Recover an Antique Sofa With Me | Madame Absinthe

I got a cheap (and STINKY) antique sofa at a flea market and thought I would try my hand at reupholstering it! Do I succeed? Or do I fail miserably and end up smelling like cat pee? Watch and find out!

Fun project! Note: upholster while in sweatpants 😆 You sell yourself short, as it turned out great!! I have a large blk club chair with silver tacks, so I love it! I notice you did not add new castors, but I won’t ask. 🤭 Edit: I do hope it’s not haunted with pee smell....

I was definitely worried about it being haunted with pee smell, but it seems to be okay, thankfully! As for castors, I looked everywhere, but it turns out modern castors SUCK. And I didn't want to put ugly modern utilitarian castors on such a beautiful old sofa. So I left them off. And yes, next time I will definitely be upholstering in something more comfy! I certainly won't do it in a corset again!

It's actually a giant outdoor market and I absolutely LOVE going there! It's probably over 150 independent vendors which just gather and sell the most random and awesome assortment of stuff in a giant field.

A pair of Klein, that I use for staple and nail pulling, or even needle nose pliers would have helped a lot.

There were different kind of corsets. The one you wear looks kinds extreme stiff, but there were working corsets with lighter boning to be able to bend a lot more and actually work. The really stiff ones were more evening appropriate or reserved for aristocrats, who didn't have to work at all.

I know. I was mostly just making a joke. . . But in all seriousness, it SUCKS to do physical work in a corset of any sort I'm sure! Next time I'll wear leggings and a comfy tank top! Too bad women of the past didn't have that option.

Reupholstering the pee pee bench was a definite success. It looks great!!! Nice addition to your home. Anything else you reupholster will be easier now that you know how it's done. I cheat----I use slipcovers. Most of the time they don't fit right and look like crap. (Jan Griffiths).

I absolutely love getting weird old broken things and fixing/altering them to make them mine! Why have the same boring new ikea dresser as everyone else, when you can probably get an older, more interesting (and better made) one for cheaper? Plus it's a great way to teach yourself new skills!

I get up REALLY early, that's how I find the time! I'm always insanely busy from morning till night, but that's how you get stuff done. If o have any spare time, it is a rare day indeed!

Honestly, this is how most of the things I own start out. I buy them secondhand and they never end up looking like they did when I bought them. I almost always severely alter/upcycle/fix all my clothing/furniture/jewelry. It's no fun go get something shiny and new that lots of other people have! It's much more fun to find something old, broken and unique and make it your own.

we all start somewhere. I was a goth designer now I do upholstery. wayy more $$$. :P also you need a side cutter they help pull staples out after the remover lifts em wink. lastly, we dont serge much but you do need a 2 inch over hang to pull it tight like you can bounce a quarter of a butt. lol

I actually prefer my things to look a bit "rough around the edges". I like my old things to LOOK old, if that makes sense. It kind of bugs me when things are too pristine and pretty, so I left the dented and scratched black paint alone. It's just my personal taste, I suppose

I know!! I actually have a big box of gloves that I *should* wear when I touch gross stuff, but I never do. I work with my hands so much and am so used to the way things feel/work without gloves, that I almost never wear them. I feel like a cat with bags on my feet when I wear them, like my hands don't function properly somehow and they drive me NUTS! Plus, I'm kind of at a weird stage in my life where I'm so used to touching gross things that it doesn't really phase me anymore; I always just wash up really well afterward and call it a day!
