It looks a lot different now to when I filmed this build... All my older videos were shot with a Canon EOS 7D and a range of lenses. Being limited to 1080p, and noise levels were pretty bad with video... still have a few old videos I haven't edited because the quality just makes me sad! Now filming with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, and a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, and a speedbooster (allows EF lenses on the MFT mount on the camera) and that pushes that up to f/1.3 which is pretty awesome. Cropped sensor effectively makes it 24-50mm which is great for pretty much all the filming I do. Mostly just have the camera on a tripod and move it around a fair bit (sometimes mount a gimbal on it so I can automate some camera movement)... and some shots are with the gimbal (DJI RONIN-S) for smooth fly-over shots. Use a range of different lighting setups from natural light, to LED panel lights, smaller LED lights, or a mixture of all. Sometimes have an exteranal 7" LCD screen facing me so I know that what I'm doing isn't being covered up by hands, or isn't out of focus... but usually get by without it. Doing everything in Davinci Resolve now and working with RAW footage gives me so much control over the end look of it!

There's a record player sitting under the tree for me, my gf thinks i dont know what it is. I've got a 4 foot space to work with and plan on building a record stand w storage. There are so many great designs to take inspiration from and its hard to pick which features i want. Im leaning towards using 2x4s for the whole project and staying away from plywood. I thought I'd use tall metal legs to give it height but i think ill just add another layer of vinyl storage to give it the same height. You've got a few extra major & minor tools I'd like to get first but I think i can finish it with what i have except i need larger clamps.

Great project - you've inspired me to build something similar! What finish do you apply to the exposed plywood edges?
@KastnerFurniture3 жыл бұрын
The finish on the unpainted faces and the edges was done using hardwax oil. You could apply edge banding to cover them with wood grain, but I quite like how the plywood layers looked in this project.

Not sure exactly. I would guess maybe 60 per box, times 8 boxes... maybe around 500 all up?? Maybe a little more or less depending. I've got maybe 150 in there currently and it still looks empty 😕

Those vertical dividers had to be time consuming. All the cheap Ikeas stuff I've assembled use dowel pegs that fit in holes in the horizontal pieces. But all that stuff is drilled and cut using CNC machines. It would have requited a ton of drilling.
@KastnerFurniture2 жыл бұрын
Actually made another record cabinet early last year and ended up using dowels to join those there, was much easier (video for that one is on my channel). I made another one recently and used dominos for that which was the best solution of the three... video coming soon for that one!

@KastnerFurniture3 жыл бұрын

I like how you built this. How many records did you measure to fit per selves and altogether. I’m thinking about building a vinyl record self myself but still undecided on how to build it, I have over 200 vinyl’s
@KastnerFurniture3 жыл бұрын
Not too sure exactly - I would say each box would fit at least 70-80 records, and there are 8 of them. I've just build a standalone piece which has 4 boxes instead of 8 which would hold 300 records with no issues... will have that video uploaded in the coming weeks so you may want to subscribe so you can get notified of when that one is up ;)
@nelsonleiva55464 жыл бұрын
quick question, what are the dimensions? i plan on building something similar, also where did you get that Japanese tool?
@KastnerFurniture4 жыл бұрын
From memory the boxes were 350x350mm internally, the whole thing was 390mm deep, the top shelf was 150mm high (but really if you have an amp in there that isn't slimline you'd want it to be a fair bit taller to allow prevent overheating). Overall dimensions then would have been 472mm x 916mm x 350mm (but that would depend a bit on the thickness of the ply you used I guess!)
@KastnerFurniture4 жыл бұрын
Oh and the Japanese plane, I'm sure you can find them online or at a decent woodworking store.

What model is your amp and speakers? Turntable?

Speakers are KEF Q350s, amp is a Rotel RA-05 (bit of an older model but still great), and the turntable is a Pro-Ject Essential

Awesome build! What was the height of your gap at the top? I am looking to build something similar and have that same compartment to hold my stereo. PS big Vulfpeck fan
@KastnerFurniture4 жыл бұрын
It was only 150mm gap... when I built it I didn't really know much about amplifiers. It wasn't til I finished it that I realised you need a lot of space around it. Ended up finding a second hand rotel for a real good price and it's only 70mm high so kinda perfect for the space! Vulfpeck are the best!

how much did it cost you all together?

Really hard to say... the veneer plywood isn't cheap - probably around $400 Australian dollars for the materials, but for this I used 4 different types of plywood so would have cost a lot more if this was all I was building.

Question. At 10:45 of the video, I get that you are able to secure the lower shelf panel walls from the top and bottom and that you can screws from the top side for the upper panel walls, but what did you do to the secure the bottom side of the upper panel walls as the bottom was already secured? Perhaps I missed it. I plan to build an in wall shelf and was thinking I'd either have route slots for the panels or stagger the panels to be able to secure them from top and bottom.
@KastnerFurniture4 жыл бұрын
If you look around 9:54 you'll see I'm attaching each panel with a single screw at the top and bottom (aligned) and that allows me to pivot it out of the way. It was a real mind-bending puzzle... those pivot screws were offset a bit at each level. This let me get at least 3 screws in critically, and I later put an angled one through back for that's panels on that middle shelf.
@KastnerFurniture4 жыл бұрын
I would have routed slots instead but the shelves were only 12mm thick so would have had up have been pretty shallow
@sapientapprentice46763 жыл бұрын
@@KastnerFurniture Sorry to poke an old thread but I'm ashamed to say I still don't get it... Pivoting an upright away gives you access to screw in the one below, but when you pivot it back it's directly over the one underneath and you can't then screw that one in from below. I just can't figure it out and I'm afraid my sleep will suffer!
@KastnerFurniture3 жыл бұрын
@@sapientapprentice4676 you need to offset the pivot points... enough so that you can fit the drill in. It was a mind bending puzzle. Next time I'd probably use dowels, dados, or make them with half-laps.
@KastnerFurniture3 жыл бұрын
@@sapientapprentice4676 Oh also, just to clarify - I didn't screw the bottom of the top verticals in other than where the pivot point was. You'll see a bit later in the video (11:45) I ended up rectifying this by putting an angled screw up in through the bottom (from the back of the unit). There wasn't much movement but enough to cause a bit of concern...
