This week’s guest is Fedi from All Rights Deserved. He is a vinyl collector and dealer from Berlin, who travels a lot for work. A translator job took him to Kinshasa last December, where he was able to dredge up some 200 45s spanning 3 decades of recordings from the Congo basin.
All records presented here are from the years after renaming the country to Zaïre in ’71. Mobutu’s state ideology “Autenticité” demanded that traditional values, names and music be adopted, which great a many abided by.
Nonetheless, the democratization of the sixties and the concomitant influx of foreign influence, leading all the way to the international super concert accompanying ’74s « Rumble in the Jungle «, had a massive impact on local artists. Especially in Kin it seems, the youth was ready for the next round, streamlining any international craze into their music: Soukous Soul, Son Cubano, Doo Wop, Folksoum, Griot Funk, Synth Candombe, Contemporary Rumba, Reggae Lingala…

That one is special. Jean Ilunga Kalama went into Belgian exile in 1982, the same year this record came out. He came back in 1997 as cultural adviser to president Laurent Desire Kabila, and when he was killed in 2001, Jean left for France where he died in 2017. He was the coordinator of the UCDP (Congolese Union for Homeland Defense) created in 2004, and in 2012 he founded the FCRP (Civil Front of Popular Resistance). Anyone with further info about Jean Kalama, please reach out. If you want the whole track, you can find it on my channel. Thanks for listening!

WHY? There is always a reason behind. When the black color was cursed by another mind, the GREATER mind determined that blacks would have access to VIBRATION & SOUND in order to alleviate the pain the curse would cause. It's been prophesied that the ultimate representation of the black man, a black man NOT FROM THIS WORLD mind, he will come back to Africa to reestablish order. Caos on earth, then Order.

Música é assim, eu conheço Chicha por aqui, me dá vontade de ir pro Peru. Ouvindo esse set, dá vontade de ter tido uma noção de como era o Zaire naquela época. Imaginar como a galera se reunia pra curtir esse ritmo. Bom demais, domingueira...
