The category’s called “Record of the Year,” which means what’s awarded is the quality of production, technical proficiency and sometimes the impact it has had on its listeners, and not chart performance. That’s why they have the names of [the] producer[s] and the engineers read out loud upon the announcement of the winner’s name. “Fancy” stood nowhere near “Stay With Me” or “Chandelier,” in my opinion.

Thank you Angela. Just happened on this site, couldn't believe the guy Davidib. Sam Smith has written a subtle song, melodic, hypnotic. If you listen to classical music, the great symphonies have a basic simple musical motif. Sam's delivery pure and superb. The simplicity is more complex to achieve than people realise. Further, he expresses emotions people don't have words for. If people like Davidib don't like this type of music don't come on this site. The Grammys recognise mainstream work; of course. Go elsewhere if you don't agree with the awards.
