKnowledge Жыл бұрын
We like the 40N for fish up to about 130#. It will catch bigger fish but over that we switch to Fathom/Torque 60's. More line capacity really helps.

would a Penn Fathom 30LD2 is ok option to 40NLD2 as 3rd heavy rig / set up for San Diego’s Full Day or 3/4 Day trip? as the 40nld2 is somewhat heavy and better for for overnight to multi dayer...
@LocalKnowledge5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 30 would be fine as well. We like the 40 because it's narrow, holds more line and has better cranking power.

Can you cast that 40 narrow if you need to? Say a surface iron? Like more than pitching baits n stuff out there..just trying to really buy one set up. Also realizing I would love a two speed but just rarely get out searching for big tunas, unfortunately. Great content. So sick!

For general-purpose surface iron use, the brand new Fathom II star drags will be an excellent choice; either the 25N size or the 30 size.

I just bought a Penn Fathom 2 25nsd and the guy at the tackle shop swears the rod rating you use for that second setup is way to large of a rod for that reel. I understand that people have different opinions but it can be frustrating when I’m about to make a purchase and there are drastically conflicting thoughts on pairing which rod size with which reel size. Ugh.
@LocalKnowledge2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that and we understand. Shops and employees will always have their own take on the right way to do things. This is what we use and we know it works. These rods are a little underrated so we go up one weight to get the action we want.

Yes. PENN has been a great partner of the show and we fish their gear exclusively. That said, there are tons of great tackle options out there. Swap your favorite brand and the info above still applies. We love PENN but fish what you got or what you like and have fun.

I like the Daiwa Saltist 30 better than the Penn fathom 15. I have caught anything from calico bass to 20-25 lb tuna with it. Shimano Torium 30 rather than the Penn Fathom 25. Rather than the 40, I'd go with an Avet MXL Raptor... but I'm not sponsored by PENN. lol

really depends on where and what you're fishing for. For Socal the PENN Carnage rods are hard to beat in terms of value. I'd go with a 7' stick in the 60-80# class. BEst of luck.

That's a lot of jobs for one rod, but a 25N PENN Fathom is the reel you want. It will do all the above. You really need more than one set up to target that wide range of fish but the 25n with a carnager 7'6" 30-80# rod would to a good all around job. Good luck.
