Sterling Audio ST 155. Shockmount is built like a tank, switchable attenuation pad and high pass filter on mic. Awesome for vocals and super impressed when used for metal guitar. Under $200 at G.C. stores. Plus a case and extra shockmount rings.

I'm impressed by the LCT 240 pro mic. It's truly remarkable how affordable and high-quality microphones are these days. The cheapest mic I have is the t.bone RB 500 Ribbon mic with a price tag of 98€. I love this mic because of the typical ribbon sound and the price of course. I always use two of these on acoustic guitar in an MS configuration.

most impressed with the AT2035. For a slight price increase over the 2020 you get a highpass rolloff. Ive used it on voice, percussion, room, melodic percussion like marimba/vibe its very versatile for the price. All of my ensembles I work with have stereo pairs on each marimba. They are tried and true.

My favourite affordable condenser is the Studio Projects B3. You can change the polar pattern, it’s got a pad and high pass and all the fancy stuff. It’s not my first choice for acoustic guitars, but it sounds pretty good on vocals and even snare! I’ve used it in M/S configuration with an NT1 for acoustic before as well and that also sounds pretty good, especially if you do the opposite of what everyone tells you (instead of trying to get the capsules as close together as you can, give it some space. Maybe even offset it. There are no rules.)

I am most impressed with another $149 mic, the Slate ML-2. Great sounding mic on its own for the price, but with this modeling technology takes it to another level and makes it extremely versatile!

Just a drummer that plays around with some home and live recording of my and my friends bands...Lucky enough to have a variety of different albeit relatively inexpensive mics....I truly believe everything has it's place....sometimes the MXL 990 is nice....I like the Sterling ST55 but you really have to crank the gain. I also have a Bluebird SL which is super warm and great on classic rock guitar and vocals. I will say that from this video...I'd really like to check out the 240....I have a friend that needs to do some stuff exactly the way you did here and I think it would be great.

My latest, and affordable...only just!.. acquisition is a Rode NTK Tube Condenser Microphone. I had the NT1 ...the original one and continue to be impressed with it, but wanted a tube condenser. I found this mic to be really sizzly and harsh on top, personally. I used to have a pair of Shure SM-94s... Small diaphragm condensers. I don't think they're made anymore. I paid something like $180 each for them. Those two plus an SM-58 were the only mics I had for quite a while, and they worked out fine -- a lot of recordings made with those and my Mackie 1402! Then I got a pair of AT 4033s, which really upped the game! Watch Sennheiser's Facebook and/or web pages. For some anniversary of theirs, they are heavily discounting a couple mics each month. Mics not ordinarily cheap may be so!

I own a 640 lct TS myself but the 440 pure has blown me away... almost the same quality and sound, just without the bells and whistles, also not to forget the DCT 550 usb mic, also with dual option (but those come around 500$ I believe). I have to say I had a hard time noticing much difference between the 240 pro and the 440 pure, but that might just be my untrained ear... it does indeed sound fantastic! and I'm doubting not to buy it myself (or hopefully win it) to put it against my 640 ts and see how it fairs on vocals (that's my main occupation). I think the "cheapest" mic I have is the one that came with the scarlett studio pack (second gen), with headphones and a small diafram condencer mic, that package, including the interface was around 200$, incredible! I even recorded vocals for pro bands with it and nobody noticed anything wrong with the quality!
@nivenvojkovic92016 жыл бұрын
My favourite cheap mic for recording is the Sennheiser e840. I think it’s discontinued now and superseded by the e845. It’s a dynamic vocal mic, but one day, I used two of them in an x-y configuration, as overheads, on a Gretch kit and wow! I didn’t need any more mics. Flat Eq, through an old O2R for my pre amp, and a touch of compression through a plug-in, on the way in, and it sounds great. Later, I did add other mics, but my the point I’d like to make is how good they sound on their own. So I tried it on a bass cab and guitar cab, and they produced a lot of warmth. Chuck a pop filter in front and it does male and female vocals nicely as well. Oh, head and bell of a Djembe, great sound. Love the channel, cheers from 🇦🇺

Pulled the trigger on this mic as my 1st. I´ll be recording fingerstyle guitar and really hope it serves me well ... i was thinking between Rode M5 - LCT 240 - LCT 040, i'm not an expert at all but they sounded great and at a unbelievable price range, i went for the LCT 240 because it will be easier to use since im recording my own stuff. The stereo recording is a compelling idea but maybe a little to much for someone like me as a beginner and since my recording room and experience is not the best would introduce me to a lot of difficulties and problems aswell. Got to say that your videos on this mic were instrumental to make the choice, and will be very useful to mix so I´d like to thank you for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge worldwide helping people with their passions.

A really good sounding microphone, and very versatile, as demonstrated here! Thank you Warren for providing an informative and enjoyable performance, and thanks to Lewitt for providing one for a lucky musician. The single distance mic, singer with guitar reminds me that distance provides air, and air is a good "compressor", taming spiky transients and blending harmonics in a pleasing way. I got a "coffee house" feel from the vibe. Drums, guitars, and vocal came through cleanly, ready to mix and enhance as desired. The mic seems well built and comes with everything needed to mic any situation. I have used an AT4040 ($299) and would love to compare that with this mic. Thanks again!

Great job, as always, Warren! I've accumulated several low price mics over the years, and have found three that I seem to gravitate toward: MXL V67 LDC with an output transformer which works well on some vocals, standard SM57 on most amps, and my latest and probably my new go-to mic: Blue Bluebird. It has a warm, yet neutral sound that I find useful for vocals, and even acoustic guitar. Off topic, but a quick question: Have you considered doing a video on documentation of sessions and the equipment and settings used? So often, it seems as though the pros can recall such a level of detail about past sessions, even decades ago, that it amazes me.
@Roadking264 жыл бұрын

Yep. That's pretty darn nice! I have a pair of Blue Sparks I would say are closest to the value/sound. Plus they have a "focus" switch that, while I don't employ it often, gives you a secondary tonal option, which can be nice. Still, best bang-for-buck mic for me right now is the $299 WA-47jr. Just a ridiculously good value with lots of options. Definitely colors the sound a bit, but in a good way and I've now used it on darned most everything!

Warren Huart: mixing class hero The only condenser mics I own are three from Sterling: the ST51, SP150, and SP130(SDC). The latter two came packaged together. I got them all really cheap on sale. I wouldn't say that I'm impressed with them, per se, but they certainly do the job, especially considering the price. My bandmate owns a matched pair of Audio-Technica AT2020s, which also seem to do a good job. We initially just used them as room mics to record our jam sessions before we starting learning how to produce like a pro. Now, we like to use them as amp mics in combination with a faux 57 or two. I wish you hadn't cut "Crossroads" short. I whipped out my D harmonica and started jamming along with you. I was just getting into it, too.

I think it would be very useful to present comparative tests. For example, this against an expensive Neumann 47, or this against cheaper Shure 57, so I can really tell what Im missing out on by not owning this mic. That was fun, wasn't it? Ok, my favorite mic I own is the Rode NT1. I have two other mics that cost a little over 100 EUR combined. I use them for recording kids and they get thrown around a lot.

What a mic, wow! Impressed! Also great acoustic guitar sound! With my Rode NT1-a I can't get this sound, but I think it's mainly because of the room ambience (it's not treated). I don't like the "reverb" that it adds. Since I'm at a point of moving to another house, I'll definitely treat my home studio and also put a couch in it (this one is too small for that)

are they automatically matched like the 440s so you could get a stereo pair
@JimijaymesProductions4 жыл бұрын
Would you consider the 440 a big improvement for the money? It seems this has a little of that china mic hype in the top end.

Loved the quick rundown, Warrren. Nice mic for the price! How much of Crossroads did you record? I'd love to try throwing a vocal on it!
@Producelikeapro6 жыл бұрын
Hi Graeme Woller I only did the one verse and the guitar solo! Maybe we can do a version in the Academy?
@GraemeWoller6 жыл бұрын
@@Producelikeapro I'll have to admit... It's pretty important to have the guitar solo..!!

What do you think about the at2035 compared to this microphone?
@robcotter30723 ай бұрын
Hi, I just purchased the ltc , when you recorded crossroads, did you just use the ltc overhead? The mic on the snare is that on? Cheers!

I'd like to know how much gain is needed for that kind of microphone? Gain on the interface I mean..

Might be my next purchase, but 1 question, have you done anything to your squire vi? Because I've recently got one and trying to find easy mods to stabilise it and was curious what you have done to yours?

How good is this mic when it comes to room noise cancellation keep in mind, one do not have an acoustic treatment.
