To all those who've just bought one, are thinking of buying one, or have had one for a while, the simplest thing to do to stop the issue with the damped tonearm descent, is to leave the cue lever in the 'UP' position - even if you've clamped the arm in it's holder; it's not putting any pressure on the cue platform as it's lower than the arm in it's 'rest' position.... I guess this keeps pressure in the damping piston (whatever), and after about 3 years, I've never had a problem with it "dropping like a rock". 👍 I've always followed that practice over the past 40+ years of turntable use and never had a problem with the cue mechanism failing, or, accidentally knocking the arm & cartridge stylus-down onto the platter mat, which would be VERY annoying, and expensive!! 😠

Vinyl talk with Tavis also has some very nice videos about looking back on his time with the 120XUSB. However, he had issues with a quickly dropping tonearm lift just like you had at 13:26, but he managed to fix it easily by adding damping fluid (he made a how-to video on it). About the anti-skating: on the new 120XUSB it's working as it should, because it has been updated. The early LP120 turntables had anti-skating that didn't work appropriately, but it had tonearm height adjustment (has been removed completely). Back then, users had to fix the anti-skating by setting the spring in a different position while holding the knob at 0. Just two tips: The platter has zero damping; a nice and easy way to solve that is by using rubber spray on the back to cover it with rubber. Reduces vibrations quite decently (not as good as a real slab of rubber glued to it of course). Don't forget to tape off the center hole so the spray doesn't get in there. If you have feedback through the aluminium tonearm tube, you can put some rubber rings around the tonearm tube to dampen it.

Thanks for the review. I finally upgraded from the LP60 to this because my LP60 had the notorious speed accuracy issue and it was driving me nuts, and I got tired of turning the thing over and looking for the tiny little screws to try to fix it. I opted for the LP120XUSB because my experience with the LP60 convinced me that I had to have pitch adjustment. But as you say, the 120 was rock-solid from the get-go.

Back in 2018, I purchased two of these units. Overall they were good units. However, this model has a hydraulic cuing issue. Overtime, the gel used wears thin, and when using the cue lever, it drops the needle onto the record. Now with that said, there is a fix. You can purchase the gel, and apply it to the piston. You can either apply it from up above, or take the bottom off, and provide professionally application. The metal weighs you spoke of, it is an actual steel plate. I ended up selling both units, and upgraded to two AT-LP-1240USB XP Edition. Rock solid. To this very day I use the cuing lever, and it has never failed. Very true about how vulnerable the dust cover is to scratches. Rule of thumb, don’t place anything on it. I have found by using “clear coat” polishing compound to remove fine scratches and brings back that luster. In addition, I also apply Sun Of Gun protectant that repels the dust. I also do not use a cotton cloth and definitely do not use a Micro Fiber cloth. I use the cloth that comes with a screen protector for your phone. Works like a charm. Both of my dust covers are I top condition.

I've had the black one for about 10 months, and I love it! It's a fantastic turntable. The only thing I've noticed is a very soft noise after pressing the start button, I think it might be a spring getting back into place. Nothing major and I'm definitely keeping this TT for years to come. It sounds great! By the way, from the very beginning, I've protected it with a home made soft cloth cover when not in use, to prevent our cat from directly walking on the dust cover. It has remained scratch free until now.

You’re right, all these companies Crosley, Audio Technica and Lenco (in Europe) sell this same type of turntable. It’s not a fancy unit, but having a Lenco L-3808 for more than a year, I can say that these relatively cheap turntables are amazing for the price and build quality. Mine is also a direct drive with correct speed at 33 and 45 rpm with no pitch correction and no motor noise whatsoever, giving me much better sound than the couple of vintage Onkyo’s I’ve grown with.

What is interesting about this design is that it's been around for 50 or more years. I have a 1968 Pioneer PL-740 with many similar characteristics. It was made in a Japanese plant back then and they produced a lot of turntables for a lot of companies. My TT is direct drive and is fully automatic. It has a straight tonearm that raises and lowers just like the 120X. Looks like same parts. I did change out the original cartridge as it was obsolete and put in a nice AT cartridge. These all seem to be great TTs for the beginner to pro who don't want to dump a long of cash on a TT, yet get great performance. Love my 120X.

I`m glad I finally found somebody that demonstrated this unit because I plan on purchasing an LP 120X USB to upgrade from my LP 120 usb. I know there`s an LP-140 out there but that`s out of my budget for now. The only issues I ever had with the LP 120 usb were the cue lever ( which I just added some dampening fluid once and has been fine since) and the anti skate ( which it failed the cd test but has always tracked fine for some reason). I`m keeping the lp120 usb to digitize records and I`m wanting to hook the LP 120X USB to my AV receiver. I`m not a DJ or an audio snob by any means but I do like good sounding audio at an affordable price and the locked in speed of a direct drive is a plus . Some may think Audio Technicas are inferior, but having grown up with BSR record changers and the constantly having to re adjust the pitch on a denon dp 300 f, this is a big step up for me.

The AT95VM cart is ok, but for 45s I've been using the venerable AT3600 with an upgraded LP Gear stylus, which gives a more centered and upfront soundstage. For high quality stereo lps, I switch to an Ortofon Blue. Additionally, I use a Hudson HiFi cork and rubber mat which I prefer a tad over the acrylic and rubber mats. Sometimes I like this turntable better then my high end device upstairs!

I own a great dac/headphone amp and a pair of £300 open back headphones, last night I played the highly regarded 2015 hi res remaster of the album ‘Forever Changes’ by Love. I then payed the equally highly regarded vinyl reissue of that album on the 120x. Aside from some low surface noise on quiet musical sections the level of detail was very close to the hi res transfer from the original master tapes that the hi res compatible dac/amp is processing. This is from the TT stock stylus and inbuilt pre-amp. As such I’ve ignored others telling me I’m ‘wrong’.

I've had two of these (had to return the first one) and it does have some quirks. There's an issue with platter wobble (dipping and rising), the strobe shows this clearly. You probably won't hear anything weird but it will drive you nuts visually. I also have to raise the speed a tiny bit on some 33's but that seemed to stop after a few weeks of break in time. These TT's do sound great though but overall, it is kind of a flimsy plastic unit. Feels cheap. Be sure to make all of the alignment adjustments and lower the cueing lever height. Before any mods, try different RCA interconnect cables (makes a huge difference) and keep the stock 1/8" felt mat. Sounds best with it.

@Jeffthrow6892: If the pressure goes out on the cueing lever, and the stylus just drops fast, this can often be fixed by putting the arm on the rest, and pumping the lever a few times, to rebuild pressure.... test it, and see if the arm drops slowly again.... if it does, then just leave the lever in the 'raised' position when you're not using the turntable, and it should retain pressure, and always have a damped descent for the stylus in future..... that's what I've always done with this, and almost every other turntable (as long as it's not putting pressure on the arm/clamp), and I've never had a cueing issue....I've now had this AT-LP120XUSB for about a year with no issues, and also with other turntables that I've had for years - where people have complained about cueing failures!! I sort of like a semi automatic myself. I would be torn on which to buy. You have to ask, are you just playing records while you work or doing some serious transcribing to digital. For the latter, this is a perfect choice. For me, I run into old turntables and keep them alive for now.

I realized that the line out has somewhat less output than when I go through a preamp (PRO JECT Phono Box BTE). It also gives a more intense and fat sound using the preamp. No noise via line though, a little bit via preamp, typical ground noise when turning up volume max. And classical LPs somehow sound better on my Debut III...

The earlier model (AT-LP120-USB) DOES have a motor rumble. I've had two of them and they both rumbled. Unmistakable and very noticeable. You can hear the turntable when it is running and that audible rumble is transferred to the playback.

To record=ology EXCELLENT !!!!!! explanation on why they put weight or metal plate in TT for the noise or rumble you might get my at-lp120 never heard motor noise or rumble so far never had an issue with preamp interference I read a lot of people complain it takes away the sound you want to hear but I never heard it cause the first thing I did or always have done is hook it up to an equalizer to counter act the equalization when recording engineers mix the record I am sure when ever you play different records they never sound the same some are too bassy and some too much treble it has always been an issue with me ,when young and I worked in a record store my boss use to tell me when new albums come out to buy them asap cause when the next batch of records come the pressing is not as good that why when I could buy a album if I waited too long you tell the sound was not that great , equalizers a lot of people don't know about them and they are hard to find but they can add brilliance to the sound ,when I listen to my records I have the EQ set so you can hear the singer more clearly ,a lot of new records that are made today are very bass heavy thats where an EQ comes in handy ,also on the record cover yes even if you glance at the dust cover I swear I can feel it getting scratched my old Onkyo TT is really scuffed ,but for my AT-LP120 and my C-10 I bought some covers that go over the plastic dust cover and both TT's look like when I first got them they are made by a co called DIGITAL covers they make them for each model of TT and not that expensive ,andI saw how the tone arm was going down too fast ,my AT-LP120 was worse ,they make a damping fluid is silicone based I will try to find it and let you know it is an easy fix it cured the damping problem I had , it works even better but thanks again for the video glad we have smart people getting into more detail about TT'S JRO

Great video. I will tell you this. I got my audio Technica record last year of November. About 3 weeks ago my start-and-stop button stopped working is spinning. Just got of the blue and I do not know why. Since I bought the record player from Sweetwater company. I have a two year warranty on it that comes with it when you bought it. So I sent it to Sweetwater's and they send it off to Audio-Technica company for them to fix it. The problem was was a faulty start and stop button extender. So they fix it and I am waiting for to come back any day now. Cannot wait to have it so I can play some of my new records that I got.

I had the same issue which I just noticed today. I bought this in March 2020 and only used it a handful of times. It has been turned off the rest of the time and today (11/11/2020) I went to try to use it and everything turns on but it won't spin. The start/stop button does not work anymore! What an awful quality for this record player.

I like the AT-LP120XUSB-BK, except for one thing… I want to record from the turntable in a higher 24 bit rate than the 16 bits that the USB offers by connecting to your computer. I heard the best way to do this is by running RCA cables through a Tascam DR-40X or DR-05X recorders, and then transferring to your computer. How does everyone feel about this? I heard this was particularly important if you plan to edit background noise in RX8 iZotope, Click Repair, or Audacity, or you’ll be more prone to creating weird noise in place of clicks, pops, and crackle. Maybe the computer should be saved for splitting tracks and editing noise?

Those scratches are caused by usually dust particles sitting on the cover. Just like you dropped the album on it dragging across all that dust and scratching plastic. Glass would withstand all that.

I first purchased an AT-LP 60 before that AT-LP 120 USB. I can't recommend the AT-LP 60 because it had a tracking problem. The forearm either hung or skipped on certain passages on records in good condition. Because of the turntables tonearm there was way to make adjustments that might have solved this problem. Newer models may have corrected this issue. I had my AT-LP 60 back in 2016 to 2017. I was eventually upgrade to the AT-LP 120 USB and I have had excellent performance and no issues with it for going on four years and plan to continue to use it because for me it's a very good turntable. A couple of years ago I installed a new Ortofon Omega 1E cartridge with an elliptical stylus. This is an excellent sounding cartridge its specs match most all cartridges of any brand. It's that good. As far as the dust cover is concerned, my still looks new with no scratches. I never put anything on mine (the paper on album covers can be pretty abrasive when drug on and off a dust cover. Even a wet paper towel use to clean it can leave fine scratches). So put nothing on it but put a soft microfiber towel to dust it every other day and it should be fine. These dust covers are extremely susceptible to scratching so act accordingly if you want to keep it looking new. As far as the AT-LP 120 USB is concerned, I certainly recommend this turntable for performance and reliability is concerned this turntable is a perfect starting point and stopping point for around $250.00 or less. Amazon sometimes offer good deals on these turntables where the box had some damage with no damage to the turntable. That's how I bought mine.

A turntable dust cover is just that…a dust cover. It’s not a record shelf or a speaker rack. I own a Denon DP-47f and I bought it new in the mid eighties. The dust cover on that turntable still looks like new. It all depends on how well you take care of your equipment.

@boromir_84283 жыл бұрын
the problem of noise and hum is often that you have to plug your turntable and your amplifier on the SAME electrical outlet. If they are on different ones, you will get a loud hum or ground type of noise that you hear when raising the volume before playing the record.

Thanks for all your great videos - have learned a lot. Still having damping issues with the tonearm drop; have tried the solution recommended; either I haven't used enough, or it doesn't seem to work. Two other questions - I have used an ART DJPREII Plus Phono Preamplifier; having trouble getting the gain correct with the audacity gain, and when listening on itunes after downloading it, the volume is low. Also, is there much difference using a direct line from the turntable AT-Lp120XUSB to the laptop for digitizing vinyl vs going through the preamp?
