Hey everyone, We have had a lot of comments asking what spare parts we bring on board when we travel remote. There are other spares we carry in another smaller container, which has a full set of wheel nuts, random nuts/bolts, split pins & hose clamps. Unfortunately, this wasn't in this video. Engine oil & ATF fluid is something we also carry. Hope you guys enjoy the video. 👍

Would you recommend carrying a 3/8” or a 1/2” socket set for work on a Toyota hilux n80.
@LapsofMaps16 күн бұрын
@@fwd9609 We would recommend a 3/8" socket set & a few 1/2" sockets with a 1/2" breaker bar such as 24mm for diff plug, 21mm impact for wheel socket, we carry 22mm for our aftermarket leaf springs & 35mm impact socket for CV shaft.

For sealing brake line blow outs - hardboard underlay nails or a copper nail - slide up the union to the broken pipe blead - you've still got one brake on that circuit

Agree with the spare key, usually stash it somewhere protected but fairly difficult to get to for security. I also think, after losing a starter motor in Cape York last year while remote, it is also a must for manuals. Two hours of pushing a heavy vehicle on soft terrain to get it started I would have happily swapped it out rather than do that again 😖

We carry 2 ignition keys with a spare battery . Also if running aftermarket wheels make sure the wheel nuts work with your spare eg tapered seat vs parallel nut for mags .

Enjoyed your video, some well thought out reasons for the spares. You must think about all your likely show stoppers, touring the outback and prepare accordingly. I haul a caravan, which is another can of worms. Love your videos, Isabelle, as small as she is, is amazing, lucky man Jeremy. Never heard of Mt Dare before your videos, but am now considering a visit next year. What about a video on the tools you carry?

Between your mechanical experience and trip leadership, I'd be very surprised if many people had more experience. I'd trust your recommendations 100%. People can then decide what they need to take based on their car and their trip.

I travel on 2 wheels, no doubt you see your fair share of broken bikes. Tools, tube, patches, oil, fork seals, zip ties, tape, heat shrink, lighter, small multimeter, spare bolts, extra tie downs, a bit of grease, glue, PLB and 2 way. The CRF now has 40000kms on it, so a clutch if I don't change it out beforehand (for sand I would change before I left) compressor and a spare key. Always a new or close to new chain and sprockets before a trip. Big sense of humour also, something always goes wrong.
@MrOlgrumpy14 күн бұрын
Replace the tubes of gasket sealer about 2 years as it does harden even if sealed. Carry an assortment of tyre patches and goo,tip top is the one I have. Spare key attached somewhere on the vehicle coated with silicon sealer for protection. I wouldn't run engine oil in the diff unless it was dry, and only under light load for minimum distance,it has no EP component,ok for bearings but not not gears.

Car specific tools, e.g. hub nut spanner, breaker bar to loosen belt tensioner, multimeter to fault find electrical issues, Colby emergency tire valve. Knowledge how to use the tools/spare parts, try a home in a relax / easy going manner. Spares for you and your knowledge / life great, for other people maybe to much. Great content !

I got different wheels on my car than the spare. So carrying a spare set of wheel nuts specific to the spare wheel is a must for me. Also I have got a hydraulic jack which came with the car and if I get a flat I can't be sure I will get it underneath the vehicle so I am thinking of getting a scissor jack just in case! I know I could carry a high lift jack but if weight is a concern it would be one of the first things I would consider getting rid of to lose weight!

Great video. Depending on how remote I am going I take most of those spares except the starter motor. As I have a Land Rover I also carry a diagnostic tool specific for the vehicle and a bunch of sensors for wheel speed, suspension height and some engine sensors as well. I also carry a few of the larger suspension bolts. Basically whenever I learn of a failure of some sort I try and add that component to my spares box. I tow an offroad trailer when very remote otherwise I would be maxed out on weight. Without the trailer I ditch things like the alternator, front hub and a few of the heavier items and carry fewer tools. I also have spare wheel nuts and studs. Glad to learn that I am not the only one carrying around a bunch of spares that hopefully are never needed.

I have an auto but rather than carry a spare starter I pull it out, inspect and usually clean solenoid terminals before a remote trip to save the weight, if in doubt put a new one in pre trip. I have a 2009 120 Prado, so similar to your hilux, I always carry a spare front shock, I only have the standard Old Man Emus not the BP51’s which look beefier. I carry welding rods and a welding lens, these saved another traveller a Simpson recovery when I stopped to help. They also saved us a recovery towards the end of one of our more extreme trips which was basically, Oodnadatta track, Finke track, Tanami, Canning, Gunbarrel hwy, McPhersons pillar on the Gary hwy, Connie Sue, across the trans continental where we did a trailer wheel bearing that cracked the hub. A scan gauge or similar to reset fault codes and list of what the codes are is also in our kit. Assorted bolts, nuts, tech screws also. A few years ago we had the nut on the upper control arm bolt come off and the bolt worked its way out, I have since drilled through the end of the bolt and added a split pin to avoid this ever happening again.

How do you weld without a machine - honest question ?
@ajs4x48215 күн бұрын
@ hook 3 batteries together to give 36 volts, use a set of jumper leads for welding cables, positive goes to earth and negative takes the electrode so DCEN (direct current electrode negative) welding. It’s crude and amperage control is difficult to impossible but it works well enough, particularly on thicker metal as you will have way more amps than ideal. You will need at least basic welding skills to be able to weld this way. Google and KZbin should provide a more thorough explanation and demonstration than I can give here.

Other things - wheel studs and nuts, power steering fluid (ATF) as I've needed to use it for other people's vehicles, one F&R shock, Rear leaf fixed pin (seen them break), And Haynes do make 79series V8 workshop manuals - its combined manual with 200series. All manuals (car, workshop, all accessories, electricals, fitments etc) I carry as PDFs on my phone - all the info and weighs absolutely nothing!

Pluck a duck…….just finished 2.5 years traveling AUS and I guess with all carry a different array of spares. I did not consider alternator or starter motor, although we have a manual gearbox. Did carried a couple of vehicle specific items. We were right a space and GVM which by default limited what we choose to carry. Didn’t end up needing any of the spares I carried…service items we had mailed to where we were going to need them.

I tend to agree with you. Having said that, I have a 2012 Chevy Silverado 3500 4x4 and do carry many of the items listed....might have to get a starter motor too. Truck weighs almost 5 tonnes and Bushtracker is around 3500kg. Every time I get home from the annual trek across the country to WA, I unpack all these parts....never needed any of them. It's now done 305,000klm and still haven't worn out a set of brake pads (gotta love exhaust brake). I do carry something nobody else has mentioned.....a valve stem replacement kit. I can install a new valve stem without needing to break a bead. Obviously I carry tyre plugs/tools and spare valves.
