I respect that you know when to stop. That's maybe one of the most difficult things to master and the main reason I struggle to finish my songs.

@@SleepingOrchard duude the self-doubt is a killer. I'm learning to just be okay with sucking though if that's what it takes to finish songs and put them out there. Cause what's the point with spending my life making music if im gonna doubt it at the finish line and not share it lol

@@macaroon147 that’s a great way to look at it! Also knowing things like even Jimi Hendrix didn’t like his own voice etc, helps. I think knowing your limitations is good too. I know my vocal range is like 5 notes 😂 so I stick to those 5 and try to make it work.

I dig it. You basically bought all the crap we were recording demos with in my teens, that was expensive back then, and we just had a 4 track.. You bought it for a deal, and made it work for you. Good for you man.. Back to basic. Authentic. Gives me hope for the future of music. AI and Software cannot compete with a real human soul.

😂 Yes that’s pretty much what I did. I can’t believe how cheap I got this tape machine, though they’ve gone up a LOT since then. I’m glad it can give you hope, and part of it is an active resistance to AI. I figured it’ll take longer for AI to replicate sloppy human home recordings 😂 (it may still get there one day though 😳)

I use old guitar pedals, open reel loops, diy analogue drone synths, old spoken word vinyl etc to build ambient soundscapes. Love the hands on feel. I've been getting rid of a lot of gear, love using a stripped down set up. It's very freeing.

@@SleepingOrchard Happy enough! I had to pull it up to refresh my memory. I'd been wanting to put together a retro tech KZbin channel forever and I wanted to create a background music loop I could chop up and put behind certain sequences. It's just a two chord loop that I improvise and expand on for 5 minutes. I've still never made the channel, but when my friend asked me if I had anything he could use as hold music for business, that's what he's currently using. It does sound like hold music. 😅

One more fun tidbit is that since I didn't have any outboard FX, I decided to record it into the computer for FX and light editing, and then I recorded it (still multitrack) back to tape to give it even more saturation. I can't remember if I did the stereo mix on the unit itself or if I recorded the tracks back into the computer to mix and bounce but if I did it was just to set the levels and I tried not to touch much else.

Thanks! Yes I’ve noticed that it’s much easier to get a nicer sound on the tape because it rounds of the harshness nicely at the top. I can make digital sound similar-ish but it takes soooo much more work and a ton of plugins

It’s not as relaxing is it? I think it COULD be if you have mixing consoles and outboard physical gear etc, but clicking a mouse for ages relaxes precisely 0 people. Very nice! A couple of bits of gear that you might consider would be a DI box, so you can have wet and dry vocals to mix, and a Zoom MS-70 CDR guitar pedal for adding unique sound effects. Every great recording always starts with a great song. It's the same with photographs. Subject matter is the most important thing and you've got a great guitar refrain going and a melody line that just oozes Americana. You've got a very good example of a 688 there. I've had a few in my time and they've always been a bit beat up. Good luck with the song.

I'm subscribing because this sounds absolutely lovely! I'd probably have done a sparsely pinged set of chimes periodically through the song, going through that Copicat as well, just for the vibes.🥰
@SleepingOrchard
@SleepingOrchard 5 ай бұрын
Ahh yes chimes would have worked! I even thought about it at one point but the ones we have are in a different key to the song. I should write a song to the key of the chimes next time lol

Hey, very nice stuff. Do yo use any compression when you record or mix your stuff in cassette?
@SleepingOrchard
@SleepingOrchard 3 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks! I sometimes do but not on this one. I find that if you push the level hard enough into the tape, it compresses it for you. I would like to get a proper compressor though to record through before it goes to the tape machine 🤞🏻

At 6:41 is that an artifact of the tape echo from the guitar or did you play that in?
@SleepingOrchard
@SleepingOrchard 4 ай бұрын
Oooh I’m not sure, I can’t hear it on my phone. I’d imagine so, there’s a slight loose connection somewhere in the tape echo that can sometimes make odd sounds and pops. I will listen again on headphones and see if I can identify.
